Notes: Summary Standing (1973) and Murray (1975) have both found that the number of items retrieved from long-term memory is a power function of the number of items presented. The present research reports three further experiments designed to validate this power function: the law was found to be upheld in paired associates recognition (for four levels of meaningfulness); for free recall (with or without retrieval cues at presentation and/or recall); and for incidental and intentional free recall and recognition. Some data of Roberts (1972) were also found to be fitted by a power function. The discussion deals with power functions as compared with linear functions and also with the relationships between slopes and intercepts of power functions.

Notes: Summary Little is known about the epidemiology of cardiac disease in diabetic end-stage renal disease. We therefore prospectively followed a cohort of 433 patients who survived 6 months after the inception of dialysis therapy for an average of 41 months. Clinical and echocardiographic data were collected yearly. At baseline, diabetic patients (n = 116) had more echocardiographic concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (50 vs 38 %, p = 0.04), clinically diagnosed ischaemic heart disease (32 vs 18 %, p = 0.003) and cardiac failure (48 vs 24 %, p 〈 0.00 001) than non-diabetic patients (n = 317). After adjusting for age and sex, diabetic patients had similar rates of progression of echocardiographic disorders, and de novo cardiac failure, but higher rates of de novo clinically diagnosed ischaemic heart disease (RR 3.2, p = 0.0002), overall mortality (RR 2.3, p 〈 0.0001) and cardiovascular mortality (RR 2.6, p 〈 0.0001) than non-diabetic patients. Mortality was higher in diabetic patients following admission for clinically diagnosed ischaemic heart disease (RR 1.7, p = 0.05) and cardiac failure (RR 2.2, p = 0.0003). Among diabetic patients older age, left ventricular hypertrophy, smoking, clinically diagnosed ischaemic heart disease, cardiac failure and hypoalbuminaemia were independently associated with mortality. The excessive cardiac morbidity and mortality of diabetic patients seem to be mediated via ischaemic disease, rather than progression of cardiomyopathy while on dialysis therapy. Potentially remediable risk factors include smoking, left ventricular hypertrophy, and hypoalbuminaemia. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 1307–1312]

Notes: Objective To ascertain whether the determination of amniotic fluid interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations would be a useful clinical test in the management of women with preterm contractions.Setting The labour and delivery unit and the Fetal Diagnostic Centre at the University of Utah.Subjects Pregnant women at various stages of gestation in the third trimester.Design Amniotic fluid samples were collected from women experiencing one of four clinical scenarios: 1. term pregnancy, not in labour with no evidence of intrauterine infection; 2. normal term labour with no evidence of infection; 3. preterm labour with no evidence of infection and undelivered within one week of sampling; and 4. preterm labour and delivered within seven days of sample collection. Amniotic fluid was obtained by amniocentesis or at the time of amniotomy or hysterotomy. IL-6 in each specimen was determined by a specific rapid ELISA.Results Amniotic fluid IL-6 levels, given as mean (SEM) in the four groups of women listed were: 1. term pregnancy, not in labour: 20.9 (7.2) pg/ml (n= 60); 2. normal term labour with no infection: 554 (90.7) pg/ml (n= 46); 3. preterm labour with no evidence of infection, undelivered: 47.0 (17.2) pg/ml (n= 35); and 4. preterm labour, delivered: 456.7 (101.7) pg/ml (n= 40). There was no significant difference in the means of amniotic fluid IL-6 for the term labour and preterm labour delivered groups. In general, amniotic fluid IL-6 levels during term labour increased with advancing cervical dilation. There was no correlation of cervical dilation and amniotic fluid IL-6 levels in women having preterm delivery. Receiver-operator curves revealed optimal IL-6 levels for discrimination of labour at term to be 50 pg/ml and for preterm delivery to be 200 pg/ml.Conclusions IL-6 can readily be detected in the amniotic fluid of most women who are in active labour, regardless of gestational age. Our data suggest that amniotic fluid IL-6 determinations may be clinically useful in the management of preterm labour.

Notes: A new multilevel ground water monitoring system has been developed that uses custom-extruded flexible 1.6-inch (4.1 cm) outside-diameter (O.D.) multichannel HOPE tubing (referred to as Continuous Multichannel Tubing or CMT) to monitor as many as seven discrete zones within a single borehole in either unconsolidated sediments or bedrock. Prior to inserting the tubing in the borehole, ports are created that allow ground water to enter six outer pie-shaped channels (nominal diameter = 0.5 inch [1.3 cm]) and a central hexagonal center channel (nominal diameter = 0.4 inch [1 cm]) at different depths, facilitating the measurement of depth-discrete piezometric heads and the collection of depth-discrete ground water samples. Sand packs and annular seals between the various monitored zones can be installed using conventional tremie methods. Alternatively, bentonite packers and prepacked sand packs have been developed that are attached to the tubing at the ground surface, facilitating precise positioning of annular seals and sand packs. Inflatable rubber packers for permanent or temporary installations in bedrock aquifers are currently undergoing site trials. Hydraulic heads are measured with conventional water-level meters or electronic pressure transducers to generate vertical profiles of hydraulic head. Ground water samples are collected using peristaltic pumps, small-diameter bailers, inertial lift pumps, or small-diameter canister samplers. For monitoring hydrophobic organic compounds, the CMT tubing is susceptible to both positive and negative biases caused by sorption, desorption, and diffusion. These biases can be minimized by: (1) purging the channels prior to sampling, (2) collecting samples from separate 0.25-inch (0.64 cm) O.D. Teflon sampling tubing inserted to the bottom of each sampling channel, or (3) collecting the samples downhole using sampling devices positioned next to the intake ports. More than 1000 CMT multilevel wells have been installed in North America and Europe to depths up to 260 feet (79 m) below ground surface. These wells have been installed in boreholes created in unconsolidated sediments and bedrock using a wide range of drilling equipment, including sonic, air rotary, diamond-bit coring, hollow-stem auger, and direct push. This paper presents a discussion of three field trials of the system, demonstrating its versatility and illustrating the type of depth-discrete data that can be collected with the system.

Notes: In conjunction with an Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, breeding enhancement program, fecal samples were examined for the presence of helminth parasite products (eggs, larvae, and proglottids). Eighty-two samples were examined from four island groups in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands: 38 from Kure Atoll, 32 from French Frigate Shoals, 11 from Laysan Island, and one from Lisianski Island. Identified helminth products include those of Diphyllobothrium sp., D. cameroni, Contracaecum turgidum, Anisakis sp., Corynosoma rauschi, and Trematoda. In addition, eggs from Halarachne laysanae (Atari) were found in 3 samples. Eggs of C. turgidum were present in the highest percentage (〉64%) of samples from all locations. Eggs of Anisakis sp. and Trematoda are reported from this host for the first time.
