Notes: Abstract. Background: Analysis of unenhanced and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) images of struma ovarii, a rare benign neoplasm of the ovary, is the aim of this study. Methods: T2-weighted and Gd-DTPA-enhanced T1-weighted MR images of five histologically proven struma ovarii were evaluated retrospectively. Results: In all patients, unenhanced and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR images showed complex cystic masses composed of multiple cysts and a solid component, indicating the presence of large and small thyroid follicles. In four patients, the cyst fluid was hypointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. In one patient, the fluid was hyperintense on T1-weighted images and hypointense on T2-weighted images due to hemorrhage. Conclusion: A complex mass composed of multiple cysts and a solid component, indicating the presence of large and small thyroid follicles, appeared to be a characteristic MR finding of struma ovarii.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of absorption of paraquat, which is a type of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), was studied using rat intestinal loops and brushborder membrane vesicles. Approximately 47% and 37% of radioactively labeled paraquat injected into jejunal and ileal loops disappeared, respectively, after 60 min. Since only a small amount of radioactivity was detected in the mucosal fraction, most of the paraquat that disappeared from the intestinal lumen was considered to have been carried away by the bloodstream, indicating that paraquat absorption was greater than expected. In spite of its low lipid solubility, the uptake of paraquat by brush-border membrane vesicles reflected smooth penetration into the intravesicular space rather than binding to the membrane. According to the increase in extravesicular paraquat concentration, paraquat uptake in the early stage was saturable. Moreover, early paraquat uptake was significantly inhibited by structurally-related QACs such as tetramethylammonium and choline, but not by an endogenous dicationic amine (putrescine). On the other hand, inside-negative membrane potential had no significant effect on the time course of paraquat uptake. From these results, it is suggested that paraquat is absorbed through a specialized mechanism associated with the carrier-mediated transport system for choline on the brush-border membrane.

Notes: Abstract A far-infrared (FIR) NH3 laser was resonantly pumped with a line-tunable infrared (IR) NH3 laser. The number of the observed FIR laser lines amounted to 33. Most of them belonged toaR(J,K) rotation-inversion transition in (0, 1, 0, 0) vibrational state. The line tunability of sealed-off FIR NH3 laser was almost achieved in 90, 115, 150, and 220 μm wavelength regions by the selective line tuning of the pumping IR NH3 laser.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the roles of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), conventional US, CT, and MRI in differential diagnosis of gallbladder wall thickening. We scrutinized images for the presence of the multiple-layer patterns of the thickened gallbladder walls during preoperative images (EUS, n = 22; US, n = 23; CT, n = 20; MRI, n = 15) and retrospectively correlated them with surgical results in 25 patients. The pathological diagnoses included 7 gallbladder cancers, 9 cases of chronic cholecystitis, 5 cases of xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, and 4 cases of adenomyomatosis. Multiple-layer patterns of gallbladder wall were observed in patients with inflammatory and benign diseases by US, EUS, CT, and MRI. This pattern was demonstrated by EUS more efficiently compared with other means of imaging. All subjects with loss of multiple layers were finally diagnosed by use of EUS as having gallbladder cancer at surgery. Loss of multiple-layer patterns of the gallbladder wall demonstrated by EUS was the most specific finding in diagnosing gallbladder cancer.

Notes: Abstract  Background: In women over the age of 50, a mature cystic teratoma is reportedly likely to change into a malignant form. A mature cystic teratoma that remained in a benign form in a very old woman is a rare event. We report a case of a benign cystic teratoma, which is the oldest in Japan. Case: An 85-year-old Japanese woman with a pelvic mass measuring 8.90×5.81 cm by ultrasonography was referred to our Department for detailed. Transvaginal ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and serum concentrations of tumor markers led to a diagnosis of a mature cystic teratoma. Histological findings postoperatively confirmed the presence of a mature cystic teratoma. Conclusions: This case report describes a mature cystic teratoma which is the second oldest case reported in the world. We reconfirmed that a mature cystic teratoma in elderly women is not frequent, but does occur.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of 20 mg (+)-, (-)- and racemic homochlorcyclizine (HCZ) have been studied in humans. The formation of the quarternary ammonium-linked glucuronide was an important metabolic pathway, and the metabolic process was enantioselective as a result of differing urinary excretion rates of (+)-, (-)- and racemic glucuronide. There were significant differences between (+)-, (-) and racemic HCZ in AUC (0-14 h) and plasma protein binding, but all HCZ enantiomers were slowly absorbed and eliminated (elimination half-lives about 11 h). The results shows help to establish a more efficient dosage regimen for HCZ therapy.

Notes: Paper presented in part at the 47th Annual Meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Japan, Tokyo, September 21, 2000.The authors examined the effects of Bifidobacterium-fermented soy milk extract (BE) containing genistein and daidzein on the hyaluronic acid (HA) content and rheological and physiological properties of hairless mouse and/or human skin. Topical application of BE for six weeks significantly restored changes in the elasticity and viscoelasticity of mouse skin, increased the HA content, and hydrated and thickened mouse skin. Also, topical application of a gel formula containing 10% BE to the human forearm for three months significantly lessened the decrease in skin elasticity. Therefore, BE is expected to become a new cosmetic ingredient to prevent the loss of skin elasticity through enhancement of HA production.

Notes: A loop-deleted mutant form of 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase from Thermus thermophilus was constructed to investigate the relationship between the flexibility of the structure and the thermostability of the enzyme. The structure of the mutant enzyme was determined by X-ray crystallography and was found to be almost the same as that of the native enzyme with a reduced temperature factor. Although the mutant protein had lost the flexible loop, its function and thermostability had remained unchanged. This phenomenon can be explained by an internal reprieve tolerance mechanism.
