    Notes: Rooted cuttings of Dendranthema grandiflorum cv. ‘Puja’ were treated with different doses of gamma rays. Sectorial somatic mutations both in flower colour and shape were detected in all the doses. The original floret colour of ‘Puja’ is red-purple and florets are flat spoon shaped. One of the mutant floret colour was yellow-orange with original flat florets and another mutant floret colour was yellow-orange with tubular florets. Original and mutated ray florets were cultured on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with sucrose and different combinations of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Direct shoot organogenesis was seen within 2 weeks of culture initiation. The best regeneration was obtained on medium supplemented with 1 mg/l BAP + 0.5 mg/l NAA. Shoots regenerated from all explant types were rooted in vitro and transferred to the field. Regenerated plants flowered true-to-explant floret colour and shape. The isolated yellow floret colour mutants and yellow floret colour mutants with tubular florets were maintained vegetatively and have proved to be true to type in two successive generations.

    Notes: Abstract The mating-system was investigated in a natural population of the tetraploid taxon Acacia nilotica ssp. leiocarpa using open-pollinated seeds from 15 families. Six-day-old germinated seeds were used for starch-gel electrophoresis. Three enzyme systems (ADH, EST-1, and 6PGD) were scored. Isozyme banding patterns and segregation of isozyme variants within families suggest that the species is an autotetraploid displaying tetrasomic inheritance. Estimates of single-locus (ts=0.358) and multilocus (tm=0.384) population outcrossing rates were homogeneous, and indicate substantial selfing in the population. Heterogeneity of outcrossing estimates among loci and families were marked, suggesting departure from the assumptions of the mixed-mating model. Implications of the result for the utilization of germplasm in tree-improvement programmes are noted.

    Notes: Abstract. Blastokinin or uteroglobin (UG) is a steroid-inducible, evolutionarily conserved, multifunctional protein secreted by the mucosal epithelia of virtually all mammals. It is present in the blood and in other body fluids including urine. An antigen immunoreactive to UG antibody is also detectable in the mucosal epithelia of all vertebrates. UG-binding proteins (putative receptor), expressed on several normal and cancer cell types, have been characterized. The human UG gene is mapped to chromosome 11q12.2 – 13.1, a region that is frequently rearranged or deleted in many cancers. The generation of UG knockout mice revealed that disruption of this gene causes: (i) severe renal disease due to an abnormal deposition of fibronectin and collagen in the glomeruli; (ii) predisposition to a high incidence of malignancies; and (iii) a lack of polychlorinated biphenyl binding and increased oxygen toxicity in the lungs. The mechanism(s) of UG action is likely to be even more complex as it also functions via a putative receptor-mediated pathway that has not yet been clearly defined. Molecular characterization of the UG receptor and signal transduction via this receptor pathway may show that this protein belongs to a novel cytokine/chemokine family.

    Notes: Summary Oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 commonly associated with cervical cancer are found in many epithelial malignancies at extra-genital sites including breast. The transforming gene products of HPV have also been shown to immortalize breast epithelial cellsin vitro. But the findings of HPV DNA in breast carcinoma are found to be contradictory. In the present study fine needle aspirate cell (FNAC) samples from 26 breast cancer patients and four breast tumour biopsies were analysed for the presence of HPV 16 and 18 DNA sequences by both polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot hybridization. Of 26 fine needle aspi rate cell samples and four breast cancer biopsies, not a single sample was found to be positive by either PCR or Southern blot hybridization. The observation of complete absence of HPV DNA sequences in breast cancer refute the possibility of any role for oncogenic genital HPV types 16 and 18 in the pathogenesis of breast cancer.

    Notes: Abstract Somatic embryos were induced directly on adaxial surface of cotyledonary leaves within 8–10 days of culture on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 5.37 to 10.74 μM 1 — napthaleneacetic acid and 2.22 μM benzyl adenine. Germinated embryos with shoot axes developed into complete plants after transfer onto half stength Murashige and Skoog medium containing 1.07 μM 1 — napthaleneacetic acid. Histological studies suggested direct origin of somatic embryos with broad-base attachment.

    Notes: Abstract The understanding of ‘pseudotumors’ has significantly changed with the advent of modern imaging techniques by which the tissues affected in the orbit can be identified, and nonspecific orbital inflammatory disease is classified according to the tissue involved. Twenty cases of nonspecific orbital inflammatory diseases were treated between July 1987 and September 1991. Eight patients had myositis, 6 had diffuse disease, 2 each had dacryoadenitis, periscleritis and perineuritis. Involvement of all four recti in one patient and isolated superior rectus and superior oblique each in 2 others are the unusual forms of myositis. Perineuritis presented as diffuse thickening of the optic nerve on CT scan with disc edema and normal vision in both patients with external ophthalmoplegia in one of them. All patients responded to oral steroids while the patient with myositis of all four recti required radiotherapy in addition. This series documents the spectrum of clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of nonspecific orbital inflammatory disease.
