Notes: THF polymerization initiated by substituted 1,3-dioxolan-2-ylium salts was investigated. It was found that the rate of monomer consumption depends both on the cation and anion nature. The number, kind and configuration of the substituents of the dioxolenium cations determine their reactivity in the initiation process, hence they influence the catalytic activity of the salts, while the influence of the anion nature on the course of the polymerization is due to the reaction within macroion pairs.

Notes: The cationic polymerization of 2-vinyl-4.5-dimethyl-1.3-dioxolane (VDMD) with BF3·Et2O, SnCl4, TiCl4, and various cocatalysts was investigated, and probable reaction mechanisms were proposed. Linear oily products of low molecular weight have been obtained. In contrast, the unsubstituted 2-vinyl-1.3-dioxolane forms cross-linked polymers. Methylene substituents in positions 4 and 5 in acetal rings make it less reactive. Crosslinked polymers from VDMD were also obtained, when epichlorohydrine was used as cocatalyst. These cross-linked products contain halogen. This shows the possibility of copolymerization of epichlorohydrine and VDMD beside a cocatalytic effect.

Notes: The influence of the number and the kind of substituents as well as their configuration on the reactivity of substituted 1,3-dioxolan-2-ylium cations was estimated by investigating their reactions with some nucleophiles and the polymerization of dioxolane and dioxepane initiated by salts of these cations. The differences in reactivity observed are discussed with respect to steric hindrance and the distribution of positive charges in the cations.
