Abdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography, and venography disclosed that the venous congestion in this patient resulted from complex venous anomalies including azygos–hemiazygos continuation, absent superior hepatic veins, and retroaortic transposition of the left renal vein.

    Notes: Summary The blood-brain barrier breaks down following cerebral ischemia, but the exact sequence of events for extravasation of serum proteins and their parenchymal distribution remain uncertain. We studied the distribution of serum albumin in the hippocampus of the gerbil brain using light and electron microscopic immunocytochemical techniques. With light microscopy, there was no reaction for albumin for the first 12 h after unilateral common carotid artery occlusion for 10 min and reperfusion. At 12 h, the reaction was weak and limited to the neuropil in the subiculum-CA1 region (between the subiculum and the medial CA1 region). After 24 h, the reaction became intense in the neuropil and neuronal perikarya in the subiculum-CA1 and medial CA1 regions. The electron microscopic immunocytochemical study of the subiculum-CA1 and medial CA1 regions revealed electron-dense immunoprecipitates in the extracellular space and the peripheral part of the apical dendrites as early as 30 min after reperfusion and in the astrocytic cytoplasm after reperfusion for 1 h. However, immunoprecipitates were not found in the neuronal perikarya until after reperfusion for 24 h. The present study demonstrated prompt appearance of albumin in the extracellular space of the brain parenchyma after re-establishment of cerebral circulation and prompt accumulation in the peripheral part of the dendrites with spreading to neuronal perikarya, likely in the process of degeneration and death.

    Notes: Summary Cholecystokinin immunoreactive (CCKI) axons in the nucleus gracilis of the normal rat were studied by light and electron microscopy using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) immunocytochemical method. Immunoreactivity was found in both normal and dystrophic axons at various ages. Slightly enlarged CCKI varicosities were first observed in 2-month-old rats, gradually increased in number (max. at 21 months) and in diameter (up to 20 μm at 21 months), and then decreased (at 27 and 36 months). Dilatated CCKI fibers continuous with dystrophic varicosities also tended to increase proportionally in diameter. The dystrophic CCKI axonal profiles, first identified at the light-microscopic level and then observed under electron microscopy, had consistently characteristic features. In addition, numerous dystrophic nonreactive axonal profiles had morphological features differing from those of dystrophic reactive ones at advanced ages. These findings suggest that CCK may be partly involved in the formation of dystrophic axons in the nucleus gracilis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a fluorometric method for assaying deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity in natural seawater and sediment. DNase activity was detected in a sea-water sample taken from Tokyo Bay (Japan), and in various sediment samples taken from Suruga, Sagami and Tokyo Bays, and from Aburatsubo Inlet. Much more DNase occurred in seawater in a state bound to suspended particles or microbial cells than dissolved free in seawater. Although viable DNA-hydrolyzing bacteria were found to be widely distributed in seawater and sediment, poor correlation existed between the bacterial population and the intensity of DNase activity in the sediments examined. In addition, intensities of DNase activity in various surface sediments had no apparent correlation with the DNA contents and the sediment types. However, a close correspondence was found between the vertical variation of DNase activities and the gradient of DNA contents and of Eh in the core sediment at Aburatsubo Inlet.

    Notes: Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) concentrations, an indicator of bacterial biomass, were determined in the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The distribution patterns of LPS were compared with those of chlorophyll a (Chl a), zooplankton biomass and the concentrations of several nutrients. LPS and total bacterial numbers in seawater were correlated with each other with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.84 at Stations 7, 8 and 10. Diurnal fluctuation of LPS was negligible, but Chl a varied slightly in the vertical water column. Zooplankton stayed at a depth of around 400 m during the daytime and ascended quickly to the surface (0–50 m) early in the evening. The profiles of LPS and Chl a were negatively correlated to each other in the water layers above the Chl a maximum peak (r=-0.74; excluding the samples from 75 m at Station 7 and 10 m at Station 11 due to inadequate data for the statistical analysis). LPS and zooplankton biomass during the night-time, in contrast, paralleled each other at 5 stations surveyed (r=0.71). The presence of zooplankton resulted in an increase in bacterial numbers in the seawater in vitro. Based on these results, the factors controlling the occurrence and abundance of bacteria and phyto- and zooplankton in the pelagic sea are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of solid particles on the flow structure of a round air jet in a stagnant surrounding was investigated experimentally. Information on the averaged two-component velocities, the kinetic energies, and the u′ v′-properties were obtained for both phases by means of a monochromatic three beam laser Doppler anemometer. The particle number density was also measured by this system. Glass beads of 64 μm and 132 μm diameter were used for a constant mass loading ratio of 0.3 in a jet with a Reynolds number of 20 000. The lateral mean velocity and number density profiles were expressed by best fitting functions and several invariable coefficients were found. The standard drag force coefficient C D for a single particle was applicable for a dilute particle cloud even in a non-uniform air velocity field.

    Notes: Abstract Results of an investigation of 19 organic dyes pumped by a 1.7 MW discharge-pumped XeCl excimer laser are reported. The dye-laser emission covered a wide wavelength range from 340 nm to 710 nm.P-terphenyl shows efficient laser action. The highest energy conversion efficiency exceeds 40% in visible region. In comparison with 250 kW nitrogen laser pumping, higher efficiencies are obtained for most of these dyes in the same dye-laser configuration.

We described the influence of a type of gas and its pressure upon the size distribution of Si nanoparticles fabricated by laser ablation in an ambient gas and the plume dynamics during the synthesis. The plume dynamics was investigated by laser-induced fluorescence and ultraviolet Rayleigh scattering. Based on the results, the importance of the gas flow within the ablation plume in the formation of the nanoparticles is understood.
