    Notes: Three-dimensional hydro-mechanical coupling analyses have been conducted on thewater-tight structure of the cofferdam for both intake and outlet of Taian pumped storage power station, located in Shandong Province of China. In addition, the effects of excavation on the cofferdam and foundation slopes were also studied by using the 3D FLAC. The calculation results show that the central core of high-pressure grouting has a prefect anti-seepage effect and therefore is able to strengthen the stability of the cofferdam and foundation slopes. The excavation process has only some local effects on the cofferdam and does not greatly affect the global stability of the cofferdam. Therefore, no failure takes place around slope toes. The results show that the width of platform left on the excavation side is reasonable

    Notes: The method of bolt-grouting supporting, grouting into surrounding rock mass by bolts in jointed rock mass roadway, is obtained wide application. However, it is difficult to determine rock mass parameter of bolt-grouting supporting. This paper begins with the displacement, which is measured easily in practice. The method of back analysis is adopted to calculate the equivalent mechanics parameters of bolt-grouting rock mass. In process of back analysis three mechanics models is supposed which are homogeneous elastic model, inhomogeneous elastic model and elastic-plasticmodel and corresponding algorithm is established. What's more, this paper discusses the stability of inverse algorithm and copes the problem of back analysis parameter probably instable with QR decomposed algorithm and singular value decomposed algorithm, which will be a theoretical base to determine the mechanics parameter of bolt-grouting supporting rock mass and to estimate the surrounding rock stability. In a word, the method is established to estimate mechanics parameters of bolt-grouting jointed surrounding rock mass, and some significant results are obtained, which are of reference for actual project

    Notes: Lead magnesium niobate-lead titannate single crystal (abbreviated as PMNT) was usedto fabricate PMNT/polymer 1-3-2 piezoelectric composite with different volume fractions of PMNT,by dicing single crystal PMNT along mutually perpendicular two directions on the surface and thenfilling polymer into grooves. The piezoelectric, dielectric and electromechanical properties of thenovel composite were determined. It was demonstrated that a thickness electromechanical couplingcoefficient of the composites could reach as high as 0.75 and acoustic impendence decreased to14.9 Mrayls (lower than 30 Mrayls of PMNT). The pulse-echo waveforms of the compositeswithout backing were also measured. It showed a -6dB bandwidth of 88% at the center frequency of0.95MHz

    Notes: Abstract Three unsaturated subsurface paleosols influenced by moisture recharge, including a highly developed calcic paleosol, were studied to investigate the microbiology of paleosols. Two near-surface paleosols, one impacted by moisture recharge and the other beyond the influence of recharge, were also sampled to directly assess the effect of moisture recharge on the activity and composition of the microbial community associated with paleosols. The highly developed paleosol had a higher population of culturable heterotrophs, a greater glucose mineralization potential, a higher microbial diversity based on colony morphology, and a more than 20-fold higher concentration of ATP than the two weakly developed paleosols. The recharged near-surface paleosol, as compared to the near-surface paleosol unaffected by recharge, had a lower population of culturable heterotrophs, smaller mineralization rate constant, and lower richness based on colony morphology. The recharged paleosols contained predominantly gram-negative isolates, whereas the paleosol unaffected by recharge contained predominantly gram-positive isolates. Storage at 4°C of subsurface and near-surface paleosol samples containing high water potential increased the population of culturable aerobic heterotrophs, decreased diversity in colony morphology, and increased first-order rate constants and decreased lag times for glucose mineralization. These results indicate that aerobic heterotrophs are present in deep vadose zone paleosols and that there is potential for stimulation of their in situ growth and activity.

