    Notes: Summary We examined the association between oral contraceptive use and incidence of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus among 115117 female nurses free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer in 1976 and followed-up for 12 years. During 1237440 person years of follow-up, 2276 women who provided information on oral contraceptive use were clinically diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Women who used oral contraceptives in the past had only a slight and marginally increased relative risk of 1.10 (95% confidence interval 1.01, 1.21) compared to those women who had never used oral contraceptives after controlling for known risk factors of disease. We found no evidence of increased risk with longer duration of use or with shorter interval since last use. Current users did not have an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes (relative risk = 0.86, 95% confidence interval 0.46, 1.61) when compared to women who had never used the drug. There was no effect modification by obesity, family history of diabetes, or physical activity. These data suggest that past or current oral contraceptive use does not substantially influence subsequent risk of Type 2 diabetes.

    Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate whether different mammographic categories of interval cancer classified according to findings at the latest screening are associated with different distributions of prognostic factors or with different survival rates. The series consisted of all patients with invasive interval cancer detected from May 1978 to August 1995 (n = 544). The tumours were evaluated with regard to age, radiological category, interval between the latest screen and diagnosis and tumour characteristics at the time of diagnosis. We investigated possible relationships between the survival rate of patients with interval cancer and the interval between the latest screen and diagnosis, tumour characteristics and radiological category of the interval tumours. The study focused on comparison of patients with true interval and missed interval cancer. Women with mammographically occult tumours were younger than those in the other radiological categories. Comparisons of true interval cancers with overlooked or misinterpreted tumours showed equal distributions of age, tumour size, TNM stage and lymph node status. The overlooked or misinterpreted tumours showed significantly higher proportions of grade-I tumours (22 vs 11 %), tumours with low S-phase fraction (SPF; 44 vs 24 %) and oestrogen receptor (ER) positive tumours (72 vs 57 %). However, analyses of survival rates disclosed no clear differences between the two radiological categories. Radiological category and interval between the latest screen and diagnosis were not genuine predictors of the prognosis in patients with invasive interval breast cancer. No certain prognostic difference existed between true interval cancers and overlooked or misinterpreted interval breast cancers, despite higher proportions of grade-I tumours, ER positive tumours and tumours with low SPF in the latter group.

    Notes: Abstract Two patients with infantile phytanic acid storage disease (infantile Refsum disease), one of whom showed the presence of morphologically normal peroxisomes in a liver biopsy, were treated with a low phytanic acid diet for more than 2 years and the effects of treatment on certain clinical, biochemical and ultrastructural parameters were examined. Both patients showed evidence of either an improvement or stabilisation in their clinical condition. Plasma phytanic acid levels decreased to near normal values in approximately 6 weeks after the introduction of the diet; plasma pipecolic acid also declined markedly but the decrease was not so rapid and its level remained abnormal. C26∶C22 fatty acid ratios decreased very slowly and even after 2 years the values remained grossly abnormal. Despite the marked reduction of phytanic acid in the liver, there was an increase in the C26∶C22 fatty acid ratios and this appeared to be paralleled by an increase in inclusion bodies. Our data suggest that some patients with the infantile form of Refsum disease may show some clinical benefit from dietary management and this is reflected biochemically by decreases in the plasma levels of phytanic acid and pipecolic acid.

    Notes: Differential cross sections have been measured for the scattering of helium atoms from isolated CO molecules on a Pt(111) surface. The cross sections reveal an oscillatory structure as a function of scattering angle extending to large momentum transfer on both sides of the specular peak. Using a hard hemisphere model to approximate the interaction potential, the data can be well reproduced by a hard core of radius about 2.5 A(ring). This result is compared to the charge density profile of the adsorbed molecule and also to the gas phase interaction potential, and in both cases good agreement with the experimentally predicted classical turning points is found.

    Notes: A classical mechanical theory for the scattering of small, rigid molecules is developed which includes energy and momentum transfers between the surface and projectile for both translational and rotational motion. The results of calculations with this model are compared with recent high-precision measurements of the scattering of C2H2 from a clean, ordered LiF surface. The comparisons between calculations and measurements indicate that the observed angular distributions are dominated by single collisions with the surface and their shapes are due largely to translational energy (multiphonon) transfers. The calculated results for rotational energy transfer to the scattered molecules are also in reasonable agreement with measurements. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A numerical model was developed to study transient heat conduction in a pear-shaped can. The model was extended to perform bacterial lethality and nutrient retention calculations for foods processed in pear-shaped containers. Transient temperature distributions and lethality predictions obtained from the numerical model when applied to finite cylinders, compared favorably with previously accepted solutions. Calculations of integrated Fs values of processes for pear-shaped containers indicated up to 50% overprocessing by the single point lethality concept. An “equivalent cylinder” was defined as one having a geometry index and characteristic heat transfer length corresponding to those of a pear-shaped container. Process evaluations for “equivalent cylinders” were in agreement with solutions obtained for the pear-shaped model.
