Notes: The influence of power and substrate temperature on the chemical composition of inductively coupled RF plasma-polymerized films of acrylonitrile was monitored by ESCA. At a substrate temperature of 20°C a minimum in nitrogen content as a function of power was observed for films deposited in the coil region. A maximum was observed for a substrate temperature of 150°C. When power was increased from 1 to ∼50 W a linear increase in nitrogen content was observed in the tail region at both substrate temperatures. A step function observed in the C1s and N1s core-level spectra is discussed in terms of extensive unsaturation being present in the films.

Notes: ESCA has been used to investigate the composition and structural features of plasma-polymerized 2,4,6-trifluoro-1,3,5-triazine. Polymer formation was studied as a function of power and post-polymerisation treatment. All the polymer films revealed an intense peak at a binding energy of ∼290.2 eV probably arising from groups. A high sensitivity towards hydrolysis was observed resulting in substantial loss of fluorine and increase in oxygen content of the plasma polymers.

Notes: ESCA was used to examine the structure and bonding of mercury-containing, plasma-polymerized perfluorobenzene. A maximum Hg:C stoichiometry, independent of distillation temperature and power but dependent on substrate temperature, was obtained. Comparison of the plasma polymers of perfluorobenzene and mercury-containing perflurobenzene formed as a function of power, revealed that the C1s structure of the latter system was not due to the level of mercury incorporated but to sensitized reactions that developed from energy absorption by the mercury in the gas phase.

Notes: 1-Fluoronaphthalene was plasma polymerized and its composition and structure, as a function of position, power, and temperature, were examined by ESCA. The F:C ratio of the deposited film was lower than that of the starting monomer both at room temperature and at 150°C. An asymmetry of the main C1s photoionization peak was noted. Plasmas were also excited in fluoronaphthalene/hydrogen mixtures where extensive fluorine elimination and hydrogen incorporation occurred. This gave direct evidence that the height of step function or asymmetry of the main C1s peak is related to the degree of saturation in the compound.

Notes: The surface aspects of plasma polymers derived from ferrocene, dimethylaminomethylferrocene, and vinylferrocene were studied by electron spectroscopy for chemical applications. From a consideration of the ESCA peak area ratios it is apparent that ferrocene and vinylferrocene maintain a carbon-to-iron ratio characteristic of the “monomer”, whereas dimethylaminomethylferrocene plasma polymer is richer in iron than its monomer.

Notes: Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) has been employed to follow the surface nitration of cellulose papers in nitric acid-water and nitric acid-dichloromethane mixes with the aim of: elucidating the identity of the nitrating species in these mixes and from comparison of surface and bulk degree of substitution (DOS) further understanding on the role that morphology plays in the nitration of cellulose in these mixes. In nitric acid, nitric acid-water and nitric acid-dichloromethane mixes, surface nitration was observed to be slow (cf. to that reported in mixed acids) and the concentration of nitronium ion was observed to be low (cf. to mixed acids). On the basis of these observations and from the results of kinetic experiments, reported herein, it is proposed that the nitronium ion, NO2+, is the important nitrating species of cellulose in these nitric acid mixes. Nitration in all but the most concentrated nitric acid-dichloromethane mixes produced equal surface and bulk DOS; however, nitration in pure nitric acid produced different surface and bulk DOS. The latter result implies that the heterogeneous nature of the nitration reaction can influence the DOS achieved.

Notes: The low temperature surface and bulk nitration of cellulose has been investigated by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), 13C-NMR and X-ray diffraction. Acid mix composition has been probed at room temperature and at low temperatures (0-20°C) by Raman spectroscopy. This multitechnique approach has been employed to elucidate the behavior of surface degree of substitution (DOS) with acid mix composition over a 40°C temperature range. The data obtained have prompted a reinterpretation of previously reported work. Surface “equilibrium DOS” is shown to be established within 1 s at all temperatures investigated. but, at lower temperatures (〉 5°C) the surface DOS as monitored by ESCA is observed to “dip” after immersion times of t 〈 5 s. This change in DOS is correlated with major structural changes in the fiber as observed by SEM. At low temperatures, e.g., -15°C, nitration is shown to be complete throughout the cellulose fiber after 10 h nitration. Solution state 13C-NMR is used to compare the nitrate ester substitution distribution in cellulose nitrates prepared from acid mixes of the same composition at different temperatures.
