    Notes: Abstract Four endosymbiotic diatoms were isolated from 2 species of larger foraminifera collected in the Red Sea and Hawaii. The photoadaptive responses of the cultured diatoms were measured at 312, 19 and 7 μW cm-2. Two of the diatoms (Fragilaria shiloi and Nitzschia laevis), both isolated from Amphistegina lessonii, grew fastest at 312 μW cm-2. The other two diatoms (N. valdestriata and N. panduriformis) which were isolated from Heterostegina depressa, grew best at 19 μW cm-2. Of the four diatoms, F. shiloi grew best at high light levels. Also in F. shiloi, chlorophyll c content per cell was directly proportional to light intensity; in contrast chlorophyll a and carotenoids increased to maxima at 19 μW cm-2. The chlorophyll a and c and carotenoid content of N. valdestriata were also maximal at 19 μW cm-2. Photosynthetic rates, measured by respirometry, suggested that the diatoms were photoinhibited at higher light intensities and did well at moderately low light intensities (175μW cm-2). The photocompensation points of all 4 diatoms were about 2% of the light available in the spring at 1-m depth at Elat on the Red Sea. At Elat the photocompensation point would lie between 40 and 50 m if the algae were free in nature. The amount of attenuation of light by the shells of the host has not yet been measured. Presumably photocompensation of the algae within hosts is reached at depths less than 40 m.

    Notes: Abstract. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the accuracy of MR myelography in depicting disc herniation in the lumbar spine when compared with conventional MRI in patients presenting with clinical evidence of disc herniation. One hundred patients referred for conventional MR imaging of the lumbar spine also had coronal MR (TR 9000 ms, TE 272 ms eff, NEX 3, echo train length 32) myelography performed. Three experienced observers compared magnetic resonance myelography (MRM) with conventional lumbar spine MR using the following variables: visibility of thecal sac and nerve roots, and the presence, location and severity of disc herniation. Disc protrusions were seen at 110 disc space levels on conventional MR images as opposed to 93 on MRM. However, only 72 % of lesions seen on conventional MR were diagnosed by MRM. Similarly, only 63.8 % of nerve root compression abnormalities seen at conventional MR were visualized when compared with conventional MRM. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of MRM when compared with conventional MR was 72, 93 and 85 %, respectively. The MRM technique yields images that resemble conventional myelography and may be used to help confirm abnormalities seen on conventional MR in selected cases; however, the large number of false-positive and false-negative examinations indicates that caution should be used in interpreting MRM images.

    Notes: Abstract. Renal artery stenosis (RAS) is a treatable cause of hypertension and renal failure for which no ideal screening technique is currently available. We evaluated the use of dynamic gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for the diagnosis of RAS. Sixty-two patients with secondary hypertension were enrolled in the study. All patients had conventional renal angiography and gadolinium enhanced MRA. The sequence used was a 3D FMP SPGR sequence with the following parameters (TR: 26 ms, TE: 6.9 ms, flip angle 40 °, field of view 36 × 36 cm, matrix 246 × 256, 1 excitation). Gadolinium 0.3 mmol/kg was administered and 60 1.5-mm-thick partitions were obtained over a duration of 3.5 min. The MRA images were then compared with conventional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) images. Conventional DSA demonstrated 138 renal arteries, whereas gadolinium-enhanced MRA demonstrated 129 (93 %). Twenty-one renal artery stenoses and four occluded arteries were seen at conventional DSA. Gadolinium-enhanced MRA had a sensitivity of 88 %, specificity of 98 %, accuracy of 96 %, positive predictive value of 92 % and negative predictive value of 97 % when compared with conventional DSA. Gadolinium-enhanced MRA is an accurate technique for identifying patients with RAS. It is less sensitive in picking up accessory renal arteries.

    Notes: A sample positioner and an electron energy analyzer for studies of photofield emission have been designed and constructed. The sample positioner allows photofield emission from every facet of a field emitter to be measured under illumination at arbitrary angles of light incidence and polarization. The electrons emitted from a selected facet are decelerated to a kinetic energy E0 by a series of cylindrical lenses and introduced into either one of two energy analyzers. The deflection energy analyzer, formed from two identical 127° cylindrical analyzers, is used when high-energy resolution is required. The full width at half-maximum height of the resolution function of this analyzer is proportional to E0 down to a minimum kinetic energy which is less than 0.5 eV, and is given by ΔEFWHM=(0.0390±0.0006)E0. The throughput depends on E0 due to a combination of resolution and aperturing effects, and varies as E3/20. The signal-to-noise ratio of the analyzer is limited to 2×104 by inelastic scattering of electrons. The retardation energy analyzer is used for aligning the system and for measuring the energy-integrated current.

    Notes: An improved optical system has been designed for use in experimental studies of photofield emission. By increasing the angle of convergence of the focused laser beam onto the field emitter a smaller focal spot is obtained. For a given beam intensity, this results in a substantial increase in the irradiance at the emitting surface. In addition, the smaller focal spot reduces the laser-induced temperature rise of the field emitter for a given irradiance. The design of the improved optical system is discussed and its performance is evaluated.

    Notes: Abstract It is classically assumed that the far field of a round turbulent jet discharging into quiescent fluid has a unique behavior characterized only by its momentum flux. However, there is now considerable evidence that different discharge conditions at the jet nozzle exit can give rise to very different far-field flows. Perhaps the most striking examples of these are the bifurcating and blooming jets produced by appropriate combinations of controlled axial and circumferential excitations at the nozzle exit. With the right excitations, a jet can be made to divide into two separate jets (bifurcating jet), each of which carries half the axial momentum and spreads in a manner similar to a single jet. Trifurcating jets can also be produced. Other excitations can produce blooming jets, in which the jet explodes into a shower of vortex rings, producing a far-field flow that is quite unlike a normal unexcited jet. Bifurcating and blooming jets exhibit much greater mixing than normal jets, suggesting possible applications in flow control. This article summarizes our work on bifurcating and blooming jets, which began with our discovery of them in the early 1980s and continued through the mid- 1990s. One of us (D.E.P.) continued exploration of flow control using excited jets, first at the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, and more recently at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The key to flow control is the manipulation of the large vortical structures in the near field of the jet. Ultimately this work, and that of others, led to full-scale testing of jet engine exhaust mixing control. There it was shown that the jet temperature downstream of the engine can be very significantly reduced by application of well-designed and easily implemented excitation at the engine discharge, thereby solving problems encountered during ground operations. Related jet control work by other investigators is included in this review.