    Notes: Summary In order to determine the possible contribution of the GLUT1 (HepG2) glucose transporter gene to the inheritance of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), two restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) and the related haplotypes at this locus were studied in 48 Italian diabetic patients and 58 normal subjects. Genotype frequencies for the XbaI polymorphism were significantly different between patients and controls (XbaI: χ2 = 9.80, df= 2, P 〈 0.0079). A significant difference was also found in the allele frequencies between NIDDM patients and controls (χ2 =9.39, df = 1, P 〈 0.0022), whereas no differences were found for the StuI RFLP. No linkage disequilibrium was detected between the XbaI and StuI RFLPs in this sample. The analysis of the four haplotype frequencies (X1S1, X1S2, X2S1, X2S2) revealed a significant difference between diabetic patients and controls (χ2 = 14.26, df =3, P 〈 0.002). By comparing single haplotype frequencies, a significant difference between the two groups was found for the X1S1 and X2S2 haplotypes. A two-allele RFLP at the GLUT4 (muscle/adipocyte) glucose transporter gene, detected with the restriction enzyme KpnI, was also examined; no differences were found between patients and controls for this RFLP. The finding of an association between polymorphic markers at the GLUT1 transporter and NIDDM suggests that this locus may contribute to the inherited susceptibility to the disease in this Italian population.

    Notes: Abstract Calcium-binding and biochemical studies have been applied to characterize the state of the carboxylate and protein-bound phosphate groups in the EDTA-demineralized matrices of rat bone and dentine. The organic phosphate and carboxylate content of demineralized bone is virtually identical to that of purified steer skin collagen whereas demineralized dentine has a significantly higher phosphate and carboxylate content, presumably due to the presence of an acidic non-collagenous phosphoprotein. Two classes of calcium-binding sites can be detected in demineralized bone, demineralized dentine, and purified, reconstituted collagen. The number of strong calcium-binding sites correlates with the number of protein-bound phosphate groups. Depending on the preparative procedure, seven to nine such sites (per collagen molecule) are present in dentine, and one to two in the purified reconstituted collagen and in bone. The binding constant for the dentinal sites (1.1×104 M−1), however, is 20 times greater than that for bone or reconstituted collagen fibrils from skin. We tentatively conclude that the strong calcium-binding site in bone and reconstituted collagen is of the form protein-PO 4 − Ca++ whereas in dentine it is of the form the weak binding sites in bone and dentine are of the form protein-COO-Ca++; and that approximately 160 of the 217 carboxylate groups of the collagen molecules of dentine or bone are present as electrostatic linkages of the form protein-COO−+H3N-protein.

    Notes: Under the action of compressive load, the growth and coalescence containing flaws inbrittle materials (rock and rocklike materials e.g.) will result in the local buckling and globalfracture of rockmass. But, the mechanisms on propagation and coalescence of 3-dimensionalinternal flaws are not clear till now. We examine brittle fractures of manmade specimens usingfrozen casting resin and rocklike material to observe 3D internal flaws growth process at about -30°C. A team of specimens containing three internal flaws is measured; flaws are made of threeparallel oblong aluminum films. The propagation and coalescence pattern of three internal flaws isobserved under compressive stress. An interesting phenomenon is that the crack initiated from thesecond flaw quickly turns to the one induced from the third flaw and forms a bigger fracture plane,then splits the specimen. It shows that the flaw distribution pattern will greatly affect the flawsgrowth and coalescence process. The mechanisms that lead to the wing and anti-wing crackinitiation and coalescence are described

    Notes: The ceramic coating was formed by micro-plasma arc oxidation (MPAO) on AZ91Dmagnesium alloy. The surface and section morphology of coatings were observed using scanning electronmicroscopy. The phase composition of coatings was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The method of salt fogexperimental was carried out to proof-test performances of anti-corrosion of material. The results showedthat the ceramic coating was composed by loose layer and compact layer. The coating surface has a largenumber of grains with various sizes. In addition, there is also a lot of pore in the loose layer, but thecompact layer is tighter than the loose layer. Compact layer has a good combination with substratemagnesium alloy. The MPAO coating is mainly composed of silica oxide (MgAl2Si3O12 and β-Mg2SiO4and (Mg4Al14) (Al4Si2)O20) and composite oxide of Mg and Al (δ-MgAl28O4). The performance ofresistant corrosion of AZ91D coved by ceramic coating is higher than AZ91D magnesium alloy. Thecorrosion ratio of AZ91D alloy coved by ceramic coatings to AZ91D alloy is 1:8.61
