Notes: Abstract We report a rare case of primary hyperaldosteronism in an 11-year-old female patient due to a unilateral adrenal cortical adenoma. The patient presented with hypertension, hypokalaemia and metabolic alkalosis associated with inappropriate kaliuresis. The diagnosis was supported by the following laboratory findings: elevated plasma aldosterone, suppressed plasma renin activity, nonsuppressible aldosterone secretion following saline infusion and absent plasma aldosterone response to ambulation. MRI revealed a 1 cm diameter adrenal tumour on the left side. Even though the NP-59 scintigraphy gave a negative result, laparotomy with left adrenalectomy was performed. Pathological examination confirmed an adenoma in the adrenal cortex. The patient's blood pressure and biochemical laboratory data normalized postoperatively within 2 days. We recommend that in hypertensive children with hypokalaemia and metabolic alkalosis, primary aldosteronism should be considered.

Notes: Experiments were conducted to determine: (i) the effects of temperature and duration of continuous wet periods on the infection of pear seedlings by conidia of Venturia nashicola, the causal agent of pear scab; and (ii) the effects of the length and temperature of dry interrupting periods on the mortality of infecting conidia. Average number of scab lesions per leaf increased with increasing duration of wetness. Logistic models adequately described the change in the average number of scab lesions per leaf at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25°C over the wetness duration. At 30°C, only a few lesions developed. Simple polynomial models satisfactorily described the relationship of the three logistic model parameters (maximum number of lesions, rate of appearance and the time to 50% of the maximum number of lesions) with temperature. The optimum temperature for infection was found to be approximately 20°C. The relationship between mortality and the length of a dry period interrupting an infection process can be satisfactorily described by an exponential model. The rate of mortality at 10, 16 and 22°C did not differ significantly, but was significantly less than that at 28°C.

Notes: Apparent superstructures have been observed with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on well-ordered Ag(110) surfaces. These superstructures are due to the discrete sampling of the atomic corrugation in STM. Such sampling effects may explain superstructures observed previously with STM on graphite surfaces. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Fabrication of monolithic Ti3SiC2 has been investigated through the route of reactive sintering of Ti/Si/2TiC mixtures. Significant phase differences existed between the surface and the interior of as-synthesized products due to the evaporation of Si during the reaction process. The use of a 3Ti/SiC/C mixture as a powder bed could control the evaporation of Si and develop monolithic Ti3SiC2. A reaction model for the formation of Ti3SiC2 in the Ti/Si/2TiC system is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The electrical resistance method, metallograph analysis, TEM observation and X-ray diffraction analysis have been employed to investigate the influence of heat treatment on the transformation hysteresis (Af-Ms) of CuAlNiMnTi shape-memory alloys (SMAs). It was found that when the quenching specimens were subjected to ageing treatment, the transformation temperature was decreased and the transformation hysteresis was initially increased, but then tended towards stability; when the quenched specimens were subjected to moderate-temperature treatment at 600
