    Notes: Summary Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma is extremely rare. A case of primary rhabdomyosarcoma in the left basal ganglia is described in a 2-year-old boy. The investigations revealed no primary lesion elsewhere except in the brain. At the electron-microscopic level, the majority of the cells contained specific microfilamentous bundles, which were either distributed at random or organized in myofibrils identified by their cross striations with primitive Z band formation.

    Notes: Summary Two cases, one of a chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma occuring in a 43-year-old man and the other of an intracerebellar hematoma in an 8-year-old boy, are reported. In both cases CT scans revealed an encapsulated lesion containing the hematoma, but angiographic pictures were poor except for revealing a space-occupying lesion and a small vascular lesion. Both hematomas were successfully removed. Each case was associated with a thick, fibrous capsule that was found histologically to arise from an occult angiomatous malformation. The encapsulated hematomas partially included old thromboses, and both old and recent areas of hemorrhage. The latter were considered to be due to the rupture of vessels developed near the inner surface of the thickest part of the fibrous capsule. Although the condition is uncommon, chronic hematoma must be considered when encapsulated mass lesion is present in the brain.

    Notes: Summary A disseminated choroid plexus papilloma (DCPP) with a malignant change in the cervico-spinal leptomeninges observed 4 years after the removal of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), originating from the fourth ventricle, was studied under the electron microscope. Although the ultrastructure of intracranial CPP has been reported by several authors, there are just a few reports on DCPP. The present tumor was ultrastructurally very similar to normal choroid plexus, but the lack of the capillary fenestration and of invaginations of the epithelial basal plasmalemmas suggested that the epithelium was deprived of secretory function.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the wall of the Dandy-Walker cyst has been described rarely. A boy aged 2 years was confirmed clinically, neuroradiologically, and operatively as having a Dandy-Walker cyst in the posterior fossa. The cyst wall obtained during surgery consisted of an outer arachnoid cell layer, intermediate interwoven neuroglial strands, and an inner layer of cells which lacked the characteristic appearance of ependyma. An unusual finding was a small, buried island of ependymal cells in the intermediate layer of the neuroglial tissue. Ultrastructural study of the cyst wall provides a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the Dandy-Walker syndrome.

    Notes: Anatomy and some physiological characteristics of the leaves in Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc., a dioecious clonal herb, were compared between two populations, one from a lowland in Shizuoka City (10 m above sea level), and another from a highland on Mt. Fuji (2500 m above sea level). Leaf mass per area (LMA) of the highland plants was about twice that of the lowland plants. The greater leaf thickness, thicker mesophyll cell walls and higher mesophyll cell density in the highland leaves contributed to the larger LMA. Although mesophyll area exposed to intercellular airspaces was greater in the highland leaves than in the lowland leaves by 30%, the surface area of chloroplasts facing intercellular airspaces was similar between these leaves. CO2 transfer conductance inside the leaf (gi) of the highland leaves (0·75 μmol m−2 s−1 Pa−1) is the lowest recorded for herbaceous plants and was only 40% of that in the lowland leaves. On the other hand, the difference in stomatal conductance was small. δ13C values in the leaf dry matter were greater in the highland leaves by 4‰. These data and the estimation of CO2 partial pressures in the intercellular air spaces and in the chloroplast suggested that the greater dry matter δ13C in the highland leaves, indicative of lower long-term ratio of the chloroplast stroma to the ambient CO2 partial pressures, would be mainly attributed to their lower gi.

    Notes: Abstract The antibiotic susceptibilities of seven Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato isolates from Ixodes persulcatus in China were examined by in-vitro microdilution minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and macrodilution minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods. All isolates tested were susceptible to amoxicillin, erythromycin, and minocycline. The MICs of these drugs for the Chinese isolates were 0.025–0.1 μg/ml, 〈0.012–0.05 μg/ml, and 〈0.012–0.05 μg/ml, respectively. The MBCs were 0.1–0.39 μg/ml, 〈0.012–0.2 μg/ml, and 0.025–0.39 μg/ml, respectively. The in-vivo antimicrobial susceptibilities of the Chinese Borrelia isolates to two test drugs, amoxicillin and minocycline, were evaluated using ddY mice. Mice were infected by subcutaneous inoculation into the right hind footpad. When infection was confirmed, the mice were treated by subcutaneous injection of the test drugs into the back. Amoxicillin and minocycline, which possessed high in-vitro activities against Lyme disease Borrelia, provided good protection against borreliosis in this animal model. Higher doses of these drugs resulted in elimination of the Lyme disease spirochete from all animals receiving this course of treatment. The 50% curative doses (CD50) of amoxicillin and minocycline were 8.7 mg/kg and 3.1 mg/kg, respectively. This suggested that amoxicillin and minocycline could be useful for the treatment of Chinese Borrelia infection.

    Notes: Abstract Four zooplankton species, three Arthropoda and one Chaetognata, from the Sea of Japan were analyzed in 1984 for eight major and fifteen trace elements, mainly by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Major and trace element contents on a dry weight basis varied little within a factor of 3.7, except for Ca (a factor of 5.7) among the four species. A log-log linearity with a slope of almost-1 was observed between mean oceanic residence time calculated from the mean dissolved river-water input τ R and the concentration factor with respect to mean seawater concentration (CF SW )for each species. The products of τ R and CF SW were nearly constant within a factor of 10, except for Br and Sb over seven orders of variation of CF SW for each zooplankton species. It demonstrates a new regularity in trace element contents of marine zooplankton species. This relationship leads to the conclusion that the concentration factors of elements for these zooplankton species with respect to elements for these zooplankton species with respect to mean dissolved river-water concentration (CF RW )are nearly constant within a factor of 10 with average values of 2.98 to 3.43 in logarithm.
