Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Fifty-eight meningiomas were studied histochemically for the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatase, unspecific esterase, a number of oxidative enzymes and phosphorylase. 2. The meningiomas in general contain rich alkaline phosphatase and phosphorylase, moderate oxidative enzymes and acid phosphatase. Esterase is demonstrated only sparsely. 3. There was a close correlation between the appearance of alkaline phosphatase and the presence of calcification. The role of this enzyme in the process of the calcification is discussed. 4. A group of meningiomas, which is signed as “rapidly growing”, reveals an enzymatic pattern strikingly different from the others. The tumorcells of this group show no alkaline phosphatase, less phosphorylase and acid phosphatase. On the contrary, the activity of esterase and oxidative enzymes is stronger.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The localization of DPNH- and TPNH-diaphorase, of SD, MDH, LDH, IDH, GDH and ADH has been studied in the human cerebellum and in the cerebella of several mammalia. The results of the reactions are rather uniform. In the molecular layer, in the Purkinje cells, in the glial satellite cells, in the „glomeruli cerebellosi” and in the central nuclei of cerebellum the reactions are most strongly positive. The differences in the intensity of the reactions for the various enzymes present in these morphological structures are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. This paper presents experimental evidence that an aromatic compound that has a quadrupole moment locates in a polar headgroup region in the lipid membranes, but not in a membrane interior hydrophobic region, and discusses correlation to the site of action of benzocaine and butamben on sodium channels. The 2H NMR spectra of benzocaine-d4, benzocaine-d5, butamben-d4, and butamben-d9 in the model membranes were observed. The 2H NMR spectra of perdeuterated palmitic acid and selectively deuterated palmitic acids at C2, C3, C5, C6, C9, or C10, which were inserted into the lipid membranes, were also observed. The phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and liquid mixtures composed of PS, PC, and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), which contain or do not contain cholesterol, were employed. A moment analysis was applied to the 2H NMR spectra of palmitic-d31 acid. An order parameter, S CD , for each carbon segment was calculated from the observed quadruple splitting. We concluded that in the lipid mixture containing cholesterol, the aromatic rings of benzocaine and butamben locate around the glycerol moiety of the lipids and that when there exists no cholesterol, they locate a little more inside from the headgroup region, directing, in both cases, their amino groups upward (polar region) and the ethyl and butyl groups downward (hydrophobic region). These data cast a question on the site of action of the neutral local anesthetics in the sodium channels.

Notes: Optical nonlinearity of a sputtered SiO2 film containing CdSe microcrystallites with an average diameter of 15 A(ring) is measured by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) experiments. An effective nonlinear cross section σeff of 1.4×10−16 cm2 is obtained. The DFWM signal as a function of the probe delay time shows biexponential behavior with a fast decay time of 10 ps and a slow decay time of 60 ps, which give fast and slow carrier recombination times as 20 ps and 120 ps. The third-order susceptibility ||χ(3)|| is estimated to be 1.3×10−8 esu. The photodarkening and laser annealing effects which are serious problems for device applications are not observed.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1. Es wird über den histochemischen Nachweis von alkalischer und saurer Phosphatase, unspezifischer Esterase, mehreren oxydativen Enzymen (DPNH-D, TPNH-D, LDH, IDH-TPN, IDH-DPN, GDH, SDH, MDH, ADH) sowie Phosphorylase an 114 Gliomen (17 Oligodendrogliome, 23 Spongioblastome, 36 Astrocytome, 38 Glioblastome) berichtet. 2.
