    Notes: Abstract.  A dynamic Monte-Carlo program, including an improved BIGS (Bombardment-Induced Gibbsian Segregation) model was employed to study the matrix effect of BIGS and its influence on Cu depletion at the subsurface under 1 keV Ar-ion bombardment of a Cu–Ni alloy. The calculation results show that not only at high fluences (the steady state) but also at low fluences, the Cu subsurface depletion depends on its bulk composition. This is because the atomic jump rate W 21 of Cu from the second layer to the first layer is correlated to Cu bulk composition at any fluence. We also found that the product of the non-segregating species concentration at the first layer with the segregating species concentration at the second layer plays a more important role than other parameters in determining W 21 under low current conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Cyclic tensile fatigue tests were performed on 100±20 nm, and 0.35 μm 3Y-TZP ceramic specimens at room temperature. Localized superplastic deformation of the grains in the 100 nm material at and near to the fracture surfaces was first identified by AFM imaging. Slip band-like microfeatures, similar to those reported on some metals, were also unexpectedly seen to develop on the side faces. In contrast, the 0.35 μm specimens retained their equiaxed grain morphology after undergoing similar testing conditions. The micromechanisms underlining these phenomena were discussed. Grain boundary diffusion of the respective atomic species is reasoned to be the major governing process in operation. And the contribution of a dislocation slip mechanism is considered to play a possible or parallel role. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

    Notes: Summary Pollen tubes ofLilium longiflorum were fixed with glutaraldehyde and investigated unsectioned with the Oxford scanning proton microprobe (SPM). Two-dimensional maps which show the distribution and concentration of phosphorus, sulphur, chlorine, potassium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc and arsenic are presented. The maps show that, within the pollen tube tip region, calcium and zinc exhibit relatively steep longitudinal concentration gradients compared to the more flat distributions of phosphorus and sulphur. Chlorine, potassium, iron and copper appear equally distributed along the tube. All elements with the expception of arsenic show the highest concentration within the cell protoplasm and not in the cell wall. Additional signals of arsenic, chlorine and potassium originate from the remaining fixative dried around the tube, containing also the free ions of the cell. The arsenic signals originate exclusively from the buffer used during fixation. The different maps are compared and discussed in relation to their significance to the pollen tubes.
