    Notes: Summary  Despite highest standards in nerve repair, functional recovery following nerve transection still remains unsatisfactory. Non-specific re-innervation of target organs are regarded as one reason for a poor functional outcome. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has demonstrated promoting effects on sciatic nerve regeneration after crushing injury. Similarly, IGF-1 has shown a direct inductive effect on motoneuron growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43) which is believed to play a role in axon guidance during development.  Based on this fact we have examined the trophic effects of recombinant human IGF-1 on peripheral motor nerve regeneration following transection and epineural repair in rats median nerve. RhIGF-1 (0.5 mg/kg/rat) was administered subcutaneously to the neck of the repaired side for 14 days postoperation. Accuracy of re-innervation of the flexor carpi radialis muscle motoneuron pool was studied by sequential retrograde double labelling technique. Motor recovery was tested with the grasping test. No significant differences between experimental and control animals in accuracy of re-innervation and in recovery of muscle power could be demonstrated. Non-specific re-innervation of the flexor carpi radialis muscle was found in 23.2% in the experimental group and in 24.2% in the control group. These results demonstrate that systemically applied rhIGF-1 failed to improve functional motor recovery after nerve transection and repair in the rat as it was demonstrated after nerve crushing injury in several studies. Furthermore, systemically applied IGF-1 did not improve accuracy of re-innervation after axotomy and repair in adult rats.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper case studies of propagation characteristics of two TIDs are presented which are induced by atmospheric gravity waves in the auroral F-region on a magnetic quiet day. By means of maximum entropy cross-spectral analysis of EISCAT CP2 data, apparent full wave-number vectors of the TIDs are obtained as a function of height. The analysis results show that the two events considered can be classified as moderately large-scale TID and medium-scale TID, respectively. One exhibits a dominant period of about 72 min, a mean horizontal phase speed of about 180 m/s (corresponding to a horizontal wavelength of about 780 km) directed south-eastwards and a vertical phase speed of 55 m/s for a height of about 300 km. The other example shows a dominant period of 44 min, a mean horizontal phase velocity of about 160 m/s (corresponding to a horizontal wavelength of about 420 km) directed southwestwards, and a vertical phase velocity of about 50 m/s at 250 km altitude.

    Notes: Summary The anterior cavernous sinus space is the venous space anterior to the cavernous carotid artery. It is tetrahedral in shape with the anterior apex at the superior orbital fissure. The superomedial wall is formed by the base of the anterior clinoid process. The inferomedial wall is formed by the sphenoid bone. The lateral wall consists of two layers of dura with the oculomotor, trochlear, ophthalmic and abducens nerves in the inner layer. Medially, the posterior wall consists of the cavernous carotid artery. Laterally, it communicates with the lateral cavernous sinus space. Paraclinoid and carotid cave aneurysms may occupy this space and its microanatomy is important in the surgery of these aneurysms.

    Notes: Summary Eight cases of stroke in children treated with surgery are reported. Four of the patients had Moya-moya disease and presented with TIA. They were treated by surgically creating collaterals through the STA-MCA bypass, encephalomyosyangiosis and encephalomyoarteriosynangiosis operations. Three patients with traumatic or idiopathic carotid artery stenosis or occlusion presented with TIA and were treated with STA-MCA bypass. One patient with idiopathic carotid artery stenosis presented with a complaint of a continuous swishing noise in the ear and had a STA-MCA bypass followed by carotid artery ligation. Although stroke in children is usually secondary to systemic disease, there is a group of children with surgically treatable disease who need to be identified and treated. The potential benefit of surgery may depend on the promptness with which a definitive diagnosis is reached.

    Notes: Abstract The high-latitude ionospheric response to a major magnetic storm on May 15, 1997 is studied and different responses in the polar cap and the auroral oval are highlighted. Depletion of the F2 region electron density occurred in both the polar cap and the auroral zone, but due to different physical processes. The increased recombination rate of O+ ions caused by a strong electric field played a crucial role in the auroral zone. The transport effect, however, especially the strong upward ion flow was also of great importance in the dayside polar cap. During the main phase and the beginning of the recovery phase soft particle precipitation in the polar cap showed a clear relation to the dynamic pressure of the solar wind, with a maximum cross-correlation coefficient of 0.63 at a time lag of 5 min.
