Notes: Abstract  Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways in France to minimize environmental pollution by keeping pollutants from spreading over the surrounding area. In the current work, eight core samples were collected from the bottom of a retention pond located along the A-71 motorway in Sologne to study the pollution of sediment by heavy metals and their diagenetic behaviour. The vertical concentration profiles of metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Fe and Mn) in sediment as well as in interstitial water were determined. Especially in the case of the sediment, a sequential extraction method was employed to investigate how the movement of each metal is associated with the other metals and with other solid phases such as organic matter. In addition, to investigate the relative mobility of the metals, the distribution coefficients (KD) were also determined. The concentrations of the metals were always found to be highest in the topmost layer of sediment. This so-called surface enrichment is caused by a substantial increase of the non-detrital fraction of these metals at the sediment surface. For instance, the accumulation of Pb and Zn is associated with the increase in the "fraction II" in the sequential extraction. The accumulation of Cd at the surface (0–2 cm) is partly due to the liberation of Cd from the particles during early diagenesis. However, the major factor contributing to the accumulation of Cd at the sediment surface is attributed to the dissolution of Cd from polluted roadside soil during the periods of rainstorms and its subsequent redeposition on the sediment surface after being carried to the retention pond. KD values for Zn and Cd were found to decrease with depth, while KD values for Pb increased. Based on the KD values, the relative mobilities of the studied metals were determined to be as follows: Mn〉Zn〉Cd〉Pb, for the upper layer, and Mn〉Cd〉Zn〉Pb, for the layers below.

Notes: [Auszug] The uranium monophosphide was prepared by reaction of the elements using the Faraday method and thermally degrading the resulting triuranium tetraphosphide, U3P4, to uranium monophosphide at 1,400 C. Analysis showed that it contained 0.38 per cent oxygen. An X-ray diffraction pattern showed the ...

Notes: In studying 150 cases of gastric cancer, 93 (62%) were found to be CEA-positive. Among them, 5 cases had concurrent elevation of serum AFP over 200 ng/ml and appearance of serum CPALP. Further, there were another 2 cases simultaneously positive in serum CPALP. All these 7 cases were of pathologically well-differentiated adenocarcinoma with liver metastases.Immunohistologically, CEA was observed on the surface of cancer cells as well as in glandular lumens of cancer tissues, forming a centroglandular pattern, while CPALP was detected in cytoplasm of cancer cells generally but absent in glandular lumens, and no formation of centroglandular pattern was observed. In contrast, most of the cancer cells were found AFP-negative except for some cancer cells with abundant chromatin in nucleus and acidophilic cytoplasm, in which AFP was detected in cytoplasm. Furthermore, AFP was also scarcely observed in cytoplasm of some normal liver transient cells scattered close to metastatic cancer lesions, suggesting that in gastric cancer, occurrences of CEA, AFP and CPALP originate from cancer cells while mild amounts of AFP are also being synthesized in some normal liver transient cells scattered close to metastatic cancer lesions.

Notes: CEA samples were prepared individually from liver metastases of gastric and colonic cancer, and purified with gel filtrations, block electrophoresis and Con A affinity chromatography (the latter was not performed in all cases). Anti-CEA antisera were produced in 7 and 4 guinea pigs against CEA of gastric cancer and colonic cancer respectively. Upon extensive absorptions with PCA extracts of normal tissues (rich of NCA) and NCA-2, their anti-CEA activities were examined on micro-Ouchterlony plates and by immunofluorescence techniques. There were two types of anti-CEA antibodies, as observed in our previous study [9], in which crude samples of CEA were utilized as immunogens: a type that showed identical reaction to CEA of adenocarcinomas of the digestive system, squamous cell carcinomas of endodermally derived organs, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid as well as tissues of fetal gastro-intestinal tract but not to others, while the other type was proven to be specific to gastric or colonic cancer depending on cancer tissues from which the immunized CEA was extracted. In immunofluorescence study, no reaction of these organ-specific anti-CEA antibodies to fetal tissues was observed.Further, CEA-M (Con A binding fraction) and CEA-P (Con A non-binding fraction) separated by Con A affinity chromatography, showed identical reaction to any types of anti-CEA antibodies, though CEA-P was apparently less antigenic.

Notes: Abstract Eleven of 16 samples of rice on sale in rice shops and supermarkets in Hong Kong contained Bacillus cereus. Although B. cereus counts did not exceed 100 bacteria/g in most of the positive samples, a sample of Thai red rice and a poor quality rice originating from China contained between 300 to 1000 cells/g and 104 to 2×105 cells/g, respectively. Nine strains produced an enterotoxin responsible for the diarrhoeal-type B. cereus food poisoning and seven of these strains also produced a haemolysin (haemolysin BL), a dermonecrotic vascular permeability factor which may be a virulence determinant in diarrhoeal illness caused by this bacterium.

Notes: Abstract Oligodendroglia were isolated from bovine brain, and a “crude”, microsomal fraction obtained from cell homogenates was subfractionated into myelin (MP), plasma membranes (PM), Golgi (GF), smooth (SER) and rough (RER) endoplasmic membranes using discontinuous-sucrose gradient centrifugation. The submicrosomal fractions were characterized by ultrastructural examination and analysis of the specific organelle markers. The myelin and plasma membrane rich fractions contained characteristically the highest amounts of the lipid with lower mole percentages of total phospholipids and phosphatidylcholine, and higher concentrations of phosphatidylethanolamine (+plasmalogens), cholesterol and galactolipids. Considerable amounts of the typical myelin galactolipids (galacto-cerebrosides, sulfatides and monogalactosyl diglycerides) were also found in the Golgi fraction (GF). The GF fraction had the greatest enrichment of glycolipid-forming galactosyltransferases, and the distribution of these enzymes correlated well with that of the Golgi marker enzymes. The results give evidence that intracellular Golgi apparatus of oligodendroglia is rich in the myelin-specific lipids, and suggest its involvement in the synthesis and processing of myelin lipids.

Notes: A general analytical solution, which is more explicit than the one given by Schiffman and Stein,1 for the problem of one-dimensional consolidation of layered soils is presented. A relevant computer program is developed and the computed results on some examples are included. From these results, an in-depth study on the one-dimensional consolidation behaviour of layered systems is then made. It is demonstrated through these examples that both the solution technique and the computer program developed are very efficient. It is found that the effects of coefficients of permeability and volume compressibility of soil on the consolidation of layered systems are different and cannot be embodied into the coefficient of consolidation of soil. The stiffness of soil layer also plays an important role on the rate of consolidation.
