Notes:
Summary 1. The perceptor system for prey stimuli inVelia has been further analyzed by means of bimodal pair-comparison tests using two circular discs (prey dummies) combined with standardized vibration stimuli (Meyer, 1971a). 2. The stimulus value of a disc (as represented by probit transformed choice frequencies) increases and falls back to zero repeatedly with a periodicity of about 8 ° as the height of the disc above the horizon increases. There are four positions of maximum effectiveness in the vertical test range of 0 ° to 30 ° (Fig. 1). Using discs of various diameter (1 °≦α≦5,7 °) we can observe that the optimal diameter is reduced from 3.4 ° to 2 ° as the height above the horizon increases (Fig. 3). 3. Simultaneous stimulation by a second stationary disc near the horizon causes a sign change of the evaluation (= lateral inhibition). Two discs of optimal diameter placed at heights that are maximally effective cause a particularly intensive inhibition. 4. By increasing the horizontal-angular separation between two discs, the stimulus value curve shows minima at regular intervals of 10.3 °. Between such minima the curve returns to the base line. Discs of optimal diameter show inhibitory interactions when separated by angular distances up to 55 ° between their centers. The inhibitory effect falls exponentially according to the target distance and varies with the diameter and contrast (Fig. 4, 5, 10). 5. Iso-value curves were obtained by interpolation of curves for two discs while step-wise increasing their distance in 26 different directions. A contour map drawn from the isovalue lines shows a definite relationship to the hexagonal ommatidial array (Fig. 8). The divergence angle between visual units as measured by these functional methods (10.3 °) is close to the anatomical entrance angle for the ommatidia (10.5 °). 6. The height-dependent diameter preference of small prey objects indicates a pronounced dorso-ventral asymmetry of the visual field ofVelia (Fig. 1, 9). These are the first observations of this type of evaluating process in insects. The biological importance of this principle of stimulus evaluation for food gathering is discussed. 7. Through quantitative stimulus-reaction relationships a functional model of a flicker-center detector has been developed with differentiating and spatiotemporal integrating characteristics (Meyer, 1971b). In light of the measured spatial interactions it must be concluded that large field higher-order neurons play a role.
