    Notes: Abstract  Recently, we demonstrated the prevalent role of cerebellar networks in the acquisition of the procedural components of spatial information by testing hemicerebellectomized (HCbed) rats in a classical spatial task, the Morris water maze (MWM). As procedures used in the water maze are a mixture of different components (that is, general procedures, exploration procedures, direct reaching procedures), for optimally solving a spatial task all procedural components must be opportunely managed. Thus, severely impaired procedural learning of cerebellar origin can be better comprehended by fractionating the procedural facets. To this aim, a two-step water-maze paradigm was employed. Normal rats were first trained to search for a hidden platform moved to a different position in each trial, utilizing a water maze setting in which visual cues were abolished by heavy black curtains surrounding the tank. In this paradigm, normal animals solved the task by using general and exploration procedures, but they could not use direct reaching skills. A subgroup of these pretrained animals was then HCbed and, after recovery from cerebellar lesion, was tested in a water maze with normal environmental cues available, a paradigm in which normal animals develop abilities for reaching the target with very direct trajectories. Pretrained HCbed animals, however, did not display the typical spatial deficits of naive HCbed rats, persisted in exhibiting the scanning strategy learned during pretraining, and never displayed direct reaching skills. In conclusion, cerebellar networks appear to be involved in the acquisition of all procedural facets necessary for shifting behavior within the maze until direct reaching of the platform. The lack of flexibility in changing exploration strategies displayed by pretrained HCbed rats is interpreted by taking into account the well-known cerebellar frontal interplay sculpting a specific cerebellar role in the acquisition of spatial procedural steps.

    Notes: Summary In order to investigate the topographical relationships between the caudal diencephalic cells of origin of ascending and descending projections in the rat, one fluorescent retrograde tracer was injected into the striatum and another into the medulla oblongata. The medullary injections were mainly centered in the inferior olive. Cells labeled from the striatal injections densely filled the thalamic parafascicular nucleus. Cells labeled from the medullary injections were seen ventrally to the fasciculus retroflexus in the subparafascicular nucleus. The two populations were mixed in a small area at the ventromedial border of the fasciculus retroflexus. No double labeled cells were observed. The present results indicate that caudal diencephalic cells which ascend to the striatum are different from those descending to the medulla oblongata and that they partially overlap.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of thalamic cells projecting to the head of the caudate and their interrelations with thalamo-cortical cells were studied in the cat with different combinations of fluorescent tracers. Injections in the head of the caudate were combined with the injections in the pericruciate, proreal, suprasylvian, anterior cingulate, occipital and ectosylvian cortices. The following results were obtained: (i) Injections in the head of the caudate resulted in retrograde labeling of thalamic cells medially and laterally to the anteromedial (AM) nucleus, and in the medioventral part of the ventral anterior (VA) nucleus. Further, labeled cells were distributed throughout the anterior intralaminar central medial (CeM), paracentral (Pc) and central lateral (CL) nuclei, and the posterior intralaminar center median-parafascicular complex (CM-Pf). Labeled cells were mainly grouped in the mediodorsal parts of the anterior intralaminar nuclei; they were also found in the more dorsal part of the mediodorsal (MD) nucleus, ventral to the thalamic paraventricular (Pv) nucleus and to the habenular complex, (ii) Thalamo-cortical and thalamo-caudate cells overlapped in the medial part of the VA; in the anterior intralaminar nuclei they were either intermingled or were distributed in separate clusters or longitudinal bands. The two cell populations also overlapped in the posterior intralaminar complex. The greatest overlap occurred with the thalamic cell population projecting to the pericruciate cortex. (iii) Thalamic cells bifurcating to the head of the caudate and to the pericruciate cortex were found lateral to the AM, within the VA, and throughout the anterior intralaminar nuclei, especially in the CeM and in the posterior part of the CL; a few branched cells were also found in the CM. Thalamic cells bifurcating to caudate and anterior suprasylvian cortex were also found in the VA. Very few cells (scattered in the anterior thalamus lateral to the AM, as well as in the CeM, Pc and CL) were found to bifurcate to the head of the caudate and the other cortical fields here examined.

