Notes: Abstract. The mechanisms that generate the immense complexity of synaptic connections within the developing nervous system have fascinated biologists for decades. Analysis of nervous system development in simple systems, such as insects, has made a major contribution to our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that control the formation of axon pathways and precise connections. This enterprise has a long, interesting, and somewhat controversial history. This collection of reviews on axon guidance in insects provides a brief update to integrate current molecular and developmental insights in a number of areas from initial axon pathfinding to the recognition of synaptic partners.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The most important effects resulting from the switching performance of a power-MOSFET in a circuit are described. For that purpose the current- and voltage waveforms are discussed at first neglecting the parasitic circuit- and device parameters. Next the influence of these parameters on the switching performance during ON- and OFF-state are considered. The special developed computer program enables a parametric study of the switching performance and evaluates the most important electrical parameters for calculating the output- and driving circuit. For this purpose the power FET has been replaced by an suitable equivalent circuit. This circuit consists of only components with datasheet values. Finally the agreement between experimental and computer results are discussed. Application considerations dealing with the dynamic behaviour are given.

Notes: Abstract Culture parameters influencing metabolism of synthetic14C-lignins to14CO2 in defined media have been studied in shallow batch cultures of the ligninolytic wood-destroying HymenomycetePhanerochaete chrysosporium Burds. Study of the effect of O2 concentration in the gas phase above non-agitated cultures indicated essentially complete absence of attack on the lignin polymer at 5% O2 in N2, and a 2- to 3-fold enhancement by 100% O2 as compared to air (21% O2). Agitation of the cultures resulting in the formation of mycelial pellets greatly suppressed lignin decomposition. The optimum culture pH for lignin decomposition was 4 to 4.5, with marked suppression above 5.5 and below 3.5. The source of nutrient nitrogen (NO 3 − , NH 4 + , amino acids) had little influence on lignin decomposition, but the concentration of nitrogen was critical; decomposition at 24 mM was only 25–35% of that at 2.4 mM N. Thiamine was the only vitamin required for growth and lignin decomposition. Under the optimum conditions developed, decomposition of 5 mg of synthetic lignin was accompanied by utilization of approximately 100 mg of glucose. The influence of the various culture parameters was analogous for metabolism of synthetic lignin labeled in the ring-,side chain-, and methoxyl carbon atoms.

Notes: [Auszug] In the course of a recent investigation1, it was observed that the dextran recovered from the urine of patients transfused with dextran had a lower intrinsic viscosity, and hence a lower average molecular weight, than that of the dextran which had been given intravenously. One case received a ...

Notes: Summary Samples of non-decayed birch wood and samples decayed to weight losses of 21, 44, and 67% by Coriolus versicolor were subjected to acidolysis (4h reflux in dioxane-water, 9:1 by volume, containing 0.2 M HCl). The yields of the two major products, 3-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propanone (ketol I) and 3-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-propanone (ketol II), as a percentage of residual lignins, decreased progressively with increasing decay. Even so, substantial yields of I and II were obtained from the decayed wood, suggesting that during decay a considerable amount of the lignin remaining in the wood was as yet unaltered (e. g. ∼50% at a 67% weight loss). This result indicates that lignin is degraded from exposed surfaces; the decreasing yields of I and II with decay show that the surfaces become progressively larger. The more rapid decrease in the yield of ketol II than in the yield of ketol I indicates that syringyl elements were degraded more rapidly than guaiacyl elements. The fungal enzymes, acting progressively from the lumen surfaces toward the middle lamella, encountered syringylrich lignin first.
