Notes: The structural and electrical properties of as grown multicrystalline (mc) solar silicon have been characterized with special emphasis on the ingot's edge regions. For this purpose a vertical cross section of an mc-Si Bridgman ingot was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), laser scattering tomography (LST), lateral photovoltage scanning (LPS), infrared microscopy and microwave detected photoconductivity decay (&PCD). Images of the distribution of dislocations, grain boundaries, precipitates, impurities (O, N, C) and the minority charge carrier lifetime were obtained, partly differentiating the defects by their electrical activity. In particular the LPS method displays dopant striations indicating the shape of the phase boundary. Deviations of the phase boundary from a slightly convex shape in the middle of the ingot to a concave one in the vicinity of the side walls could be observed. The existence of an horizontal temperature gradient deduced from this shape is the reason for convection in the melt. The influence on the concentration profiles of interstitial oxygen and the correlation with the minority charge carrier lifetime are discussed

Notes: Summary The authors studied retrospectively 23 recurrent meningiomas of a total series of 277 intracranial meningiomas operated upon in the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Würzburg, between 1983 and 1989. All tumours were diagnosed by CT scan or MRI and operated upon using modern neurosurgical operation technology such as CUSA, Neodym-YAG-laser and if necessary operating microscope. Age, sex and tumour site could not be demonstrated as an influencing factor of tumour recurrence. Histological subtype and cellular criteria (mitoses, nuclear pleomorphism, focal necrosis) also were not predictive for tumour recurrence in the individual case. We found longer recurrence-free intervals after complete tumour removal (Simpson's grade I or II) than after subtotal tumour excision (Simpson's grade III or IV), but this tendency was not statistically significant. Obviously the analysed factors especially histomorphological criteria and surgical grading do not reflect the total biological behaviour of recurrent meningiomas. Further studies on growth kinetics and tumours metabolism may help to solve this problems.

Notes: Summary We report on the progression of myopathology by comparing two biopsies from a patient with a Kearns-Sayre-Syndrome. The first biopsy was taken in 1979 and showed 10% ragged-red fibers. Myopathic changes were slight including internal nuclei and fiber splitting in 10% of the fibers. Electron microscopy revealed typical mitochondrial abnormalities with regard to number and shape. In 1989 a second biopsy was performed for an extended analysis of mitochondrial DNA. This time less than 5% of all fibers were ragged-red. Severe myopathic changes could be detected which so far has rarely been reported in mitochondrial cytopathy.

Notes: Abstract We report a hereditary muscle disorder with features of inclusion body myositis (IBM) in two adult sisters with slowly progressive asymmetrical muscle weakness. The findings of light microscopic and ultrastructural investigations of muscle biopsy specimens were consistent with a diagnosis of IBM. Both patients improved and stabilized on immunosuppressive treatment with corticosteroids and azathioprine. This differentiates our patients from other sporadic and familial cases of IBM. Clinical and histological features are described and compared with those of other previously reported families with IBM.

Notes: Abstract The invasion of intestinal tissue by Yersinia enterocolitica was studied after infection of mice with plasmid-bearing or with plasmidless strains of serotype 08 and 03. Within the first 15 h of infection each strain colonized the mouse ileum to the same extent, indicating that the initial binding and invasion are not plasmid dependent. This conclusion is supported by the finding that the plasmidless and the plasmid-bearing Yersiniae (serotype 08) colonize the ileum in a quantitatively similar, dose-dependent manner. The data show that the virulence of Yersiniae depends primarily on their ability to survive and to proliferate within the tissue. This character was expressed by the plasmid-bearing 08 strain, but not by the plasmidless 08 and 03 strain nor by the plasmid-bearing 03 strain. An orally induced rabbit antiserum was used to identify plasmid-coded antigens (relative molecular masses=47, 45 and 42 kDa), which are expressed in vivo by the plasmid-bearing 08 strain, but not by the three other strains investigated. These antigens may be crucial for virulence of the 08 strain.

Notes: Summary Steroid receptor binding activity was evaluated in specimens of 28 human cerebral meningiomas using a dextran coated charcoal (DCC) assay. Oestrogen receptor (ER) binding activity at significant levels (〉 10 fmol/mg protein) could be detected only in three postmenopausal females (11% positive cases) at low levels. Positive progesterone receptor (PR) binding was detected in eighteen of the twenty-eight analysed meningioma tissues (64% positive cases). A significantly higher level of PR in male than in female patients could be demonstrated. The degree of peritumoural oedema could be evaluated from CT scans. There was no significant correlation between lack and amount of peritumoural oedema and quantity of cytosolic PR binding activity. Therefore we conclude, that peritumoural oedema is related to other factors and a possible role of PR activity in development of peritumoural oedema and growth control of meningiomas could not be demonstrated.

Notes: Laser scattering tomography (LST) and band-to-band photoluminescence (PL) are applied for supporting a MEMS process optimization. Process wafers are based on magnetic CZ grown silicon material. LST allows the characterization of number-size distributions of oxygen precipitates in various stages of the process flow. Precipitation is shown to be affected by the design of high-temperature anneal post initial oxidation. PL gives useful information on relative concentration level and radial distribution of recombination centers within process wafers. The initial oxidation leads to significant reduction of recombination centers. The combined LST/PL information enables valuable conclusions towards process optimization

Notes: Background Focal hyperhidrosis is a common condition mostly confined to the axillae, palms and soles. In some individuals, predominantly men, increased sweating of the forehead may be the major complaint and may interfere with the person’s quality of life. Botulinum toxin A has been shown to be a very effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis of the axillae and palms. Objectives To assess the response in 10 men suffering from frontal hyperhidrosis treated with botulinum toxin A. Methods Botulinum toxin A Botox® was injected at multiple sites evenly distributed over the forehead (mean dose 86 mouse units) . Results The mean ± SEM amount of sweat was significantly reduced, 4 weeks after treatment, from 173·8 ± 38·6 mg min−1 to 53·7 ± 17·6 mg min−1. The effect lasted at least 5 months in nine of the 10 patients. All patients subjectively judged the treatment as very effective. Minor side-effects included painful injections and a transient weakness of forehead muscles without ptosis. Conclusions In this study, we provide evidence that botulinum toxin A is an effective and safe treatment for frontal hyperhidrosis.
