    Notes: Abstract  Nitric oxide (NO) possibly plays an important role in the events resulting in hyperalgesia. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is a key enzyme in the production of NO. In this study, the relationship between NOS and hyperalgesia in a rat chronic arthritis model was tested. Chronic arthritis was induced by injection of incomplete Freund’s adjuvant into the knee joint cavity unilaterally. The paw withdrawal latency (PWL) to radiant heat was used to detect secondary thermal hyperalgesia induced by the arthritis. After 1 day the PWL of the arthritic hindpaw decreased and it reached its nadir at 3 days after induction of arthritis. The lumbar and cervical enlargement of the spinal cord were removed in different groups of animals 3, 7, 14, or 21 days after induction of arthritis, and frozen tissue sections were cut. Two series of sections were incubated with polyclonal antibodies to neuronal NOS (nNOS) or to inducible NOS (iNOS). nNOS was found to increase gradually in laminae I–III in the lumber but not in the cervical enlargement. The change became most obvious 14 days after induction of arthritis as compared to the control animals. Ependymal cells around the central canal of the lumbar enlargement were more densely stained by anti-iNOS after arthritis. A corresponding change was also found in the cervical enlargement. Computer-assisted image analysis revealed that the mean density of the affected areas in the treated group increased significantly compared with the control animals. This study suggests that the expression of both nNOS and iNOS increase following induction of chronic arthritis, which in turn would presumably lead to an increase in the production of NO. This process could be involved in mediation of the secondary thermal hyperalgesia induced by chronic arthritis.

    Notes: At a concentration of 0.4 μg purified pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP)/ml, the formation of local lesions on tobacco leaves caused by tobacco mosaic virus infection was completely inhibited and at 25 ng PAP/ ml. 68% inhibition was still obtained. PAP protected plants from infection by viruses from seven virus groups-five RNA viruses: tobacco mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic virus, alfalfa mosaic virus, potato virus X and potato virus Y; and two DNA viruses: African cassava mosaic virus (ssDNA) and cauliflower mosaic virus (dsDNA). Virus infection was probably blocked by PAP at a very early stage. PAP infiltrated into the intercellular spaces through the lower surfaces of leaves inhibited infection by virus inoculated on the upper leaf surface, and partially prevented PVY transmission by aphids. However. PAP did not show any activity against two bacterial and six fungal pathogens.

    Notes: Spin labeling techniques, specifically the use of electron-spin-polarized He(2 3S) metastable atoms coupled with energy-resolved spin analysis of the ejected electrons, are used to investigate the dynamics of metastable atom deexcitation by molecules in a film several monolayers thick condensed on a cooled Cu(100) surface. Data for CO2, H2O, Cl2, and O2 films show that metastable deexcitation is analogous to gas-phase Penning ionization, i.e., the condensed molecules can be considered as a "solid gas.'' Detailed differences are, however, evident that can be attributed to the presence of neighboring molecules. Data for C60 films are also presented which suggest the possibility of plasmon excitation as is observed in photoionization and electron energy loss data.

    Notes: A feeding trial with five crude protein levels (549, 513, 472, 445 and 399 g kg−1) was conducted to investigate the optimum protein level in diets of juvenile southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma). Budgets of nitrogen and energy were discussed. Fish (initial weight 32.9 ± 0.5 g fish−1, mean ± SD) were fed the experimental diets to satiation twice daily for 61 days. Protein levels affected specific growth rate in wet weight (SGRW) and protein (SGRP) significantly. SGRW and SGRP were highest at 512.5 g kg−1 protein level. SGRW was positively correlated to growth nitrogen (GN), growth energy (GE), nitrogen digestibility, energy digestibility, amount of digestible nitrogen and amount of digestible energy. Faecal nitrogen (FN) and faecal energy (FE) were affected significantly with trends contrary to SGRW. The nitrogen budget was described by the equation 100CN = 2.1FN + 34.4UN + 63.5GN (CN, nitrogen intake; UN, excretion nitrogen). The energy budget was 100IE = 4.04FE +3.32UE + 54.35GE + 38.30ME (IE, gross energy intake; UE, excretion energy; ME, metabolizable energy). The average proportion of GE and ME in assimilated energy (AE) was described by the equation 100AE = 58.65GE + 41.35ME.
