    Notes: Summary Peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique was selected for visualizing the binding of peanut lectin (PNL) to the most frequent human brain tumors. The randomly selected material included neoplasms of neuroectodermal and mesenchymal origin. We employed 1–5 μm sections of routinely processed and paraffin-embedded tissues. PNL receptors were detected to a variable extent on the cell surface of astrocytoma, glioblastoma multiforme, oligodendroglioma, ependymoma, meningotheliomatous meningeoma, and plexus papilloma. In gliomas an increase in malignancy seems to be associated with a decrease in PNL binding. Except for the plexus papillomas, neuraminidase pretreatment had neither a qualitative nor a quantitative influence on the binding behavior of PNL. Intracellular PNL receptors could be detected in “granular cells” and in the perinuclear region of malignant gliomas.

    Notes: Summary A 67-year-old woman suffering since 5 years from a so far nontreated B-CLL underwent hemithyroidectomy for a rapidly enlarging tumor. Histologically, the coincidence of a centroblastic lymphoma and thyroidal infiltration by the CLL was diagnosed. Immunohistology revealed typical immunoprofils for both, B-CLL and centroblastic lymphoma on the background of B cell differentiation antigens. The bitypical immunoglobulin light chain expression — λ on the B-CLL cells and κ on the centroblasts — suggested biclonality. This was confirmed by gene rearrangement analysis of peripheral leukemia cells and tumor tissue. Thus, the final diagnosis of a primary thyroidal lymphoma of the centroblastic type (stage IE) arising independently from a preexisting B-CLL was achieved. Consequently, the patient received local radiotherapy. In our opinion, the designation “Richter's Syndrome”, readily applied in the literature, is inappropriate for this tumor constellation.

    Notes: Summary The condition of true thymic hyperplasia is defined as an increase of both size and weight of the gland while it maintains normal microscopic architecture. It occurs in three different clinicopathologic forms: (1) True thymic hyperplasia without any other disease is extremely rare and only seven well documented examples could be found in a review of the literature. (2) Enlargement of the thymus gland is reported as a form of rebound phenomenon in a number of conditions like recovery from severe stress situations, after administration of steroids, and after treatment of malignant tumors. (3) Finally, thymic hyperplasia has been described in association with endocrine abnormalities, sarcoidosis, and Beckwith-Wiedeman syndrome.

    Notes: Summary The so-called lymphofollicular hyperplasia, which is caused by the occurrence of hyperplastic lymph follicles within the organ, is constantly associated with autoimmune diseases (e.g., myasthenia gravis) and in rare instances with malignant tumors. The architecture of lymphofollicular hyperplasia was studied immunohistochemically using antibodies against epithelial, vascular, lymphocytic, and histiocytic antigens. There is evidence, that the configuration, microtopography, cellular composition, and immunohistological findings of the lymph follicles with germinal centers in the myasthenic thymus are essentially the same as in those occurring in lymph nodes and in other lymphatic tissue. Furthermore it could be shown that the follicles originate in the interlobular septal space and displace the thymic parenchyma by extension.

    Notes: Abstract To divulge plausible source for fluorine in the Upper Ladinian of the East Alpine geosyncline, two totally independent geochemical approaches have been made. They are (i) correlation study of the stratabound, stratiform, paleographic and regional fluorine anomalies observed in seven selected profiles of the carbonate sequences and (ii) comparative study of the distribution of rare earths (REE) in fluorspars from northern and southern Ladinian sequences. The fluorine anomalies in the entire East Alpine geosyncline were found to be confined only to a few horizons which could be stratigraphically correlated. The fluorspars of the Nördliche Kalkalpen showed REE distribution characteristic of a sedimentary formation while those of the Südliche Kalkalpen (Bleiberg area) apparently showed a hydrothermal type of REE distribution. These and various other considerations discussed in the present paper go to show that a relatively short-termed submarine exhalative source (volcanic) of a recurring nature in the Ladinian stage of the Mid-Triassic might have been plausibly responsible for the supply of fluorine found in the carbonate sequences of the East Alpine geosynclines. The noted stratigraphic correlation of fluorine anomalies suggested, in addition, that fluorine bearing layers could be used as temporaneous marker beds. An interesting side observation was that of the bi-to tri-modal fluorine distribution in four profiles which represented well mineralized areas in contrast to the unimodal fluorine distribution in the rest three profiles with no distinct zone of mineralization. Probably such a multimodal distribution of fluorine may be characteristic of the Pb-Zn deposits (or other ore bearing-units) in paragenesis, granted which, it may find application as proximity indicators of ore deposits.

    Notes: Abstract In galvanic cell arrangements gold is electrochemically deposited on semiconducting sulfide minerals (pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite) from aerated as well as H2S-saturated, gold-bearing 1 M KCl solutions. Observed cell potential differences of about 0.4–0.6 V in setups with one sulfide in aerated (cathode) and the other in H2S-saturated (anode) solutions are comparable with known “self-potentials” of natural sulfide ore bodies. Gold preferentially accumulates on the cathode, i.e. under oxidizing conditions. Linked sulfides of variable composition in the same environment, either oxidizing or reducing, yield potential differences up to 20 mV. Such assemblages simulate conditions typically occurring at surfaces of chemically inhomogeneous single crystals (e.g. zonation). Depending on chemical composition, sulfide minerals show either n- or p-type conductivity. Visible gold is preferentially accumulated on individual domains of sulfide surfaces that act as cathodes, i.e. p-type conductors in n-p junctions. The experimental results are discussed in view of electrochemical accumulation of visible gold on sulfides in nature. Arsenic is the most important element in establishing p-type conductivity of pyrite and arsenopyrite. This feature may explain why As is such a powerful pathfinder in gold exploration.

    Notes: Abstract A comprehensive review of the authors' and their co-workers' results on the fractionation of Rare Earth Elements (REE) during the crystallization and/or recrystallization of Fluorspar is given. The fractionation can be explained as the result of REE complexation in the ore forming solution and systematic changes in distribution coefficients of REE. It is shown that the Tb/Ca and Tb/La ratios are sufficient to characterize pegmatitic (pneumatolytic), hydrothermal and sedimentary fluorspar. This has been confirmed by numerous investigations on various types of deposits.

    Notes: Abstract. This is a report of clinical, CT and MRI findings in a patient with toxic spongiform leucoencephalopathy after heroin ingestion. The disease is observed in drug addicts who inhale pre-heated heroin. The clinical onset, which usually occurs some days or even longer after the last heroin consumption, is characterized by a cerebellar syndrome. The cerebellar hemispheres, the cerebellar and cerebral peduncles and the pyramidal tract may be affected. Spongiform demyelination is the morphological substrate of the lesions, which are not contrast enhancing, hypodense on CT and hyperintense on T2-weighted MRI. The frequently perfect symmetry of the affection of functional systems points to a toxic and/or metabolic pathophysiological mechanism.
