Notes: The Ruff–MKW boiling point method is used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures greater than 660 Pa (5 Torr). Samples are vaporized from a Ruff cell, which has a capillary exit, in the presence of an inert gas. Viscosity coefficients and gaseous interdiffusion coefficients may be determined also. This is a second study of the method using Cd(l) and Zn(l) as samples. For the first study with CsCl(l), see J. Chem. Phys. 81, 915 (1984). Vapor pressure data are in good agreement with previous data and gave a third-law ΔsubH0(298) for Cd(s) of 111.95±0.42 kJ/mol and for Zn(s) of 130.65±0.48 kJ/mol. Analyses of the diffusion coefficients gave atomic diameters of 4.06×10−10 m for Cd and 3.46×10−10 m for Zn; these values are somewhat larger than previously measured values. In these experiments when the equilibrium vapor pressures were greater than 13 000 Pa (100 Torr), the need to consider heat transfer from the furnace to the vaporizing sample was noted, i.e., sample cooling occured due to rapid vaporization. Validity of the MKW analysis was found.

Notes: Vaporization reactions for both Tl2O3(s) and a Tl superconductor sample, primarily Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3Oy(s) (Tl-2223), were determined. The vapor species were examined by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry at temperatures in the range 657 to 773 K for Tl2O3(s) and 672 to 836 K for Tl-2223. Additional experiments with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) equipment were performed. In both cases of vaporization of Tl2O3 and Tl-2223, the vapor species were concluded to be Tl2O(g) and O2(g). Vapor pressures were measured. For Tl2O3(s), ΔvapH0 (298.15 K) was measured as 320.4±6 kJ/mol. The activity of Tl2O3 in the Tl-2223 superconductor was measured as 0.0044±0.001 at 750 K. A measure of the stabilization of Tl2O3 in the Tl-2223 superconductor is given by μ(Tl2O3,sc)−μ(Tl2O3,pure)=−33.84±3.0 kJ/mol.

Notes: The vapor pressures of Cu in equilibrium with YBa2Cu3O6.24 were measured as a function of temperature by the Knudsen effusion method using a quadrupole mass spectrometer as the detector. The data were fitted to ln [P(Cu)/bar]=(−66104±4485)(1/T)+(35.360±3.869). The activity of Cu [in YBa2Cu3O6.24(s) ] was calculated as the ratio of the above equilibrium pressure divided by the vapor pressure of pure Cu(s). From the activities, relative chemical potentials were calculated. The vapor pressure of Cu from the superconductor intersects the vapor pressure of Cu from pure Cu(s) at 1290±20 K, which indicates that the superconductor decomposes to metallic Cu at temperatures greater than 1290 K.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess the positive and negative predictive accuracy of the Stress-Cath® (Continental Pharmaceuticals, UK) as compared to single channel cystometry and a standing cough stress test in the diagnosis of genuine stress incontinence. Twenty-eight women were evaluated for incontinence by single-channel cystometry and a standing cough stress test at cystometric capacity. These same 28 women also underwent a modified fluid bridge test, using a device known as Stress-Cath®. This catheter is able to detect urine in the proximal urethra. The data demonstrated that the Stress-Cath® was 81.3% sensitive and 83.3% specific for the diagnosis of genuine stress incontinence as determined by the simplified urodynamic evaluation. The Stress-Cath® had a positive predictive rate of 86.6% and a negative predictive rate of 76.9%. Its false positive rate was 16.7% and false-negative rate was 18.7%. The Stress-Cath® is relatively insensitive in diagnosing genuine stress incontinence.

Notes: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the risk of detrusor hyperreflexia in women with Parkinson’s disease. Fourteen women with Parkinson’s disease and urinary complaints were compared with 28 age-matched women who had urinary complaints and no neurologic disease (controls). Demographic data, symptomatology, multichannel urodynamic indices and rates of diagnoses were compared between the two groups using the Mantel–Haenszel matched odds ratio (OR) and the Kruskal–Wallis test. The mean age of the women was 73.3 years. Those with Parkinson’s disease had an increased rate of detrusor hyperreflexia (92.8% vs. 50.0%, OR 13, 95% confidence interval 1.6,228, P=0.02) which occurred at lower volumes (150.0 ml vs. 225.0 ml, P=0.01), and a lower maximum cystometric capacity (240.0 ml vs. 335.0 ml, P=0.02) compared to the control group. It was concluded that women with Parkinson’s disease and lower urinary tract complaints have a lower maximum cystometric capacity and a higher rate of detrusor hyperreflexia at lower bladder volumes.

Notes: Corona discharge (CD) treated polyethylene films were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a variety of chemical derivatization techniques. The composition of the CD-treated surfaces were found to be relatively unaffected by aging at temperatures between 70 and 80°F. Ink adhesion testing of films treated under progressively more serve conditions indicated the efficiency of adhesion varied directly with the severity of treatment. Derivatization of CDtreated polyethylene films with pentaflurophenylhydrazine (PFPH) resulted in the formation of a stable hydrazone complex. The PFPH complex extends the detection limit for enolizable carbonyl groups ca. eight-fold and provides relative quantitation of the number of these groups on variously treated polyethylenes. Formation of the hydrazone complex destroyed ink adhesion, indicating that the complex had blocked the site responsible for chemical bonding to the ink. Adhesion of water-soluble printing inks to CD-treated polyethylene is a direct consequence of hydrogen bonding between enolic hydroxyls on the polymer surface and carbonyl groups of the ink.
