Notes: Summary An 18-year-old girl died following a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease of nine years duration. At 9 years of age, she developed intellectual deterioration associated with speach difficulty, pseudobulbar palsy and ataxia. The progression included spastic quadriplegia, anarthria, severe dysphagia, ophthalmoplegia, and pes cavus. There was no family history. The brain was uniformly small and the substantia nigra was not pigmented. Neuronal loss and gliosis involving globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, thalamic nuclei, brain stem, cerebellum, and spinal cord gave the picture of multisystem atrophy. Intranuclear hyaline inclusions were observed in numerous neurons of the central and peripheral nervous system. These were auto-fluorescent and were made up of intermingled straight filaments (8–9 nm in diameter). Only two previously reported cases showing these same inclusions are known. They are reviewed, compared, and discussed in relation to primary neuronal degenerations.

Notes: Summary Agenesis of the cerebellar vermis with fusion of the dentate nuclei and cerebellar hemispheres (rhombencephalosynapsis) is a rare cerebral malformation. We report the case of a 7-h-old girl whose mother had taken the drug phencyclidine during the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. Absence of the septum pellucidum, hypoplasia of the commissural system, optic nerves, chiasm and tracts, moderate hydrocephalus, and agenesis of the posterior lobe of the pituitary were also found. Extracranial congenital anomalies involved the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, and musculoskeletal systems. Death was secondary to severe respiratory distress and bradycardia. The literature concerning this rare form of cerebellar malformation is reviewed.

Notes: Summary We report a microcystic meningioma of the falx cerebri which had an unusual histological pattern. It contained numerous palisaded structures in loose areas, giving the appearance of the loose and dense areas of a schwannoma. There were minimal meningeal whorls. Ultrastructural study confirmed the totally meningiomatous nature of this tumor.

Notes: Summary Five human glioblastomas maintained in an organ culture system were studied by autoradiography to determine, after 8 days in vitro, the growth fraction (GF) of the explants, their total cell cycle time (T C) and cell cycle phase durations (T S,T G1,T G2 andT M), and their potential doubling time (T pot) after pulse-labeling with [3H] TdR for 1 h. These parameters were derived from computer analysis of fraction of labeled mitoses (FLM) curves. The results fell into two groups. In two tumors, the cultures had a GF of 0.25 and 0.23. From the FLM curves were derived aT C of 89 and 83 h, aT S of 16.5 and 9.5 h, and aT G1 of 60 and 61 h.T M was estimated at 0.9 and 0.6 h, andT G2 12h. TheT pot was 12 days. These values approximate those reported for glioblastomas and other human malignancies in vivo. The explants of three other glioblastomas gave different FLM curves: the derivedT S were increased to 36 and 55 h, estimatedT M ranged from 2.4 to 4.5 h, andT G2 ranged from 11 to 20 h.T C andT G1 could not be estimated. In two tumors the GF was reduced to 0.12 and 0.11, with aT pot of respectively 52 and 39 days. These values are comparable to those reported for astrocytomas of intermediate malignancy. In the third tumor, the GF was only 0.014. The reduction in GF and the lengthening of cell cycle components in this group of explants are similar to the kinetic changes reported in some in vivo tumors and three-dimensional in vitro systems that have reached a plateau stage of growth. They are probably related to the greater opportunities for cell-to-cell contacts and the resulting increased differentiation favored by the organ culture technique.

Notes: Summary A 33-year-old man, an immunosuppressed renal allograft recipient, developed fever of unknown etiology, multiple pulmonary densities, space-occupying lesions in the liver, confusion, disorientation, and seizures with cerebral infarcts. At autopsy, changes classical of active lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) were found in the brain but those studied in the lungs and liver were in the healing phase. In addition, one cerebral focus in the right temporooccipital lobe showed a lymphomatous transformation. Immunofluorescence studies done on this focus showed monoclonal IgG-λ cytoplasmic staining in the perivascular infiltrate. Immunoperoxidase studies confirmed the monoclonal nature of this focus but showed a polyclonal pattern in the other foci. This finding is discussed along with the relationship between LYG and lymphoma.

Notes: Abstract We describe two asymptomatic newborns with nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency in whom increased urinary methylmalonic acid was detected by routine neonatal screening at 3 weeks of age. Both infants were exclusively breast-fed. One mother suffered from pernicious anaemia, and the other was a strict vegetarian. Both mothers had no clinical or haematological abnormality, aside from a borderline mean corpuscular volume for the vegetarian mother. This report illustrates the early appearance of functional vitamin B12 deficiency in breastfed infants of vitamin B12-depleted mothers. It also demonstrates that urinary methylmalonic acid measurement is a sensitive indicator of tissue vitamin B12 deficiency.

Notes: : Alum treatment of a shallow lake, with mean depth 2 m and area 137 ha, curtailed internal loading of P for at least one ear. Mean summer total P and chl a decreased from 76 and 27μg l−1, respectively, in 1978 before treatment. to 29 and 14 μ l−1, while mean summer Sed transparency increased from 1.6 to 2.2 m and blue green algae were no longer dominant. Macrophyte biomass and distribution retuned during the post-alum year, 1980-1981, to previous levels after a 1979 four-month lake level drawdown had reduced biomass by 84 percent The improved transparency, resulting from the decrease in chl a following treatment, could encourage greater biomass of macrophytes in the deeper area of the lake. Recovery of macrophyte biomass to predrawdown levels may restore internal loading of P through enrichment of deep water sediments during winter dieback and decomposition.
