    Notes: Abstract Uptake of 233Pa from sea water by mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L. and shore crabs Carcinus mediterraneus Csrn. was studied. Results indicate a high contamination factor in digestive tract, gills and skeleton of both investigated species and an increment of the contamination factor in mussel byssus. In spite of this, reproductive system, muscle and hemolymph were only negligibly contaminated. The presence of complexone EDTA in sea water has no effect on uptake of 233Pa in the animal tissues tested.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of137Cs through soil layers has been investigated by field sampling. The investigation deals with137Cs concentration found after the Chernobyl accident. The relationship between important soil characteristics, total precipitation and cesium distribution are analyzed. Cesium is strongly sorbed in the top soil layer and its migration downward is limited. Measurements performed over a 3-year period revealed that approximately 20–38 per cent of total137Cs is located in the upper soil layer.

    Notes: Abstract The formation and evolution of a large amplitude MHD perturbation propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field in a perfectly conducting low β plasma is studied. The perturbation is generated by an abrupt expansion of the source region. Explicit expressions for the time and the distance needed for the transformation of the perturbation's leading edge into a shock wave are derived. The results are applied to coronal conditions and the dynamic spectra of the radio emission excited by the shock are synthesized, reproducing metric and kilometric type II bursts. The features corresponding to the metric type II burst precursor and the moving type IV burst in the case of kilometric type II bursts are identified. A specific radio signature that is sometimes observed at the onset of a metric type II burst is found to appear immediately before the shock wave formation due to the associated growth of the magnetic field gradient. Time delays and starting frequencies of bursts' onsets are calculated and presented as a function of the impulsiveness of the source-region expansion, using different values of the ambient Alfvén velocity and various time profiles of the expansion velocity. The results are confronted with the observations of metric and kilometric type II solar radio bursts.

    Notes: Abstract The ignition of coronal shock waves by flares is investigated. It is assumed that an explosive expansion of the source region caused by impulsive heating generates a fast-mode MHD blast wave which subsequently transforms into a shock wave. The solutions of 1-D MHD equations for the flaring region and for the external region are matched at their boundary. The obtained results show under what conditions flares can ignite shock waves that excite the metric type II bursts. The heat input rate per unit mass has to be sufficiently high and the preflare value of the plasma parameter β in the flaring region has to be larger than β0 crit. The critical values depend on the flare dimensions and impulsiveness. Larger and more impulsive flares are more effective in generating type II bursts. Shock waves of a higher Mach number require a higher preflare value of β and a more powerful heating per unit mass. The results demonstrate why only a small fraction of flares is associated with type II bursts and why the association rate increases with the flare importance.

    Notes: Abstract A new procedure for isolation and determination of90Sr in real natural samples is presented. It consists of bringing natural samples in a soluble form suitable for separation on an ion-exchange column, separation of calcium from strontium by means of the anion exchanger Amberlite CG-400 and 0.25M HNO3 in methanol as eluent for calcium, and the determination of90Sr using a low level β-counter after elution with H2O, scavenging steps and SrCO3 precipitation. The method was tested with IAEA standards of natural samples with known contents of90Sr, and water samples, where the concentration of90Sr was previously determined by the standard IAEA procedure. The results obtained show that it is possible to isolate and determine low levels of90Sr in natural samples. The procedure is favorable because of the simple separation of radioaactive strontium without using fuming nitric acid.

    Notes: Abstract Procedures for the separation and determination of90Sr in liquid samples, with cation and anion exchangers have been described. Strontium, yttrium and other cations bind to the cation exchanger and are eluted from the column by means of nitric acid. Separation of yttrium and strontium from other cations is carried out on columns filled with strong base anion exchangers in nitrate form with alcoholic solutions of nitric acid. This separation method enables the determination of90Sr through yttrium on a low-level gas flow α, β-counter, as well as through strontium on a lowlevel liquid scintillation counter by means of Cherenkov counting. Such procedures have been tested by the determination of90Sr in water, wine, medium radioactive liquid waste samples, milk and clover samples. For comparison, the determination has also been carried out by the standard method. It has been showed that the developed procedures might produce a high efficiency in strontium separation and a satisfactory accuracy of determination.

    Notes: Abstract A possibility of mutual separation of calcium and strontium on an anion-exchange column has been studied and then used in working out methods of separation of radioactive strontium from natural samples. All examinations, carried out on model systems, showed that calcium could be completely separated from strontium on the column with the anion exchanger Amberlite CG-400 using 0.25M HNO3 in methanol as eluent. The flow velocity of this eluent in the range between 1 ml/min and 5 ml/min did not influence the efficiency of separation of calcium from strontium. The increase of the concentration of nitric acid in methanol reduced the efficiency of their mutual separation and the increase of exchanger column height neutralized the influence of the increase of acid concentration. Calcium was separated from strontium in the mass concentration ratio γ(Ca2+)/γ(Sr2+) in the range between 1∶1 to 100∶1. This separation procedure may be used for the isolation of radioactive strontium from real samples instead of using fuming nitric acid.

    Notes: Abstract A procedure for semi-automatic isolation and determination of radioactive strontium from natural samples was developed. The method was tested by the determination of90Sr in soil samples and the results obtained were compared to those obtained by the standard procedure. The procedure consists of leaching of strontium (and other cations as well) from soil samples with a water suspension of the cation exchanger Amberlite IR-20, the separation of strontium from other cations, e.g., potassium, calcium, sodium, barium by the anion exchangers Amberlite CG-400 or Dowex Ag 1×8 with 0.25M HNO3 in ethanol-methanol mixture as eluent in the apparatus specially constructed for this purpose. Determination of90Sr was done on the low-level gas-flow β-counter and by Cherenkow counting on the liquid-scintillation counter few hours after the separation. It was shown that this procedure might be successfully applied for rapid determination of90Sr in soil samples and other natural samples in a timesaving manner.
