Notes: Abstract Autoregulation is the capacity of an organ system to maintain organ blood flow constant in response to changes in arterial blood pressure (BP). The current study was carried out to investigate the effect of age on autoregulation of cochlear blood flow (CBF) in mice. CBF was measured using a laser-Doppler flowmeter while BP was increased by angiotensin 11 injections and decreased by exsanguination in 2-month-old, 10-month-old and 18-month-old CBA mice. Autoregulation of CBF was significantly weaker in the 2-month-old mice when compared to the older mice. Although CBF autoregulation was weaker in the 18-month-old mice compared to the 10-month-old mice, this difference was not statistically significant. These results suggest that autoregulation changes with maturation and age. Findings are discussed in relationship to the possible development of presbycusis.

Notes: Summary Lysine-rich proteinoids in aqueous solution catalyze the formation of peptides from free amino acids and ATP. This catalytic activity is not found in acidic proteinoids, even though the latter contain some basic amino acid. The pH optimum for the synthesis is about 11, but is appreciable below 8 and above 13. Temperature data indicate an optimum at 20°C or above, with little increase in rate to 60°C. Pyrophosphate can be used instead of ATP, with lesser yields resulting. The ATP-aided syntheses of peptides in aqueous solution occur with several types of proteinous amino acid.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a long echo-train-length 3D fast spin-echo (3D-FSE) sequence in visualizing the inner ear structures. Ten normal ears and 50 patient ears were imaged on a 1.5T MR unit using a head coil. Axial high-resolution T2-weighted images of the inner ear and the internal auditory canal (IAC) were obtained in 15 min. In normal ears the reliability of the visualization for the inner ear structures was evaluated on original images and the targeted maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of the labyrinth. In ten normal ears, 3D surface display (3D) images were also created and compared with MIP images. On the original images the cochlear aqueduct, the vessels in the vicinity of the IAC, and more than three branches of the cranial nerves were visualized in the AIC in all the ears. The visibility of the endolympathic duct was 80%. On the MIP images the visibility of the three semicircular canals, anterior and posterior ampulla, and of more than two turns of the cochlea was 100%. The MIP images and 3D images were almost comparable. The visibility of the endolymphatic duct was 80% in normal ears and 0% in the affected ears of the patients with Meniere's disease (p 〈 0.01). In one patient ear a small intracanalicular tumor was depicted clearly. In conclusion, the long echo train length T2-weighted 3D-FSE sequence enables the detailed visualization of the tiny structures of the inner ear and the IAC within a clinically acceptable scan time. Furthermore, obtaining a high contrast between the soft/bony tissue and the cerebrospinal/endolymph/perilymph fluid would be of significant value in the diagnoses of the pathologic conditions around the labyrinth and the IAC.

Notes: Summary The incidence of Martin-Gruber anastomosis was studied. Anatomical dissection of 108 cadaveric arms was performed. The Martin-Gruber anastomosis was found in 23 arms. This anastomosis was classified into four types: Type Ia: Communication between the anterior interosseous and the ulnar nn. (n=13), Type Ib: Communication between the median and ulnar nn. (n=1), Type II: Communication between muscular branches of the flexor digitorum profundus m. (n=8), Type III: Combination of Type Ia or Ib and Type II (n=1). The incidence of Martin-Gruber anastomosis was found to be significantly higher in the present study than in previous studies.

Notes: The short-range-order (SRO) parameters of disordered Au4Mn alloy were determined from an analysis of the X-ray diffuse scattering with the use of Borie & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 198-201] separation techniques. On the basis of the observed SRO parameters the local Mn atom arrangement in the f.c.c. lattice was constructed using a computer simulation method. The Mn atoms in the SRO state were found to form a three-dimensional irregular network which is linked mainly by linear chain segments along the [100] directions and also with nearest-neighbour relations. The Mn atom arrangement is the first example to show the structure expected from a random spin system with a concentration gradient. The ferromagnetic properties of this state can be well understood on the basis of the structure.
