    Notes: This study was aimed to investigate the effect of grinding, sandblasting by alumina andSiC, and heat treatment on the phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia on thesurface of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) and zirconia/alumina nanocompositestabilized with cerium oxide (Ce-TZP/Al2O3 nanocomposite). The monoclinic phase content of bothmaterials increased with the grinding and the sandblasting, while it decreased with the heattreatment. The monoclinic content sequentially increased with the sandblasting and decreased withthe heat treatment to each specific value. The SiC-sandblasting produced the larger monocliniccontent than alumina-sandblasting. Furthermore, the content changes of the nanocomposite werelarger than Y-TZP

    Notes: The effect of sandblasting and heat treatment on biaxial flexure strengths of thezirconia/alumina nanocomposite stabilized with cerium oxide (Ce-TZP/Al2O3 nanocomposite) wasevaluated in comparison to that of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP). Thedisc-shaped specimens of the nanocomposite and Y-TZP were sandblasted with 70)m aluminapowder. After sandblasting, half of the specimens were heated at 1000˚C for 5 min. The biaxialflexure strengths of Y-TZP were independent on the sandblasting, but decreased with the heattreatment. On the other hand, the biaxial flexure strength of the nanocomposite increased with thesandblasting and significantly decreased with the heat treatment. The content of monoclinic ZrO2 ofY-TZP and the nanocomposite increased with the sandblasting pressure and dramatically decreasedwith the heat treatment. These results suggest that the stress-induced transformation from tetragonalto monoclinic of the nanocomposite occurs more easily than Y-TZP

    Notes: Summary ¶ Objective. The authors describe early experience in the use of bioabsorbable fixation devices for cranial reconstruction of paediatric craniosynostosis patients.  Methods. Three patients, individually respectively presenting sagittal synostosis, metopic synostosis, and clover leaf skull deformity, underwent cranial reconstruction using poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) plates and screws. The patients ranged in age from 2 to 10 months at the time of surgery. The postoperative clinical follow-up ranged from 16 to 18 months. All patients showed satisfactory wound healing without signs of infection or local inflammation. The plates provided satisfactory fixation and were not palpable through the skin after 16 to 18 postoperative months.  Conclusion. Our experience demonstrated the efficacy of PLLA bioabsorbable plates and screws for cranial reconstruction in cases of infant craniosynostosis. Prospective studies and longer follow-up of a larger number of patients is desirable for confirmation of these findings.

    Notes: Summary  Objective. A series of 21 patients with tuberculum sellae meningioma who received surgical treatment is reported.  Patients and Methods. All 9 females and 12 males (mean age 49 years) presented visual disturbances of varying degrees in either one or both eyes. Eighteen of the tumours were less than 3 cm in size, and 3 were larger. Tumour resection of uniform surgical technique was performed in all cases. Following a bicoronal scalp incision, bifrontal craniotomy combined with removal of the orbital rim bilaterally was performed. The frontal dura was opened bilaterally, and the most anterior portion of the superior sagittal sinus was transected. Bifrontal retraction and arachnoid dissection along the proximal olfactory tracts brought the tumour into view. Additional dissection of the interhemispheric fissure extended the operative field to the anterior communicating artery. The anterior skull base was drilled out to resect the basal part of the tumour. In all cases, the optic canal and sphenoid sinus, and additionally in some cases the ethmoid sinus were opened. The tumour uniformly extended inferomedially to the optic nerve, and direct visualization of this portion of the tumour was possible with our approach. The opened paranasal sinuses were reconstructed with adipose tissue harvested from the patient's abdomen and the pericranial flap.  Results. In all patients, total or almost total resection of the tumour was accomplished. Postoperatively, visual function was improved in 11 patients, was unchanged in 8, and worsened in 2. There were no operative deaths. Cerebrospinal fluid leakage was occurred in two patients but could be conservatively managed. In a mean 3-year follow-up, tumour recurrence was observed in only one patient who presented a malignant histology.  Conclusions. We are confident that our surgical approach has great clinical value in surgical resection of tuberculum sellae meningioma. The good accessibility to a tumour extending inferomedially to the optic nerve should, in particular, be stressed.

Si è trovato che la larga banda di emissione a circa 1.9 eV è composta di tre bande con picchi a 2.16, 1.98 e 1.76 eV a 4.8 K. Queste bande sono dovute a transizioni da libero a legato o da donatore ad accettore. Si è trovata una nuova banda di emissione con picco a 2.38 eV. Questa banda mostra che l'intensità di picco dipende marcatamente dalla posizione nel cristallo ed è correlata a centri localizzati. Si discute l'origine dei centri.
    Abstract: Резюме Измеряется и анализируется фотолюминесценция слоистых соединений CdInGaS4. Обнаружено, что широкая полоса излучения около 1.95 эВ состоит из трех зон 2.16, 1.98 и 1.76 эВ при 4.8 К. Эти зоны связаны с переходами из свободного состояния в связанное или от донора к акцептору. Мы обнаружили новую полосу излучения вблизи 2.38 эВ. Эта полоса имеет интенсивность, которая зависит от положения в кристалле и связана с локализованными центрами. Обсуждается природа этих центров.
    Notes: Summary The photoluminescence of the layered compound CdInGaS4 was measured and analysed. The broad emission band at about 1.95 eV was found to be composed of three bands peaking at 2.16, 1.98 and 1.76 eV at 4.8K. These bands are due to free-to-bound or donor-to-acceptor transitions. We have found a new emission band peaking at 2.38 eV. This band shows that peak intensity markedly depends on the position in the crystal and is related to localized centres. The origin of the centres is discussed.

    Notes: The polarized reflection spectra of single crystals of PDA-CPDO [poly-1-(N-carbazolyl)penta-1, 3-diyn-5-ol], which are π conjugated between the side groups and the main chain, have been measured in the photon energy region from 1.38 to 32 eV for the first time with a polarized synchrotron radiation source. Absorption spectra have been calculated using the Kramers–Kronig relation. Transitions in the visible absorption spectrum, which have been previously attributed to an interband transition in a similar polydiacetylene, have been found to be highly dichroic with respect to the direction along the polymer backbone. The absorption spectrum in this region reveals two broad (ΔE(approximately-greater-than)0.4 eV) peaks at 1.9 and 2.7 eV with an almost equal absorption coefficient of 7.5×104 cm−1. The spectral features in the range from 3 to 8 eV result from electronic transitions of the carbazolyl side groups. A single broad (ΔE∼10 eV) absorption band observed at 18 eV is due to either transitions of σ electrons to higher σ* or π* states of the carbazolyl group, or to ionization processes.
