Notes: Abstract. A mistletoe lectin was isolated from water extracts of Korean mistletoe, a subspecies of Viscum album, grown on Quercus mongolica using CM-Sepharose chromatography followed by an affinity chromatography on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column. The compound proved to be a mistletoe lectin II with D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine specificity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectroscopy showed it to have an average molecular mass of 62.7 kDa and to consist of two subunits of 30.6 kDa and 32.5 kDa. It was a basic protein with isoelectric points of 9.4 and 9.6 by capillary isoelectric focusing and was cytotoxic to Molt4 cell.

Notes: Abstract. Background: Diffuse peritoneal tumor infiltration is well recognized on computed tomography (CT) and is usually associated with carcinomatosis. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the CT findings of peritoneal spread from primary gastrointestinal lymphomas. Methods: Abdominal CT scans in eight patients with peritoneal lymphomatosis were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were 12–75 years old (mean = 48 years); with six patients were male and two were female. Pathologic evidence of primary lymphoma was available by colonoscopic biopsy of the terminal ileum in seven cases and by gastroscopic biopsy of the stomach in one case. All patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We analyzed CT findings in view of presence or loculation of ascites, abnormal patterns of mesentery and omentum, presence of peritoneal enhancement, presence of low attenuation and location of lymph nodes, and primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. Results: Although ascites was present in all patients, there was no loculation. The involvement of mesentery was present in seven patients, and the stellate pattern was the common type (4/7). The involvement of omentum was present in seven patients, and the common type was omental cake (3/7). Peritoneal enhancement was present in six patients. Enlarged lymph nodes were present in six patients, mainly at the retroperitoneum and mesentery, and showed centrally low attenuation in half the patients. Conclusion: Patterns of tumor involvement of mesentery, omentum, and peritoneum seen in peritoneal lymphomatosis are indistinguishable from those seen in peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculous peritonitis. However, ascites without any loculation or septation and diffuse distribution of enlarged lymph nodes were helpful signs of peritoneal lymphomatosis.

Notes: Abstract. A 32-year-old Chinese man with cystic lymphangioma of the transverse colon is described. He presented with a 1-year history of altered bowel habits. Double-contrast barium enema study demonstrated a submucosal lesion in the midportion of the transverse colon with intact mucosa. Computed tomography (CT) showed a round 3.0-cm submucosal cystic mass lesion. Colonoscopy revealed a smooth, soft polypoid mass on a broad base. He underwent segmental resection of the colon. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by cystic lymphangioma originating from the submucosa. The clinical features, radiology, appropriate treatment, and possible pathogenesis of colonic lymphangioma are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A chitinase gene (chiA) from Pseudomonas sp. YHS-A2 was cloned into Escherichia coli using pUC19. The nucleotide sequence determination revealed a single open reading frame of chiA comprised of 1902 nucleotide base pairs and 633 deduced amino acids with a molecular weight of 67,452 Da. Amino acid sequence alignment showed that ChiA contains two putative chitin-binding domains and a single catalytic domain. Two proline-threonine repeat regions, which are linkers between catalytic and substrate-binding domains in some cellulases and xylanases, were also found. From E. coli, ChiA was purified 12.8-fold relative to the periplasmic fraction. The Michaelis constant and maximum initial velocity for p-nitrophenyl-N,N′-diacetylchitobiose were 1.06 mM and 44.4 μmol/h per mg protein, respectively. The purified ChiA binds not only to colloidal chitin but also to other substrates (avicel, chitosan, and xylan), but the binding affinity of avicel, chitosan, and xylan is around 10 times lower than that of colloidal chitin. The reaction of ChiA with colloidal chitin and chitooligosaccharides (trimer-hexamer) produced an end product of N,N′-diacetylchitobiose, indicating that ChiA is a chitobiosidase.

Notes: Summary Using a double blind, double dummy crossover design, single dose and steady state pharmacokinetics of oral controlled release (SCR) salbutamol 4 mg and 8 mg tablets b. d. has been studied in 8 Asian patients. Plasma salbutamol was measured over 12 h. In 8 patients the single dose mean Cmax was 4.2 ng·ml−1 and 7.7 ng·ml−1 after 4 and 8 mg, respectively. In 5 patients the steady state mean Cmax, Cmin and tmax were 8.1 ng·ml−1 and 4.7 ng·ml−1 and 6 h for the 4 mg tablets and 14.1 ng·ml−1 and 7.1 ng·ml−1 and 4 h for the 8 mg tablets. It is concluded that both doses of SCR show features of controlled release and that they produced a relatively constant plasma level of salbutamol in Asian patients.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of phenytoin was studied in 66 epileptic Chinese children and adults. The data were analysed by the population approach, using the non-linear mixed effect model, in the MULTI (ELS) program. There was no age or gender-related effect on either the apparent maximum elimination rate (kmax) or Michaelis-Menten constant (KM). Kmax was related to body weight 0.656. The population pharmacokinetics was similar in children and adults. Kmax and KM were estimated to be 30.72 mg·kg−0.656 day−1 and 2.307 mg·l−1, respectively. Kmax was higher than reported values, and KM was comparable to that reported in a study in Japanese, but was much lower than that reported in studies of European patients. The inter-individual variability of KM (CV 65.58%) was substantially higher than that of kmax (CV 28.49%), and the residual (intra-individual) variability was found 21.33% (CV).

Notes: Summary The 24 h urinary excretion of paracetamol and its conjugates after oral administration of about 15 mg/kg was studied in 24 Chinese and 24 Indian healthy young adult male volunteers living in Singapore. The Indians excreted a significantly lower fraction of sulphate conjugate (28.9% compared to 35.9% in the Chinese), and a correspondingly higher fraction as glucuronide conjugate (62.2% compared to 54.5% in the Chinese). There was no difference between the ethnic groups in terms of the urinary recovery of unchanged paracetamol (Indians 3.4%, Chinese 3.6%), glutathione-derived cysteine (Indians 2.3% and Chinese 2.2%) and mercapturic acid (Indians 3.6%, Chinese 3.8%) conjugates. The total fraction of administered paracetamol recovered in the urine was 84.7% and 85.7% in the Indian and the Chinese groups, respectively. Although the total glutathione derived conjugates recovered in the two ethnic groups were similar (Indians 5.9%, Chinese 6%), the values were lower than those reported previously for Caucasians in Scotland (9.3%).

Notes: Rate coefficients for the ion–ion recombination process Xe++F−+He→XeF*+He have been determined in ambient helium gas in the density range from 0.2 to 0.7 NL (Loschmidt's number NL=2.687×1019 cm−3). The experimental methods consisted of observing the conductivity decay during the afterglow of a photoionized plasma, in conjunction with mass spectrometry of plasma ions and optical spectroscopy of the XeF* excimer radiation. The measured rate coefficients agree well with theoretical results by Bates and Mendaš and Monte Carlo simulations by Morgan et al.
