    Notes: Abstract Solid phase extraction (SPE) with the porous carbon sorbent CARB GR was used for the preconcentration of metalaxyl residues from a variety of Slovak grape wines with subsequent capillary GC and GC/MS analysis. Recovery was tested at various concentrations of metalaxyl in standard solutions (recovery,R≥92%, relative standard deviation RSD≤4.3%) and in wines. The value of recovery in spiked wines was dependent on the concentration (studied in the range 0.02–1.96 mg/1) and on the variety of wine (R=80–99%; RSD=2–7%). Limits of quantitation (for a sample volume of 50 ml) were determined to be 0.75 μg/1 with GC-FID and 0.50 μg/1 with GC/MS-ITD. Concentration levels of metalaxyl residues were determined in treated wines (with 0.25% Ridomil plus 48 WP) and a strong dependence on the protective term before the harvest was shown.

    Notes: A simple and quick gas chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of up to six commonly used antiepileptic drugs in human serum. The antiepileptics are isolated from serum by solid phase extraction on to a reversed phase sorbent and recovered with ethyl acetate as eluent. The ethyl acetate eluate is suitable for direct on-column injection on to a phenyl methyl siloxane capillary column; hydrogen is used as carrier gas and the compounds are separated with a two-ramp temperature program. Detection is by FID.The reproducibility of the method varies between 2 and 6% RSD, depending on the drug and the level analyzed; limits of detection were found to be 14-51 pg and minimum assayed concentrations in serum were between 14 and 51 ng/ml.

    Notes: ---A method was developed for the analysis of volatile polar compounds in a water matrix using open cap vials Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) and Capillary Gas Chromatography (CGC). Both SPME techniques - direct sampling and headspace - were tested. Optimization of experimental conditions - exposure time, desorption time, with headspace SPME in addition the influence of the temperature and ionic strength of the sample solution on compound sorption, and finally GC response - were investigated. The analytes were extracted by directly immersing the 85 μm polyacrylate fiber in the aqueous sample or in the headspace. The linear range of the preconcentration process and the precision were examined. The amount of polar analytes sorbed on the fiber was determined and was found to be concentration dependent; it amounted to 0.014-0.64% in the concentration range of 0.00425-425 ppm studied in aqueous solution for direct sampling SPME and to 0.011-2.76% for solutions of concentration 0.0425-255 ppm for headspace SPME. The limits of determination were ascertained. Headspace SPME was applied to the analysis of real-life samples.

    Notes: The possibilities and difficulties of trace analysis of highly complex organic mixtures has been demonstrated by the analysis of traces of numerous aromatic substances in an n-alkane matrix with a boiling point range of 151-270°C. Single column high resolution capillary gas chromatography (under optimized conditions) was performed after an off-line LC preseparation step which had been evaluated using a model mixture.Gas chromatographic quantitation of the 191 aromatic compounds identified was performed with an internal standard; following splitless injection and separation on a polydimethyl-siloxane column under temperature-programmed conditions the compounds were detected by flame ionization. The response factors of aromatic hydrocarbons at trace levels were verified and the precision and reproducibility both of the GC determination and the overall analysis, including preseparation, were studied.Percentage by weight of individual aromatic compounds (mainly alkylbenzenes, indanes, naphthalenes, and acenaphthenes) was in the range 10-3 to 10-6.

    Notes: ---In this work a fast gas chromatography set-up with on-column injection was optimized and evaluated with a model mixture of C8-C28 n-alkanes. Usual injection volumes when using narrow-bore (e. g., 0.1 mm i.d.) analytical columns are ca. 0.1 μL. The presented configuration allows introduction of 10-30-fold larger sample volumes without any distortion of peak shapes. In the set-up a normal-bore retention gap (1 m×0.32 mm i. d.) was coupled to a narrow-bore (4.8 m×0.1 mm i. d.×0.4 μm film thickness) analytical column using a low dead volume column connector. The effects of the experimental conditions such as inlet pressure, sample volume, initial injection temperature, and oven temperature on a peak focusing are discussed. H-u curves for helium and hydrogen are used to compare their suitability for high speed gas chromatography and to show the dependence of separation efficiency on the carrier gas velocity at high inlet pressures. In the fast gas chromatography system a baseline separation of C10-C28 n-alkanes was achieved in less than 3 minutes.
