    Notes: Summary We recorded spinal cord evoked potentials (SCEPs) and spinal somatosensory evoked potentials (spinal SEPs) in 30 operations following stimulation of the epidural spinal cord and the peripheral nerve, respectively, to compare their feasibility as an intraoperative technique for spinal cord monitoring. SCEPs produced quicker responses and had larger amplitudes with simpler waveforms. SCEPs could reflect residual function of the pathological spinal cord and predict the postoperative clinical outcome, findings which are not observed with spinal SEPs. Moreover, SCEPs had a much higher sensitivity to spinal cord insult. Therefore, we conclude that the SCEPs were more appropriate indicator than the spinal SEPs as an intra-operative monitoring method for spinal cord function.

    Notes: Summary Folliculo-stellate cells (FS cells) in 40 pituitary adenomas and portions of anterior pituitary adjacent to the tumor in 26 cases were investigated immunohistochemically, using polyclonal antisera to S-100 protein (S-100) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The objective was to clarify the histological behavior of the FS cells. In most pituitary adenomas there were few or no S-100-or GFAP-positive cell, in comparison with numerous positive cells in the parts of the adenohypophyses compressed by adenomas. However, positive FS cells were observed in some types of pituitary adenomas. Growth hormone and prolactin producing adenomas frequently contained significant amounts of FS cells. In non-functioning adenomas, an unique case of FS cell adenoma was present. The adenoma was composed mainly of FS cells and immature glandular cells. The FS cells were sometimes located around follicles containing Periodic acid Schiff-positive material. Therefore, the FS cell adenoma is characterized by S-100- and GFAP-positive FS cells and PAS-positive follicles. In this type of adenoma, FS cells seemed to be the main proliferating component. In parts of the adenohypophyses adjacent to the adenomas, GFAP0-positive FS cells were numerous. In the pathological conditions FS cells may possess the potential of reactive proliferation.

    Notes: Summary Eighteen cases of intracranial meningioma that received preoperative or post-operative irradiation with60Cobalt or Linac have been reviewed. Eight patients received preoperative irradiation because their tumours were very large, hypervascular, and surgically not readily accessible. Two angioblastic meningiomas of the haemangiopericytoma type responded well to irradiation and were easily extirpated. One of these developed a local recurrence and metastases to the lungs and liver nine years after surgery. The recurrent intracranial tumour and nodules in the lungs responded well to irradiation. The other six cases of meningiomas of meningothelial, transitional, or haemangioblastoma types, did not improve clinically or radiologically after irradiation. Ten cases received postoperative irradiation because their tumours were only partially removed or were histologically malignant. In all cases irradiation was most effective for recurrent tumours of the haemangiopericytoma type. This study indicates that irradiation is useful in tumours of the haemangiopericytoma type as an adjunct to surgery or for palliation in advanced stages. Irradiation may have been effective in supressing recurrences in two cases of other types of meningioma, although the number of cases is too small to allow any definite conclusion.

    Notes: Objectives:To determine the effect of water fluoride concentration on the fluoride profile across the entire thickness of the cementum and root dentine of human permanent anterior teeth in adults. Subjects:Twenty-eight human permanent anterior teeth from individuals aged from 30 to over 60 years were studied. Setting:Teeth were obtained from a natural high-fluoride area (West Hartlepool, UK; 1.0–1.3 ppm F in drinking water, WHP) and the other from a non-fluoridated naturally low fluoride area (Leeds, UK; 0.1 ppm F in drinking water, LDS). Design:Cementum and root dentine were sampled using an abrasive micro-sampling technique from the cementum surface to the pulpal surface of root dentine. Results:Fluoride concentration was higher in tooth roots (the cementum and dentine) taken from the naturally fluoridated area (WHP) than from the non-fluoridated area (LDS). Age and average fluoride concentration showed a positive correlation in WHP dentine, middle region of the root (r = 0.78, P 〈 0.001) and in the apical region of the root (r = 0.67, P 〈 0.05). WHP cementum had the strongest fluoride concentration correlation with age in the cervical region of the root (r = 0.67, P 〈 0.01). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the area (water fluoride content), age and number of years lived in the area combined with total age were significant. Conclusions: The fluoride content of cementum and root dentine in adult residents is related to fluoride content in drinking water.

    Notes: We examined the site specificity of fluoride (F) distribution in human dental calculus. Teeth with supra- and subgingival calculus were obtained from patients who resided in non-fluoridated areas in Japan and China. Sequential layers of the dental calculus (30 μm thick) were abraded by an abrasive micro-sampling technique and fluoride and phosphorus in the powdered samples were analyzed. Fluoride concentrations were highest in the outer, lowest in the middle and intermediate in the inner layers of dental calculus in general. In the outermost layers fluoride concentrations were highest in calculus found near the tooth cervix both in supra- and subgingival calculus. Fluoride concentrations decreased markedly toward the apical region in subgingival calculus. while it did not change toward the incisal or occlusal region in supragingival calculus. In the inner layers, fluoride concentrations in both supra- and subgingival calculus were not affected by position on the teeth. Fluoride concentrations in subgingival calculus near the apex were lower than in supragingival calculus near the incisal or occlusal region. It was concluded that the fluoride concentrations differ in different regions of dental calculus, probably due to their different mechanisms of formation.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken to reveal the magnesium distribution in human bone. Sixty human ribs, obtained from subjects aged 10–80 years of age, were used. Transverse sections were prepared from the middle region of the human ribs. Adjacent sections were ground to a thickness of about 1000 μm. One section was used for magnesium determination by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and the other was used for analysis with X-ray microanalysis. Thirty micron thick samples were abraded continuously from the periosteal and the endosteal surfaces by abrasive microsampling, as previously described by Weatherell et al. [3]. Results showed that magnesium concentrations were higher in both the periosteal and endosteal surfaces and did not change with age in general, although it tended to be higher among teenagers and lower over 80 years old.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this work was to explore the reduction of fluoride concentrations in the skeleton after stopping experimental fluoride administration. Fluoride was administered to the rats at varying doses (0, 50, 100 ppm in drinking water) and for different lengths of time (4, 13, 25 weeks). A series of fluoride concentrations across the full thickness of humerus, parietal bone, and vertebra arch in rats were measured by means of an abrasive micro-sampling technique. The distribution profiles of fluoride from periosteal to endosteal surfaces, which were apparently related to the histological structure of these bones, were U shaped in the humerus, V shaped in the parietal bone, and W shaped in the vertebra arch. The average fluoride concentrations in the bones increased significantly with each increasing dose and length of fluoride administration. The relative increments were similar between the different regions or the different bones. After stopping fluoride administration, on the other hand, the relative reduction of the average fluoride concentrations in the bones were 30–100%. They were greatly related to the length after stopping fluoride administration and the dose and length of fluoride administration, but also dependent upon the type of bone and the region examined.

    Notes: Abstract. Sixty-two human teeth, obtained from subjects aged 11 to 80 years, were used to determine the magnesium and fluoride concentration and distribution with age in human cementum. Transverse sections were prepared from the root region of teeth. Samples, each 30 μm thick, were abraded in sequence from the cementum surface and the cemento-dentine junction by an abrasive micro-sampling technique. Magnesium concentrations were lower in the cementum surface, and increased towards the cemento-dentine junction (CDJ), while fluoride concentrations were higher in cementum surfaces and tended to decrease towards CDJ. Fluoride distribution patterns were similar to that reported earlier while average fluoride concentration increased with age, however, either no change or decreasing tendencies were observed with magnesium.
