Notes: The photopolymerization of vinyl fluoride, in the presence of peroxide, was studied in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in bulk. It was found that high rates of reaction could be obtained in spite of the fact that the polymer precipitates at an early stage. By continuous supply of monomer the precipitated polymer was converted into a transparent bulk polymer.

Notes: Dispersion polymerization of styrene in the particle size range of 10 μ with lauroyl peroxide as initiator results in a double-peak molecular weight (MW) distribution. The high-MW fraction was due to emulsion polymerization. The same phenomenon also exists in AIBN and benzoyl peroxide initiation, although it is less obvious. The kinetics of the reaction for dispersion polymerization was dependent on the concentration of the dispersing agent and the nature of the initiator.

Notes: Vinyl fluoride was polymerized by photochemical initiation in a continuous-flow cylindrical reactor at room temperature and at pressures of up to 30 atm. Copolymers with vinyl acetate were prepared in order to improve the solubility and processability of poly(vinyl fluoride) (PVF). The copolymers were hydrolyzed to the corresponding vinyl alcohol copolymers and yielded hydrophilic films that are strong and flexible only when swollen by water. It was found that on hydrolysis the Tg, Tm, and heat of fusion as well as degree of crystallinity increased. It was suggested that PVF and the copolymers with vinyl alcohol are isomorphous.

Notes: Vinyl fluoride was polymerized, at low temperatures and pressures, by photo- and γ-ray initiation. The kinetics of this heterogeneous polymerization reaction was studied and a general scheme was proposed to explain the experimental results. The scheme is based on the assumption that the main site of the polymerization is in the “polymer phase.” The solvent used determines the rate of the reaction by its effect on the swelling of the polymer. The degree of polymerization is determined mainly by transfer reactions.

Notes: The thermal stability of poly(vinyl fluoride) (PVF) was studied by thermal gravimetry and mass spectrometry (TGA and TGA-MS). In low-molecular-weight polymers a two-step decomposition pattern was observed. It consisted of the dehydrofluorination to a polyene chain followed by decomposition of the resulting polyene at higher temperatures. Copolymers of vinyl fluoride-vinyl acetate (VF-VAc) and vinyl fluoride-vinyl chloride (VF-VCl) showed a simultaneous evolution of hydrofluoric acid and acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, respectively. This suggests that after the elimination of the weakest link a spontaneous elimination of neighboring HF molecules takes place.

Notes: The initiator system AgNO3-tetraethyl lead was used for the polymerization of vinyl fluoride. Dimethyl sulfoxide was found to have a specific effect on the half-life of the initiating system, which leads to long reaction times and high conversions at ambient temperatures. This effect was explained by the complexing power of DMSO on silver ions, which slows down the rate of formation of AgEt and permits the polymerization to proceed for longer periods than in other solvents. The kinetics of the polymerization agreed with the scheme developed earlier. Tetraethyl lead acts as a powerful chain transfer agent and determines to a large extent the resulting polymers.

Notes: Polyelectrolyte submicron microcapsules were prepared by interfacial crosslinking of an aqueous salt solution of poly(ethyleneimine) and a toluene solution of brominated poly-(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide). The two solutions were brought together and mixed by sonication. As a result, a stable emulsion was obtained, which was subsequently cast into a membrane in which the microcapsules were embedded. The salt solution contained in the microcapsules could be released under controlled conditions. The rates of release were measured. They could be controlled by applying osmotic pressures, by additional quaternization of the membrane, or by modification of the structure of the capsule wall by introduction of a surfactant.
