Notes: Summary Fasting (48 h) results in dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) release both in adrenal gland and spleen, suggestive of an increase in the activity of these organs. Cold exposure (48 h) produces a dissociation of the, sympathoadrenal response. When both stimuli are simultaneously employed, the DBH response suggests the preponderance of the response to fasting. Plasma DBH is decreased in all groups studied, this could be due to its half-life and the splenic DBH depletion.

Notes: Abstract  The Holocene filling of the Tinto-Odiel Estuary comprises seven lithofacies over a Mio-Pliocene substrate. The sequence includes three system tracts: lowstand system (10 000 to 8700 years BP), transgressive system (8700 to 7000 years BP), and regressive system (7000 to Recent). Twenty sediment samples from the 50-m borehole were analyzed for their major components and minor element concentrations. Two multivariate analysis methods, principal component analysis and cluster analysis, were performed in the analytical data set to help visualize the sample clusters and the element associations. Samples corresponding to unpolluted, pre-mining sediments are clearly separated by cluster analysis, mainly as a result of the low content in sulphide-associated heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, As, Ag, and Pb. So, these sediments may be utilized as a background for geochemical analysis (bulk sample) in other adjacent estuaries, both in sandy and silty-clayey sediments. As a consequence of large-scale mining and smelting operations occurred since prehistoric times on the river banks, a rapid rise in the metal pollution was found in the upper 2.5 m of the natural filling, with values exceeding up to ten times the natural background levels. In addition, since the mid-1960s, large amounts of waste and pollutant effluents have been discharged from industries located around the estuary, increasing the heavy metal content in the last 0.3 m of the natural sedimentation.

Notes: Abstract The marine sponge Dysidea fragilis from El Mar Menor, a hypersaline coastal lagoon (Murcia, Spain), contains the furanosesquiterpenoid ent-furodysinin as the major secondary metabolite. D. fragilis emits a defensive white fluid when it is disturbed. Electron micrographs of this fluid revealed intact vesiculated cells together with other amorphous material. Dissociated cells are more rounded in shape but maintain the same ultrastructural features as cells observed in ultra-thin sections of the whole sponge. The defensive secretion is composed mainly of sponge cells with abundant light vesicles. Sometimes these light vesicles appear to open into the intercellular space; this correlates with surface blebs on these cells observed under scanning electron microscopy. The intracellular location of ent-furodysinin was confirmed by Erlich staining. In laboratory assays, we examined the role of ent-furodysinin as a feeding deterrent to generalist fish predators. It was isolated from D. fragilis and incorporated into a carrageenan-based artificial diet. The addition of ent-furodysinin to the artificial diet reduced feeding by the fish Thalassoma pavo. Similarly, fish did not feed on artificial diet above which defensive secretion of D. fragilis had been ejected with a small syringe.

Notes: Abstract Objective To compare the bronchodilating effect of a single drug, ipratropium bromide (IBr), with that of its combination with fenoterol (IBr+F). Design The study was triple blind and randomized. Setting Medical-surgical intensive care unit. Patients 12 patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) requiring mechanical ventilation for severe respiratory failure. Interventions Before administering each drug, peak airway pressure (Ppeak), end inspiratory pressure (Pei), resistive pressure (Pres), and auto positive — end expiratory pressure (auto-PEEP) were measured. Inspiratory system resistance (Rins) and dynamic respiratory system compliance (C) were calculated. Arterial pH and blood gas determinations were made. These measurements were repeated 60 min after administration of each therapeutic regimen. For ipratropium bromide alone the dose was 0.04 mg. When the combination of drugs was used, the doses were 0.04 mg for ipratropium bromide and 0.1 mg for fenoterol. Measurements and results With the combination of both drugs, all the pressures in the airway, as well as the auto-PEEP and the Rins were significantly reduced (p〈0.05) with respect to baseline values. With ipratropium bromide alone, no significant changes were observed either in the pressures or in the inspiratory resistance. No significant changes were observed either in the pH or blood gases with any of the treatments. The combination of both drugs produced significantly reduction in Pei and auto-PEEP when compared with ipratropium bromide alone. Conclusions The combination of both drugs is more effective than ipratropium bromide alone at the doses used in this study.

Notes: Summary It has been suggested that the urinary profile of porphyrins excreted by female patients with estrogen-induced porphyria cutanea tarda is peculiar in that heptacarboxylic porphyrin equals or exceeds uroporphyrin. The chromatographic pattern of urinary porphyrin excretion was studied in nine females with porphyria cutanea tarda precipitated by estrogens, 129 porphyric males, and nine females, whose porphyria was not hormone-induced. Both female porphyric groups showed absolutely the same urinary chromatographic pattern and looked quite similar to the pattern observed in male patients. None of our female porphyric patients, whether treated with estrogens or not, showed percentage values for the heptacarboxylic porphyrin higher or equal to the uroporphyrin values. Our results do not support the hypothesis that the profile of urinary porphyrin excretion found in estrogen-induced porphyria cutanea tarda is atypical.

Notes: Abstract Microwave surface resistance measurement constitutes one of the most advantageous procedures for the investigation and characterization of the new superconducting oxides. Keeping in mind that the bulk ceramic materials usually have cylindrical symmetry, a new automatic measuring system, based on a resonant cavity, has been developed with special emphasis on superconducting pellets. The resolution capability of our system is pointed out by measuring the surface resistance of YBCO and BSCCO samples.

Notes: Abstract The time dependence of the field-cooled susceptibility in polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3O7 has been studied in the temperature range 77–95 K. Field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibility measurements and its variation with the ac magnetic field are also reported. Measurements have been carried out by means of an inductive technique. Our fully automatic system allows us to measure the first data points of field-cooled susceptibility versus time from the beginning of the magnetic relaxation just after removing the field.

Notes: Abstract. FerroMagnetic Resonance (FMR) measurements of polycrystalline nickel ferrites at 11 GHz from 77 to 400 K have been carried out. The different contributions to the FMR linewidth have been studied by a computational technique based on the parameters previously obtained for single-crystal nickel ferrite. A new qualitative comparison between the FMR and disaccommodation measurements by means of the induced anisotropy formalism is presented.
