    Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: Peptides derived from neutrophil inhibitory factor (NIF), a known antagonist of Mac-1, were evaluated as inhibitors of neutrophil adherence.¶Material: In vitro assays of adherence employed: 1) human polymorphonuclear cells (PMN), 2) human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and 3) CHO cells expressing ICAM-1 (CHO-ICAM cells).¶Treatment: Cells, pretreated with NIF-derived peptides (0.1–100 μM) for 10 minutes, were permitted to adhere for 20 min in the continued presence of peptide.¶Methods: Cell-based assays: 1) PMN adherence to HUVEC, 2) PMN adhesion to immobilized human serum proteins, and 3) adherence of CHO-ICAM cells to immobilized Mac-1.¶Results: A NIF-derived peptide of 29 amino acids blocked PMN adherence to HUVEC, but behaved somewhat differently than the parent NIF protein. NIF specifically antagonized Mac-1 dependent adherence, but the peptide blocked neutrophil adherence that was dependent upon both Mac-1 and LFA-1 integrins. CHO-ICAM adherence to Mac-1 was blocked by NIF, but not by the peptide. Binding studies with NIF and the peptide indicate that the molecules bind to different sites.¶Conclusions: A peptide derived from NIF blocks PMN adherence but, unlike NIF, the mechanism of action is not mediated by direct antagonism Mac-1.

    Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the warm-air box method on the arterialization of venous blood during euglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. Six healthy male volunteers were studied using an i.v. infusion of insulin (144 mU·kg−1·h−1). Arterial blood glucose was clamped at the baseline level for the first 30 min and subsequently reduced to 3.2 and to 2.5 mmol/l for 20 min. At each stage, including prior to insulin infusion, arterial, arterialized venous (heating the hand in a warm-air box set to 55–60°C), venous and capillary blood samples were taken simultaneously for analyses of blood glucose and oxygen saturation (not for capillary blood). The oxygen saturations in arterialized blood were approximately 3% below the arterial values. The arterial-arterialized difference of blood glucose was about 0.1 mmol/l (the 95% confidence interval: from −0.19 to 0.41 mmol/l), which tended to correlate with the difference in oxygen saturations between the arterial and arterialized blood samples (r=0.25, p=0.08). During the test the forearm venous blood oxygen saturation increased by 9% and the arteriovenous difference in blood glucose ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 mmol/l which correlated significantly with the difference in oxygen saturations (r=0.48, p〈0.001). Capillary glucose was similar to the arterialized value. Rectal temperature was stable during the experiment. We conclude that the heated hand technique using the warm-air box sufficiently arterializes venous blood so that the glucose measurement in the arterialized blood provides a reasonable estimate of the arterial value and that the venous blood from the contralateral forearm is also markedly arterialized, probably reflecting a vasodilator effect of heating.

    Notes: Abstract Although malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a common sarcoma of late adulthood, it has rarely been reported to involve the pancreas. We describe the clinical and imaging features of a 27-year-old patient presenting with a predominantly cystic MFH. The cystic appearance of the lesion corresponded histologically to necrosis and hemorrhage within the mass.

    Notes: Abstract Anion-selective channels from apical membranes of cultured CFPAC-1 cells were isolated and incorporated into giant liposomes for patch clamp recording. Liposomes were formed from L-α-lecithin by a dehydration-hydration method. Ion channels were characterized using the excised inside-out patch clamp configuration. The most commonly observed anion channels were similar to those observed in native epithelial tissues. The linear 20 pS Cl channel had the halide permeability sequence Cl− 〉 I− ≥ Br− 〉 F−, and showed anomalous mole-fraction behavior in solutions containing different proportions of Cl− and F−, ions. The autwardly rectifying Cl− channel had the halide permeability sequence I− 〉 Br− 〉 Cl− 〉 F−, and also showed anomalous molefraction behavior, indicating that both these channels probably contain multi-ion pores. The third, voltage-dependent anion channel showed at least five different substrates, had a conductance of 390 pS in the main state, and showed two types of kinetics, fast (openings and closings 〈 1 ms), and slow (openings and closings 〉 1 s). The channel was seen more frequently after reconstitution into giant liposomes than in intact cells. It was not selective amongst the halides, and there was no deviation from a linear dependence of relative current on molar fractions, indicating relatively simple permeation through the pore. Differences in halide permeabilities suggest that different anion channels may be related to different membrane proteins. Comparison with the chloride channel proteins isolated biochemically from epithelial cell membranes is discussed.

Si è ottenuta una stima numerica del valore di massimo accrescimento come suggerimento per stabilire la velocità di spostamento del riscaldatore nell'esperimento pratico.
    Abstract: Резюме Проводится теоретический анализ кинетики выращивания кристалла CuInS2, используя метод перемещающегося нагревателя. Развивается схема вычисления градиента температуры в любой точке внутри системы. Получается численная оценка максимальной скорости роста для установления скорости перемещения нагревателя в практическом эксперименте.
    Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis has been carried out to investigate the kinetics involved in the CuInS2 crystal growth by the travelling-heater method. A numerical scheme is developed to compute the temperature gradient at any point inside the system. A numeric estimate of the maximum growth rate was obtained as a suggestion for setting the travelling speed of the heater in the practical experiment.
