Notes:
Conclusions None of the materials tested as heat-insulation filler eroded refractories as severely as steelmaking slag. The refractories were eroded less by the materials with a high iron oxide content than by the high-basicity materials, although the iron oxides penetrate more deeply into the refractory. The materials with a high silica content form highly viscous melts and erode the refractory only slightly but are unsuitable as fillers because in their interaction with the refractory materials (notably with the ramming compound) their viscosity increases still further, which may result in a severe encrustation of the lining. The erosion of the ramming compound by the materials tested was less than that of the chamotte refractory.
