    Notes: Summary Genetically diabetic mice (C57 BLKsJ db/ db) aged 5–6 weeks were given a diet containing 20% by weight of non-nutritive bulk and compared with age matched control diabetic mice on a normal diet (fibre content 4.5%) and non-diabetic mice. The duration of study was 12 weeks. No adverse effects were observed in animals given the high fibre diet. Total food consumption was greater in mice receiving the fibre enriched diet, but their absolute caloric intake was 6% less than control diabetic mice. Both groups exhibited similar rates of growth and development. Water intake in the experimental diabetic mice was reduced and similar to that of normal non-diabetic mice. Fasting blood glucose was significantly decreased in the experimental diabetic mice at 12 weeks. Renal pathological lesions in the control diabetic mice showed glomerular mesangial expansion and deposition of immunoglobulins within the mesangium. The experimental diabetic animals exhibited significantly less renal pathology, including light and immunofluorescent lesions. It is concluded that addition of non-absorbable fibre to the diet of genetically diabetic mice improves glycaemic control and retards the development of diabetic nephropathy.

    Notes: Summary Extracellular single-unit techniques were employed to record unitary activity simultaneously from the thalamic ventral posterior medial (VPM) nucleus and the ipsilateral primary somatosensory cortex of adult rats. Cross-correlation analysis triggered by the spontaneous firing of thalamocortical relay neurons in VPM and the discharge of layer IV neurons in the corresponding ipsilateral cortical barrel indicated that the paired-units included in this study were strongly correlated in their activity. The baseline responses of highly correlated cortical/thalamic pairs to a 10 ms deflection of a vibrissa on the contralateral side were measured using poststimulus time histograms. After establishing the baseline response, high frequency activity in VPM was induced in one of two ways: i) direct electrical stimulation of thalamic neurons or ii) whisker stimulation in the presence of bicuculline methiodide (BIC) released near the thalamic neurons. Both methods resulted in a conditioning stimulus (CS) paradigm consisting of “bursts” of high-frequency activity (50–100 Hz) with an inter-burst interval of 150 ms (∼7 Hz). Almost immediately following the presentation of the CS, the response of layer IV cortical neurons to vibrissa stimulation increased by 37–62% over baseline values, which was maintained after the effects of BIC had worn off in VPM. This enhancement in the response of the cortical neurons was not accompanied by a concomitant increase in the thalamic responses. Thus, these results strongly suggest that the potentiation first occurred at the thalamocortical synapse.

    Notes: Titanium bulk and dislocation diffusion coefficients at 1000 °C have been determined for Ti in single crystal α-Al2O3(0001) for three types of samples: (i) Ti evaporated onto Al2O3, (ii) 48Ti+at 100 eV deposited onto Al2O3, and (iii) 48Ti+ at 100 eV deposited onto radiation damaged Al2O3 (damage inflected by implantation of 46Ti+ at 7 keV). Diffusion penetration profiles were obtained by using secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling techniques. For the deposited and implanted Ti+ samples, the bulk diffusion coefficients (D) are 5.4×10−21 and 5.6×10−17 m2 s−1, respectively, and dislocation diffusion coefficients are 3.6×10−17 and 1.4×10−12 m2 s−1, respectively. Comparing the D's for Ti in the undamaged and damaged Al2O3, the D's for the latter samples are higher by a factor of 104–105, reflecting the radiation enhanced diffusion due to the defect structure inflected by the implanted 7 keV 46Ti+. Comparing the D's for Ti deposited onto Al2O3 (both the evaporated and 100 eV 48Ti+ samples) with those for Cr deposited onto Al2O3, the Ti D's are larger by a factor of 10, reflecting the influence of the valence state of the cation. These results show that cationic diffusion coefficients in Al2O3 can be controlled by varying the level of defects in the crystal. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ti bulk diffusion coefficients have been determined for Ti in single crystal MgO(100) for four types of samples: Ti evaporated onto MgO and Ti evaporated onto MgO that was pre-bombarded with 7 keV Cl+, Ar+, and Cr+, respectively. Diffusion was induced by annealing to 1000 °C following the evaporation or pre-bombardment. Diffusion penetration profiles were obtained by using secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling techniques. A model that includes a depth-dependent bulk diffusion coefficient was used to analyze the observed radiation enhanced diffusion (RED) effects. The bulk diffusion coefficients are of the order of 10−20 m2/s and are enhanced due to the defect structure inflected by the ion pre-bombardment. Different RED effects for the samples pre-bombarded with Cl+, Ar+, and Cr+ were observed despite their very similar ballistic implantation parameters. The diffusion model was extended to include the effects of lattice deformation, requirement of electrical neutrality, and chemical effects such as volatile compound formation. This extended model satisfactorily explains the RED differences observed for Cl+, Ar+, and Cr+ implantation. Our results show that RED is strongly influenced by the chemical properties of implanted ions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The gel strength of the minced fish product made from the unwashed mullet mince was found higher than that of the washed product. Transglutaminase (TGase) was found in the water soluble fraction of mullet muscle. It's optimal temperature was at 30C to 35C and the optimal pH was 7.5 to 7.7. Increased setting time at 30C, increased the gel strength of the minced fish product produced from the unwashed mullet mince.p-Chloromercuribenzoate (PCMB), an inhibitor to TGase was added to the mullet mince up to 2.0 mM, the mince was set at 35C and then heated to 85C. The gel strength of the product was inversely correlated to the PCMB concentration, Y1= - 0.45X + 1.66 (r = 0.95). Studies of setting of the mullet mince at temperatures ranging 20 to 60C indicated that maximal gel strength was obtained at 35C, coinciding with the optimal temperature of TGase. Meat from 21.5 monthold grey mullet produced a minced product of higher gel strength than those produced from younger fish, although the muscle TGase activities were not significantly different.

    Notes: It is proposed that the nucleation and growth of the amorphous phase through the solid-state amorphizing reaction in thin-film diffusion couples can be predicted by using the concept of effective driving force. The effective driving force consists of two factors: (i) the thermodynamic driving force given by maximum free-energy difference between the physical mixture of binary elements and the amorphous phase (ΔGmax), and (ii) the kinetic factor given by a ratio of the effective radius of the interstitial site in the host matrix to the atomic radius of the diffusing species (Rm/d). From the comparison of reported experimental results, it is shown that the criterion of effective driving force holds well for predicting the nucleation of the amorphous phase in metal/silicon systems as well as that of metal/metal systems. In addition, the concept of effective driving force holds well for predicting the growth tendency of the amorphous phase in metal/silicon systems. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
