Notes: Abstract Abnormal ventilatory control in patients with Prader-Willi syndrome when awake and sleeping include abnormal responses to hyperoxia, hypoxia and hypercarbia. Lindgren et al., report similar results regarding response to hypoxia; however, they have demonstrated significant minute ventilation and carbon dioxide responses in their patients treated with growth hormone irrespective of body mass index. It is possible that the explanation for the abnormal respiratory control in this syndrome is located in central rather than peripheral structures. The hypothalamus stands out as the possible location that links their abnormal ventilatory control with the other features. Further investigations to correlate this finding are warranted.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of gill epidermal cells of Diopatra neapolitana and their relationship with blood spaces are described. The existence of a basal infolding complex, related to the blood spaces, is also reported. A possible involvement of these cells in osmoregulation and ion interchange, apart from their well-known role in respiration, is suggested.

Notes: Abstract  A genetic map was constructed from an F2 population of 76 individuals for the purpose of comparing the arrangement of loci in the A and E Solanum genomes. This progeny was derived from an interspecific cross between the species Solanum palustre×Solanum etuberosum, both of which are E-genome species. Two hundred and eighty one probes previously mapped in tomato and potato (A-genome, as postulated for diploid cultivated potato species by Matsubayashi 1991) disclosed 109 segregating loci in this population. Of these, 80 loci were linked in 19 linkage groups covering a total of 720.4 cM, with an average of 9 cM between markers. Although the genetic map of the E-genome showed conservation for most linkage groups with those of tomato and the A-genome, various translocations and possible inversions and transpositions were detected. It is evident that the accumulation of these structural changes in the E-genome is sufficient to cause the observed hybrid sterility. The major rearrangements in the E-genome included multiple translocations involving mosly linkage groups 2 and 8. Also a transposition was detected on group 9, with the same group-10 inversion distinguishing potato from tomato. Definitively groups 2, 8, 9 and 10, and possibly groups 1, 4 and 12, in the E-genome are structurally different from their homologues in the A-genome. In general, recombination values were larger in the E- than in the A-genome. The extensive structural differentiation of the E-genome with respect to that of potato and tomato justifies its present designation as a different genome, which is supported by previous chromosome-pairing studies. The difficult introgression of desirable traits from the Etuberosum species into potato can be explained by these structural differences.

Notes: Abstracts A 10-year-old boy with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) was treated with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) at a dose of 60 mg/m2/day. Recombinant erythropoietin was also used. The patient parents and other relatives, all Jehova's Witnesses, refused any type of hemotherapy. After 43 days of ATRA treatment complete remission was obtained without the use of hemotherapy. This case exemplifies the advantages provided by ATRA treatment in APL.

Notes: Summary The production of human gamma interferon as intracellular inclusion bodies in Escherichia coli, which simplified the purification process, is described. An expression plasmid carrying lipoprotein and the tryptophane promoters in tandem was used. Preparation of highly pure interferon was achieved using high resolution chromatography after denaturation and renaturation steps. Structural characteristics of this protein were verified by mass spectrometric analysis. Additional control tests have shown the suitability of the final product for clinical purposes.

Notes: Summary The action of high doses of clomiphene citrate on the nuclei of hypothalamic arcuate neurons of male cats has been studied. Clomiphene produces an accumulation of typical crystalloid material in the nuclei. After administration of a protein-synthesis inhibitor, no such material was observed in clomiphene-treated animals. These ultrastructural features could possibly be due to a more intense protein synthesis in the hypothalamic arcuate neurons.

Notes: A relatively simple, yet efficient and accurate finite difference method is developed for the solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations for both laminar and turbulent flows. The numerical procedure is subjected to rigorous validation tests in the laminar case, comparing its predictions with exact analytical solutions, asymptotic solutions, and/or experimental results. Calculations of periodic laminar boundary layers are performed from low to very high oscillation frequencies, for small and large amplitudes, for zero as well as adverse time-mean pressure gradients, and even in the presence of significant flow reversal. The numerical method is then applied to predict a relatively simple experimental periodic turbulent boundary layer, using two well-known quasi-steady closure models. The predictions are shown to be in good agreement with the measurements, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the present numerical scheme for handling periodic turbulent boundary layers. The method is thus a useful tool for the further development of turbulence models for more complex unsteady flows.
