    Notes: Summary IDDM is associated with an increase in kidney size, which is due to cellular hypertrophy and progressive matrix accumulation within the glomerulus and throughout the tubulointerstitium. The present study addressed the potential role of cysteine and metalloproteinases in renal hypertrophy of short-term diabetes. Three weeks after induction of streptozotocin diabetes in rats, intraglomerular gelatinase activity (streptozotocin: 23±4 vs control: 44±3 mU/μg DNA) and cathepsin L + B activity (streptozotocin: 6.7±0.8 vs control: 9.3±0.7 U/μg DNA) were significantly decreased. Insulin treatment completely prevented the decline in glomerular proteinase activity (gelatinase: 37±6 mU/μg DNA; cathepsin L + B: 9.6±0.9 U/μg DNA). In isolated proximal tubules a similar pattern of enzyme activity could be observed. Three weeks of diabetes caused a significant decline in cathepsin L + B activity (streptozotocin: 28±2 vs control: 37±3 U/μg DNA). Insulin treatment again prevented the decline in these tubular proteinase activities. In parallel, kidney weight increased by 22% and glomerular protein/DNA ratio rose by 17% in untreated diabetic rats. Diabetic rats receiving insulin displayed a normal glomerular protein/DNA ratio and the kidney weight was increased by only 5%. These results show that renal hypertrophy of early diabetes is closely associated with a decline in both glomerular and tubular proteinase activity. Adequate insulin substitution prevented renal hypertrophy and the reduction in proteinase activity.

    Notes: Protoplasts of eight wild Linum species and 14 genotypes of flax, isolated from different parts of seedlings and from shoot apices, were regenerated to callus in medium V-KM (Binding and Nehls 1977). Plant regeneration was obtained in L. alpinum, L. amurense, L. hologynum, L. perenne, L. salsoloides and eight genotypes of L. usitatissimum on agar media B5 (Gamborg et al. 1968), B5C (Binding et al, 1981), MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) and MSC (MS with 5% coconut endosperm) containing 2.5μM 6-BA. An adventitious embryo was regenerated in L. alpinum. Callus differentiation like sponge parenchyma, was observed in protoplast-derived tissues of L. usitatissimum. Shoots organized roots under slightly divergent conditions in the different species.

    Notes: The corner cube mixers originally developed for the TEXT-U far-infrared interferometer were susceptible to damage by tokamak radiation. The source of the damage has been traced to intense ωpe bursts emitted by the tokamak during start-up. We have determined that this radiation was coupled into the detector through a small gap in the original design. An electromagnetic model has been used to calculate the electric-field distribution within the gap. Results are consistent with the expected power in a burst. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A configuration is described to measure the effect of the plasma produced by an arcjet thruster on a reflector antenna. The diagnostic consists of a small movable rf probe coupled to a Hewlett–Packard 8510 network analyzer. Because the perturbation is expected to be small (〈10° phase shift), wall reflections are an important consideration. To minimize their effect we use Fourier transform gating techniques.

    Notes: We have studied the microhardness of undoped and dopant modified YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting ceramics as a function of load and dopant concentration using the Vickers indentation technique. In the undoped composition, the hardness value increased monotonically with decreasing load. We concluded that the higher hardness values, measured at lower loads, represent the hardness of single-crystalline grains. The higher loads [∼100–200 gf (1–2 N)] usually resulted in complex crack patterns and extensive crack propagation along the grain boundaries. With Zn or Li as the substitutional dopant in the Cu site, the hardness increased linearly with the dopant concentration up to 10% of dopant to Cu ratio at a load of 25 gf (0.25 N). Our data can be modeled by a solute solution strengthening mechanism.
