    Notes: Summary Calcineurin immunoreactivity has been successfully detected in formalin-fixed paraffinembedded postmortem human brain tissue using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. We have examined two autopsy cases with Huntigton's disease (HD), three cases with Parkinson's disease, and two senile patients as controls. In the controls, calcineurin immunoreactivity was present in neuronal cells only and highly concentrated in the caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus (striato-pallidal pathway), substantia nigra (striato-nigral pathway) and hippocampal formation. These localizations were similar to those identified in rat brain. There was a marked depletion of neurons containing calcineurin in the caudate nucleus and putamen, and a marked reduction of calcineurin-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra were found in the cases with HD, but not in those with Parkinson's disease. These findings suggest that calcineurin can be a useful and specific index of neuronal degeneration in the caudato-putamen resulting from extrapyramidal diesease, and that the calcineurin-immunostaining method can be a valuable tool for clarifying the anatomy of the human extrapyramidal system.

    Notes: Summary Two cases of cerebral granular cell tumour are reported. In Case 1 the tumour arose from the genu of the corpus callosum, and in Case 2 it was found in the frontotemporoparietal lobes. Biopsy and autopsy specimens were examined with light and electron microscopy, and histochemical characteristics of the granule were analysed. Tumour cells from these two cases showed pleomorphism, but abundant granules in the cytoplasm were the most characteristic feature in these tumours. The granules were not stained by Sudan III and Sudan black, but were eosinophilic. They were PAS positive and not digested by diastase. Okamoto's reaction for glycolipid was positive after treatment by pyridine. They were also positive in Hotchkiss' method for glycolipid modified by Morrison and Hack, following immersion in chloroform and methanol solution. Histochemically, it was thought that granules consisted of glycoprotein. In the electron microscopic study dense bodies, multivesicular bodies, and vacuoles were seen in tumour cells, especially in the neoplastic granular cells. It was assumed that the tumour cells originated from astrocytes, because the cytoplasmic processes of the tumour cells were stained blue with PTAH, and contained microfibres of 80 Ā width. Gemistocytic astrocytes seen in the periphery of the tumour were also evidence indicating the neoplastic cell origin.

    Notes: Summary A case of meningioma arising from the right sphenoidal ridge is presented. Histologically, the tumour was composed of whorls of meningotheliomatous cells and many tumour cells containing intracellular inclusions were PAS positive, but diastase and neuraminidase resistant. The inclusions were named pseudopsammoma bodies by Kepes in 1961. The meningioma with pseudopsammoma bodies are a very rare entity and have been described in only7 previous reports. We had an opportunity to examine one case of a meningioma with pseudopsammoma bodies. Electron microscopically, these substances were located in the intracellular spaces lined by microvilli. In earlier reports, the substances were said to be secretory products and a possibility of meningioma cell differentiation to secretory cell was postulated. Using the Concanavalin A staining method, the results of our present study strongly support this opinion.

    Notes: Summary Occlusion of the intracranial portion of the internal carotid artery were encountered in two cases with suprasellar tumours, who had received irradiation therapy previously and shown excellent clinical improvement postoperatively. Clinical features and the angiographic characteristics were analysed in these two cases and the restults were compared with reports in the literature. The occlusive effect of radiation on the arterial wall was conceived as the cause of carotid obstruction. In order to avoid this side effect of radiation therapy, especially for brain tumours of low malignancy in childhood, careful estimation of the radiation dose should be required and cerebral angiographic follow-up during and after the treatment with radiation is indicated, particularly when the patient develops cerebral transient ischaemic symptoms.

    Notes: Summary We described two histochemical patterns of Ig G deposits in meningioma and discussed the pathogenesis of Ig G deposits. In meningioma with pseudopsammoma bodies, Ig G was secreted from tumour cells which differentiated to secretory epithelial cells, and was found to deposit in the pseudopsammoma bodies. However, in meningioma without pseudopsammoma bodies, Ig G was derived from plasma and became deposit around the blood vessels in the meningioma tissue.

    Notes: Summary Enlargement of a small aneurysm during an eleven year period was encountered in a 32-year-old man who had experienced intracranial haemorrhage from a distally located AVM. Clipping of the feeding artery together with the aneurysmal neck was performed. It was very rare to observe the aneurysmal growth associated with the AVM. This case was considered worth reporting as supporting evidence that hemodynamic stress plays an important role in the development of an aneurysm.

    Notes: Summary Cerebral venograms of 21 clinical cases of midline anomalies of the brain and of 80 human fetuses between 3 and 8 months old were examined. the diagnostic value of the venogram was fully proven, particularly for the midline cerebral anomalies, where deep cerebral structures and configuration of the tentorium cerebralli were not well visualized by other neuroradiologic maneuvers. Abnormal structures of the deep cerebral veins as well as the dural sinuses in these malformations were proved to retain the venous structures in the early fetal period. The time of formation of these malformations was also inferred from the viewpoint of the venous development. Study of the fetal venous system was found quite useful for embryologic analysis and classification of congenital malformations of the brain.

    Notes: Summary The cellular and topographic localization of calcineurin and S-100 protein was examined immunohistochemically in the mammalian and avian brain. Calcineurin immunoreactivity in both the avian and mammalian brain was located only in neuronal cells. S-100 protein was localized mainly in the glial and Schwann cells within the mammalian brain. However, in the avian brain, neuronal cells in certain regions such as the paleostriatum primitivum and the cerebellum, as well as other non-neuronal cells, exhibited S-100 protein immunoreactivity. A distinct difference was demonstrated in the macroscopic topographic distribution patterns of S-100 protein immunoreactivity between the mammalian and avian brains, while the patterns of calcineurin distribution were essentially identical. In addition, we provided calcineurin- and S-100 protein-immunocytochemical results for the turtle, frog and fish brain.
