Notes: This study examines the defence documents of 79 hostile take-over bids of publicly quoted companies in the UK during the period 1988–1990 using logit regression and discriminant analysis to determine if any of the 41 identified characteristics of the defence document and seven continuous control variables lead to a higher or lower probability of a successful defence. The study finds that managers in target companies are unable to introduce new information in their defence documents that materially affects the outcome of a bid. This suggests that managers may advise shareholders to reject a bid for other reasons, such as to drive up the offer price.

Notes: [Auszug] ONE group of rats was supplied with vitamin B carriers that had been subjected to intense ultraviolet irradiation. The animals developed a severe dermatitis and died. A second group received tikitiki, an alcoholic extract of rice polishings, as the sole source of vitamin B. After some ten or ...

Notes: Abstract The ability of a series of synthetic analogues of ω-conopeptides MVIIA (SNX-111) and TVIA (SNX-185) to prevent electrically-evoked norepinephrine release from rat tail artery and hippocampal slice preparations was determined in an effort to identify voltage-sensitive calcium channel (VSCC) blockers that selectively target N-type VSCCs in central nervous system tissue. Electrical field stimulation (3 Hz, 1 ms in duration, 80 V for 1 min) caused a high and consistent tritium outflow from rat tail artery and hippocampal slice preparations preloaded with [3H]-norepinephrine. All conopeptides, chosen for their selective affinities for high-affinity SNX-111 binding sites (i.e., N-type VSCCs) over high-affinity ω-conopeptides MVIIC (SNX-230) binding sites (i.e., P/Q-type VSCCs), produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of calcium dependent electrically-evoked tritium outflow from both tail arteries and hippocampal slices; IC50s ranged from 1.2 nM to 1.2 μM. Blocking potencies (IC50s) in the tail artery assay were significantly correlated with those measured in the hippocampal slice preparation (r = 0.91, P = 0.00000012). There was a significant correlation between IC50s for blockade of hippocampal norepinephrine release and the inhibition of high-affinity [125I]-SNX-111 binding in rat brain synaptosomes (r = 0.76, P = 0.00028). Blockade of hippocampal norepinephrine release was not significantly correlated with the inhibition of high-affinity SNX-230 binding (r = 0.46, P = 0.056). Maximum inhibition of tritium outflow in the tail artery assay was 22 ± 1.4% of control, approximating the value (20.9 ± 16.0% of control) obtained in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. In contrast, the maximum inhibition of tritium release from hippocampal slices was 36.8 ± 2.5% of control (P 〈 0.05, compared to that of the tail artery assay). These results suggest that (1) N-type VSCCs alone mediate low frequency electrical stimulation-evoked neurotransmitter release from peripheral sympathetic efferents (tail artery) while both N-type and non-N type(s) mediate neurotransmitter release from CNS neurons (hippocampus); and (2) analogues of ω-conopeptides MVIIA and TVIA do not differentiate between N-type VSCCs mediating norepinephrine release from central and peripheral neural tissues.

Notes: Abstract Thirty-six malignant polyps were identified that met the following criteria: well-differentiated adenocarcinoma and complete excision endoscopically. Location, type, size, distance of the cancer to the cautery mark, and lymphovascular involvement were analyzed to determine if they affected findings at surgery or risk of recurrent cancer. There were 20 patients and 21 polyps in the nonsurgical group, and 15 patients and polyps in the surgical group. One patient from each group had residual cancer after endoscopic removal of the polyp. The only factor that had an adverse effect on outcome was the distance of the cancer to the cautery mark (〈1 mm). Although rectal location was associated with the residual cancer, poor prognosis could have been predicted by the inadequate margins. This long-term follow-up (65 months average) study supports previous observations that an adequate margin is the most important factor in predicting the prognosis of endoscopically resected colorectal adenomas containing well-differentiated adenocarcinomas.

Notes: Abstract We reviewed colorectal biopsies and clinical records from 36 patients with chronic watery diarrhea who had been diagnosed as having microscopic colitis and compared their histologic features with the more detailed and precise criteria for lymphocytic colitis. Published pathologic criteria for lymphocytic colitis were applied to the biopsies and compared. Focal or diffuse nature of the lymphoid infiltrate were noted separately. The focal lymphoid infiltrate was related to lymphoid aggregates in the lamina propria of the mucosa. Eighteen cases had focal lymphoid cell infiltration, and 16 of them had associated diverticula, polyps, or both. Eighteen cases had diffuse lymphoid cell infiltration, and six of them had diverticula or polyps. Results indicate that focal cellular infiltration strongly predicts associated diverticula or polyps. The group with no diverticula or polyps most closely conformed to histologic criteria for lymphocytic colitis (Kruskal-WallisP〈0.02). We conclude that lymphocytic colitis comprises a well-defined group of cases within the large and less-defined group of microscopic colitis.

Notes: Abstract The plastic deformation of a commercial grade low carbon steel has been investigated using microhardness and grain strain measurement techniques. Two distinct modes of deformation during plastic flow in low carbon ferritic steel have been identified. The initial stage involves the propagation of the Luder's band along the gauge length of the sample by slip strain in the surface and near surface grains only, the strain accommodation in the interior of the material being attained by a predominantly grain translation mode. The second stage involves the propagation of a strain hardening front through the cross-section of the material as the macro-strain is increased through the flow stress region.
