Notes: The semi-solid forming (SSF) of aluminum alloys offers many advantages overconventional casting processes. Nevertheless, the semi-solid forming is still far from its fullcommercial potential and mainly used in specific niche markets. The market positioning requiressimple, low cost, and versatile SSF processes that are capable of processing a wide range of alloycomposition including wrought alloy compositions. However, wrought alloys must be adapted toobtain the desired semi-solid processing ability and proper mechanical properties. The processing ofthese attractive alloys with the SEED process offers the possibility to better target specificapplications and customers’ needs. In the present paper, the alloy development of AA-6061 aimingto minimize the hot tearing propensity during forming process is reported. An overview of theindustrial SEED process used to produce the semi-solid AA-6061 feedstock is presented. Themechanical properties of the cast parts subjected to a specific heat treatment were evaluated. As partof the joint effort between Alcan International Limited and the National Research Council ofCanada (NRC), the fatigue results obtained from the semi-solid AA-6061 die cast parts will be alsoreported

Notes: The “Rheo-Characterizer” is an apparatus designed to assess the quality control of thesemi-solid material. The working principle is based on the recording and subsequent analysis of theforce required to transversally cut the semi-solid slurry at constant speed. Semi-solid slurriesproduced under different conditions while using the SEED process were analyzed with the “Rheo-Characterizer”. The TiB2 grain refiner was also added to evaluate the impact on the microstructureand the cutting force. The microstructural features were measured and the grain size was analyzedfor the different processing conditions. The effect of the cutting temperature on the resulting curvewas also investigated. The results show that the “Rheo-Characterizer” is capable of differentiatingbetween the varied microstructural morphologies and the solid fraction of the billet

Notes: As part of the foundry technology program, Alcan is developing a liquid-based slurrymakingprocess known as the SEED technology for semi-solid forming. The technology ispresently entering the industrial and commercial stages, and will be used by the first customers inlate 2006. The semi-solid process offers many advantages to economically fabricate near-net-shapeparts having superior quality. The SEED process helps to overcome problems experienced withthixocasting and especially the high cost of feedstock. The SEED process involves two main steps:1) heat extraction to achieve a desired liquid/solid mixture, and 2) drainage of an excess liquid toproduce a self-supporting semi-solid slug that is formed under pressure. An overview of theindustrial SEED technology advantages such as the alloy processing flexibility (A356, AA6061)and large slug dimensions and weights, is presented. The influence of the SEED processingparameters (slurry preparation) on the final mechanical properties and the microstructure evolutionis also reported
