Notes:
Studies have been undertaken to determine whether the insulin response to intravenous glucose in a group of 20 to 24 week pregnant, potentially diabetic, women might be useful in the detection of those whose babies will be large. The investigation confirmed that glucose tolerance alone is not a good discriminant. Measurement of the first phase of insulin release, when corrected for the increased insulin release associated with maternal obesity, is a better discriminant. Other factors, including maternal obesity, contribute to the production of a large baby.
