Description: Demand Side Management (DSM) is usually considered as a process of energy consumption shifting from peak hours to off-peak times. DSM does not always reduce total energy consumption, but it helps to meet energy demand and supply. For example, it balances variable generation from renewables (such as solar and wind) when energy demand differs from renewable generation.

Notes: Abstract. We consider the following pebble motion problem. We are given a tree T with n vertices and two arrangements $\cal R$ and $\cal S$ of k〈n distinct pebbles numbered 1, . . ., k on distinct vertices of the tree. Pebbles can move along edges of T provided that at any given time at most one pebble is traveling along an edge and each vertex of T contains at most one pebble. We are asked the following question: Is arrangement $\cal S$ reachable from $\cal R$ ? We present an algorithm that, on input two arrangements of k pebbles on a tree with n vertices, decides in time O(n) whether the two arrangements are reachable from one another. We also give an algorithm that, on input two reachable configurations, returns a sequence of moves that transforms one configuration into the other. The pebble motion problem on trees has various applications including memory management in distributed systems, robot motion planning, and deflection routing.

Notes: Abstract Since behavioural symptoms (tremor, irritability, pilo-erection and shaking) induced by imidazole (IMID) in rats suggested an underlying modification of arousal and/or emotionality, further studies were performed in order to extend the range of behavioural influences of IMID. In the open-field test, IMID (37.5–300 mg/kg IP) inhibited crossing and rearing in a dose-dependent fashion, this effect being long lasting (about 3 h at 75 mg/kg). Yohimbine (YOH) (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg IP), described as anxiogenic and fear-inducing in animals and in man, when investigated in this same test, inhibited the activity of rats similarly to IMID. Since diazepam (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) but not clonidine (0.075 and 0.150 mg/kg IP) pretreatment reversed IMID- and YOH-induced hypomotility, the hypothesis that IMID effects in the open field might reflect an anxiety-like state was investigated by means of social interaction and x-maze, two tests considered highly specific for anxiety studies. The data obtained show that IMID depresses social interactions only at doses inhibiting motor activity; YOH, in our experimental conditions, produced a similar effect. In an elevated x-maze, with alternate open and closed arms, IMID (37.5 and 75 mg/kg) decreased the proportion of open-arm entries and the time spent in them, an effect prevented by diazepam pretreatment (1 mg/kg IP). Finally, mean arterial pressure (MAP) was assessed in anesthetized rats treated with IMID and YOH at doses equivalent as regards behavioural effects. MAP was increased by IMID whether IP or IV and decreased by YOH; moreover, YOH, as expected, antagonized clonidine-induced hypotension, while IMID was ineffective. In conclusion, regardless of the possible receptors underlying the results obtained, IMID emerges as a drug able to exert potent effects on emotional reactivity and blood pressure of rats very similar to YOH in behavioural but not in cardiovascular experiments.

Notes: Abstract The Orbetello lagoon is now highly eutrophic and has experienced increasing incidence of anoxia causing serious economic damage. A multidisciplinary study was commenced in March 1987 to investigate the part played by the lagoon sediments and interstitial water in recycling nutrients and contributing to the observed anoxia. Eleven undisturbed cores were collected and sub-sampled at 2 cm intervals. Interstitial water was obtained by centrifugation and analyzed for pH, Eh, nutrients, major and some minor elements. Differential fluxes from the sediments of 0.2–10 μg cm−2 day−1 of ammonia and 0.02–0.7 μg cm−2 day−1 of orthophosphate were obtained depending on the season, temperature of the sediments and the sampling location. A highly significant linear correlation (r 2 = 0.86) was found between bicarbonate and ammonia concentrations in the interstitial waters, due to the release of these compounds during the degradation organic matter. A diagenetic model was developed to predict the alkalinity of interstitial water from the theoretical reactions involved in the decomposition of organic matter. The predicted values for bicarbonate and ammonia agreed well with the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract In this work an efficient model for parallel computing, called Shuffled Mesh (SM), is introduced. This bounded degree model has the mesh as subgraph and it is based on the union of mesh and shuffle‐exchange topologies. It is shown that an N‐processor SM combines the features of mesh, shuffle‐exchange, hypercubic networks, mesh of trees and hypercube, and is able to support all the algorithms designed for such topologies with constant or logarithmic time performance degradation. Finally, it is proved that the VLSI layout of a SM is the same as of a shuffle exchange of the same size.

Notes: Abstract In this paper closure properties and decision problems for families of languages accepted by deterministic and nondeterministic systolic binary Y-tree automata are studied. Non closure results under basic language operations are stated by means of new nonacceptability criteria for these classes of automata. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given in terms of the shape of the underlying Y-tree, for the closure under λ-free regular substitution, concatenation, inverse homomorfism and for the closure under right concatenation with and quotient by finite sets. Moreover in the nondeterministic case necessary and sufficient conditions are given again in terms of the shape of the underlying Y-tree for the closure under right concatenation with regular sets and for the decidability of the problems of emptiness, finiteness, equivalence and co-emptiness. A sufficient condition is given for the decidability of the stability problem, in the deterministic case, while some undecidability results are proved in the nondeterministic case.
