    Notes: Abstract The modeling of Schumpeterian competition as a process of innovation, imitation and selection was first presented by Nelson/Winter (1982) in a simulation study and further analyzed in a similar but general analytical formulation by Iwai (1984a, 1984b). Their results concerning the relations between the combination of the different forces of Schumpeterian competition and market structure respectively the distributions of profits are interesting, but restricted to competitive markets. Comparing rules of thumb and satisficing for the R&D decisions the present study analyzes the process of Schumpeterian competition in a heterogeneous oligopoly. Firstly, the authors find for the R&D-concentration relation results contrary to the traditional interpretation of Schumpeter. Secondly, Iwai's (1984a, 1984b) qualitative results hold in this less restrictive modeling.

    Notes: Abstract  We investigated the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in a visuospatial delayed-response task in humans. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (20 Hz, 0.5 s) was used to interfere temporarily with cortical activity in the DLPFC and PPC during the delay period. Omnidirectional memory-guided saccades with a 3-s delay were used as a quantifiable motor response to a visuospatial cue. The question addressed was whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the DLPFC or PPC during the sensory of memory phase affects accuracy of memory-guided saccades. Stimulation over the primary motor cortex served as control. Stimulation over the DLPFC significantly impaired accuracy of memory-guided saccades in amplitude and direction. Stimulation over the PPC impaired accuracy of memory-guided saccades only when applied within the sensory phase (50 ms after cue offset), but not during the memory phase (500 ms after cue offset). These results provide further evidence for a parieto-frontal network controlling performance of visuospatial delayed-response tasks in humans. It can be concluded that within this network the DLPFC is mainly concerned with the mnemonic respresentation and the PPC with the sensory representation of spatially defined perceptual information.

    Notes: Abstract New requirements of growing computer networks and information systems have an influence on extended client/server models with increased functionality. This forms the basis for service management in distributed systems which is realized by a service trading concept. This paper studies the requirements derived from the Open Distributed Processing (ODP) Reference Model in order to consider an open service market. Furthermore, it examines management possibilities for describing the service trading scenario. Because of similar architectures and properties ODP services, service offers, types, exporters and traders are mapped onto management components and modeled as managed objects. Therefore, the Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects (GDMO) are used. The final concept allows a precise and unambiguous study of the service trading scenario and provides means for exporting and importing of service offers in a distributed environment.

    Notes: Summary A newly diagnosed patient with Wilson's disease is reported in whom the only clearly pathological neurophysiological findings before treatment were abnormal electromyographic (EMG) responses evoked by transcranial magnetic brain stimulation. Serial examinations over 10 months following commencement of treatment with D-penicillamine revealed normalisation of EMG responses. Pathophysiologically, the initially abnormal EMG responses probably resulted from reversible impairment of impulse propagation along corticomotoneuronal pathways and/or a reduced excitability of cortical cells due to impaired function of the basal ganglia.

    Notes: Abstract The three-dimensional structure of a glycopeptide, His-Thr*-Ser*-Thr*-Ser*-Ser*-Ser*-Val-Thr-Lys, with 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-α-D-galactose (GalNAc) residues linked to six adjacent amino acids from Thr-10 to Ser-15, was studied by NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The hexaglycosylated decapeptide is part of the extracellular domain of human glycophorin A and shows an extended structure of the peptide backbone due to O-glycosylation. Furthermore, each GalNAc residue exhibits one and only one NOE contact from the NHAc proton to the backbone amide proton of the amino acid that the sugar is directly bound to. This indicates a strong preference for the orientation of all GalNAc residues towards the N-terminus. NOE build-up curves were used to determine 42 inter-proton distances that, in connection with φ angles of the peptide backbone obtained from 3J-coupling constants, resulted in constraints for a MD simulation in water. The NMR data and the MD simulations show a preference for an extended backbone structure. The GalNAc residues are located alternatingly on opposite sides of the backbone and reduce the flexibility of the peptide backbone. The conformation of the molecule is relatively rigid and shows a 'wave-type' 3D structure of the peptide backbone within the glycosylation cluster. This new structural element is also supported by the unusual CD spectrum of the glycopeptide.