    Notes: Summary The anterograde transport of lectin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was here employed in order to visualize crossed cortico-thalamic efferents of the motor cortex in rats and cats. After WGA-HRP cortical injections in the rat retrogradely labeled cells were observed in the ipsilateral thalamus, and heavy anterograde labeling was observed both in the ipsi-and contralateral thalamus. The contralateral anterograde labeling was less intense than the ipsilateral one and it was distributed in the anterior intralaminar structures, in the parafascicular nucleus, in the ventromedial, ventrolateral and ventrobasal nuclei and in the posterior complex, symmetrically to the labeling observed on the ipsilateral side. Further experiments were made in the rat in order to ascertain that the bilateral anterograde labeling in the thalamus derived unilaterally from the cortex. To this purpose, kainic acid was injected unilaterally either into the frontal cortex or into the thalamus, and WGA-HRP was later injected on the same side in the frontal cortex. Moreover, WGA-HRP was injected into the frontal cortex after splitting of the corpus callosum. The results obtained in these experiments confirmed that cortical neurons projected bilaterally upon the thalamus. Further, these experiments indicated that at least the majority of the contralateral fronto-thalamic fibers crossed the midline in the thalamic massa intermedia. WGA-HRP injections into the pericruciate cortex in the cat confirmed the presence of anterogradely labeled terminals in the contralateral anterior and posterior intralaminar, ventral anterior, ventromedial and ventrolateral nuclei. The labeling was in all cases heavier in the intralaminar nuclei than in the other structures, but it was less intense than that observed in the rat. The labeling in the contralateral principal nuclei was heavier in one case in which the injection area diffused into the proreal cortex than in the other cats. Thus, the present results indicate that frontal efferents terminate more densely in the rat's than in the cat's contralateral thalamus. In the latter species frontal fibers are mainly distributed upon the contralateral intralaminar nuclei, whereas in the rat frontal efferents are also heavily distributed upon the ventral nuclear complex.

    Notes: Summary In a group of ten hypertensive patients, the effects of methyldopa administration in two different formulations on serum prolactin (PRL) were studied. A single oral dose of normal release methyldopa significantly increased serum prolactin levels, peak concentrations occurring 3 to 6 h after drug administration. On the contrary, administration of sustained release methyldopa at the same dose was only followed by slight and not significant fluctuations in prolactin plasma levels. Both formulations produced a significant decrease of systolic and diastolic blood pressures, without significant differences between sustained and normal release methyldopa effects.

    Notes: Neurons projecting to the parietal cortex or striatum and neurons showing immunoreactivity for the calcium-binding proteins parvalbumin and 28KD-calbindin were examined in the anterior intralaminar nuclei (IL) of the cat. Retrograde tracing from deep or superficial parietal cortical layers or from the caudate nucleus was coupled with immunohistochemistry to determine which of these proteins were expressed in the projection neurons. It was found that IL neurons project to deep as well as to superficial layers of the parietal cortex, that IL-cortical neurons could be differentiated into two populations according to their cortical projection pattern and their soma size, and that IL neurons projecting to the parietal cortex or to the striatum express 28KD calbindin immunoreactivity but not parvalbumin immunoreactivity. The distribution of immunoreactivity to 28KD calbindin and parvalbumin in the neuropil showed a consistent complementary distribution pattern in the IL. The compartments based on differential parvalbumin and 28KD calbindin expression may indicate the presence of functionally segregated units in IL.

    Notes: This study investigated the organization of the callosal connections of the two subdivisions of the monkey dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), dorso-rostral (F7) and dorso-caudal (F2). In one animal, Fast blue and Diamidino yellow were injected in F7 and F2, respectively; in a second animal, the pattern of injections was reversed. F7 and F2 receive a major callosal input from their homotopic counterpart. The heterotopic connections of F7 originate mainly from F2, with smaller contingent from pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA, F6), area 8 (frontal eye fields), and prefrontal cortex (area 46), while those of F2 originate from F7, with smaller contributions from ventral premotor areas (F5, F4), SMA-proper (F3), and primary motor cortex (M1). Callosal cells projecting homotopically are mostly located in layers II–III, those projecting heterotopically occupy layers II–III and V–VI. A spectral analysis was used to characterize the spatial fluctuations of the distribution of callosal neurons, in both F7 and F2, as well as in adjacent cortical areas. The results revealed two main periodic components. The first, in the domain of the low spatial frequencies, corresponds to periodicities of cell density with peak-to-peak distances of approximately 10 mm, and suggests an arrangement of callosal cells in the form of 5-mm wide bands. The second corresponds to periodicities of approximately 2 mm, and probably reflects a 1-mm columnar-like arrangement. Coherency and phase analyses showed that, although similar in their spatial arrangements, callosal cells projecting to dorsal premotor areas are segregated in the tangential cortical domain.

    Notes: Photoluminescence in the visible domain can be observed in amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx) alloys prepared by evaporation of silicon under a flow of nitrogen ions. A strong improvement of the photoluminescence intensity was obtained with annealing treatments in the range 500–1150 °C. Structural investigations were performed by infrared and Raman spectrometry experiments. The optical gap was obtained from transmission measurements in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared range. The evolutions of the structure and the optical properties with annealing treatments are correlated to the evolution of the photoluminescence. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
