Notes: Abstract Cyclic AMP-activated chloride fluxes have been analyzed in HT29-18-C1 cells (a clonal cell line derived from a human colon carcinoma) using measurements of cell volume (electronic cell sizing), cell chloride content (chloride titrator) and intracellular chloride activity (6-methoxy-N-(3-sulfopropyl)quinolinium; SPQ). HT29-18-C1 was shown to mediate polarized chloride transport. In unstimulated cells, the apical membrane was impermeable to chloride and net chloride flux was mediated by basolateral furosemide-sensitive transport. Forskolin (10) (μm) increased furosemideinsensitive chloride permeability of the apical membrane, and decreased steady-state intracellular chloride concentration approximately 9%. Cellular chloride depletion (substitution of medium chloride by nitrate or gluconate), caused greater than fourfold reduction in cellular chloride concentration. When chloride-depleted cells were returned to normal medium, cells regained chloride and osmolytes via bumetanide-sensitive transport, but forskolin did not stimulate bumetanideinsensitive chloride uptake. The inhibition of cAMP-activated chloride reuptake was not explained by limiting cation conductance, cell shrinkage, choice of substitute anion, or decreased generation of cAMP in chloridedepleted cells. When cells with normal chloride content were depolarized (135 mm medium potassium + 10 μm valinomycin), cAMP activated electrogenic chloride uptake permselective for Cl−≈Br−〉NO 3 − 〉I−. The electrogenic transport pathway was inhibited in chloridedepleted cells. Results suggest that chloride depletion limits activation of electrogenic chloride flux.

Notes: Summary We have investigated the ground state of a single hole in the half-filled Hubbard model on a 2D square lattice using the coupled-cluster method. In particular we obtained an analytical expression of the hole energy dispersion function ɛ(k) which is consistent with earlier studies on thet-J model in the strong-coupling limit. An appreciable discrepancy on the hole energy bandwidth is, however, observed between the Hubbard model and thet-J model. We believe that this discrepancy is due to the absence of the three-site interaction term in thet-J model.

Notes: Summary In this paper we have applied the method of connected-moments expansion to investigate the ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model for both the linear chain and the square lattice. The CMX series appear very unstable and give rather poor estimates of the ground-state energies. This seems to suggest that it does not provide a useful method for estimating ground-state energies of this model.

Notes: Summary In the present work we have applied the correlated squeezed-state approach to investigate the ground state of the extended Hubbard model which is coupled to local Holstein phonons. Our study begins with decoupling the electron and phonon subsystems approximately by introducing a variational correlated squeezed-state ansatz for the phonons. Then assuming the renormalized intersite electron correlation of the effective electronic Hamiltonian to be attractive and the renormalized on-site correlation repulsive, we have applied the generalized Hartree-Fock approximation to obtain the ground state of the system, which is a superconducting state with intersite pairing. With optimal values of the variational parameters the correlated squeezed-state approach will by construction yield a ground-state energy lower than those obtained in previous studies. This means that our variational ansatz is more stable as the ground state of the system. Furthermore, our variational study shows that in the correlated squeezed state the polaronic reduction effect of phonons is much more alleviated, and thus the mass enhancement inherent to the polaron effect is noticeably weakened. This weakening of the reduction effect should, in turn, significantly affect other physical properties of the system.

Notes: Summary In the present work we have constructed the orthonormal complete set of spatially extended magnetic Block functions in the subspace of the lowest landau level which can be uniquely represented by the Hilbert space of entire functions,i.e. the Fock-Bargman space, and discussed its application to the problem of fractional quantum Hall effect.

Notes: Summary In this paper we investigate the time evolution of a general driven time-dependent oscillator using the evolution operator method developed by Chenget al. We obtain an exact form of the time evolution operator which, in turn, enables us to find the exact wave functions and coherent states at any timet. Our analyses indicate that the time-dependent coherent state is equivalent to the well-known squeezed state, while the time-dependent number state is equivalent to the displaced and squeezed number state. Besides, we also calculate the time-dependent transition probabilities among the coherent states and number states of a simple harmonic oscillator associated with the initial HamiltonianH(0).

Notes: Using the coupled-cluster method we investigate the ground-state properties of an easy-plane spin-one antiferromagnet which has a critical point at zero temperature. This spin system represents a nontrivial system with the single-ion anisotropy. Single-ion anisotropies have a fundamental influence on the behavior of a magnetic system, and prevail in almost all physical systems with spin greater than one half. Because of the complexities caused by the single-ion anisotropy term, the mean-field approximation is commonly used in calculations of the thermodynamic quantities. However, in the mean-field approximation both quantum and spin fluctuation correlations have been neglected. Here we apply the coupled-cluster method to obtain the ground-state energy, staggered magnetization and critical point for both two and three dimensional lattices. In the coupled-cluster method the correlations of the quantum and spin fluctuations have been systematically included.

Notes: Adult Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica Temminck & Schlegel, (200–250 g, 45–55 cm) were immunized by intramuscular injection with goat IgG. After 5 weeks, eel immunoglobulin (Ig) was purified using affinity chromatography. The purified eel Ig was used to immunize rabbits to produce anti-eel Ig antibody. The highest antibody ELISA value in eels was reached 3 weeks after initial immunization with goat IgG, and then gradually decreased. The antibody could still be detected at 140 days post-immunization. The optimal temperature for antibody production was 30°C. Freund’s complete adjuvant and secondary immunization both increased antibody production in eels.
