Notes: Summary Blood viscosity (shear rates 100s-1 and 0.94 s-1) and several of its major determinants (haematocrit, plasma fibrinogen and plasma viscosity) have been measured in 38 male insulin-treated diabetics, aged 18–50 years, and in 38 non-diabetic control subjects matched for age and smoking habit. Diabetics without fundoscopic retinopathy (n=20) had higher mean blood viscosity than controls at the high shear rate (7.07 cP vs 6.75 cP, p〈0.05) and the low shear rate (21.2 cP vs 18.7 cP, p〈0.025). These differences persisted after correction of blood viscosity to a standard haematocrit, and were associated with increased plasma viscosity (1.41 cP vs 1.34 cP, p〈0.025) and plasma fibrinogen (2.9 g/L vs. 2.5 g/L, p〈0.025). Diabetics with retinopathy (n=18) had higher mean blood viscosity than diabetics without retinopathy at the high shear rate (7.53 cP vs 7.07 cP, p〈0.05) and the low shear rate (24.3 cP vs. 21.2 cP, p〈0.05), associated with a higher haematocrit (p〈0.05). Blood viscosity and haematocrit correlated with the duration of diabetes (r〉0.32, p〈0.05).

Notes: [Auszug] Woodworth, Tan and Virkaitis2 suggest, however, that the intermediate isoelectric fraction represents a dimer composed of one molecule each of metal-free protein and iron-saturated protein. According to their interpretation of gel filtration experiments the intermediate isoelectric fraction is a ...

Notes: The Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ (Engineered Medical Systems, Indianapolis, IN) is a new supraglottic airway designed for spontaneous and controlled ventilation. It is not yet commercially available in the UK. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ in a cohort study and in a randomised, controlled, crossover comparison study with the Classic Laryngeal Mask Airway™. After studying 29 patients, both studies were suspended and later stopped after two cases of significant pulmonary aspiration had occurred in patients whilst using the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™. These cases raised concern about both the design and the safety of the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™, particularly during controlled ventilation. We suggest that the Cobra Perilaryngeal Airway™ should not be marketed for controlled ventilation until more safety data are available.

Notes: Abstract Telephone calls were made to 1251 consecutive patients one day following outpatient myelography. Data were available on 518 patients punctured with 22-gauge (g) (large-diameter) and 465 with 25-g (small-diameter) spinal needles. We surveyed 48 academic and private practice groups regarding needle diameter use in myelography; data were obtained from 34 private practice and 14 academic radiology departments. Patients reported adverse effects including mild and severe headache, back pain and nausea. The percentage of total adverse effects was significantly greater in the 22-g than in the 25-g needle group. The percentage of patients with headache was higher in the 22-g than in the 25-g group, but this difference was not statistically significant. Only 19 % of private practice groups and 17 % of academic centers use 25-g needles; the remainder use 20-g or 22-g needles.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to develop a system for producing transformed plants from explants ofDendranthema grandiflora, the susceptibility of the cultivar Super White to various wild-type strains ofAgrobacterium tumefaciens andA. rhizogenes was investigated. Tumour formation was not a reliable indicator of the ability of a related disarmed strain to mediate transformation. Following inoculation of explants with disarmedAgrobacterium strains, a number of shoots developed on selective media. However, none of these shoots were transformed. By co-cultivating stem internode explants with a mixed inoculum of wild-type and disarmed strains, it was possible to obtain a callus stably transformed withAgrobacterium carrying a disarmed T-DNA. Histological analysis of explants revealed that shoot regeneration initially occurred from the cells of the epidermis and subsequently from the cortex. However, the cells which were susceptible to T-DNA transfer were confined to the vascular tissue.
