Notes: Abstract Vertical distribution, chlorophylla (chla) and phaeopigment concentrations in the gut, and natural nitrogen isotope ratio (δ 15N) were investigated for pelagic amphipodsThemisto japonica (Bovallius) collected from the Sea of Japan in July 1987. Differences in diel vertical migration behavior were clearly observed between small and largeT. japonica. Many small (〈5 mm body length) amphipods appeared in the phytoplankton-rich shallow layers. Their gut pigment concentrations were higher (mean 0.52 ± 0.15µg chla g−1 amphipod) than those of large amphipods (mean 0.33±0.14µg g−1); this implies that the amphipods fed on a large amount of phytoplankton during the early stage of life. Theδ 15N values of small amphipods were lower (5.7 to 6.3‰) than those of large amphipods (6.8 to 11.7‰), reflecting the lower trophic level of small amphipods compared to large ones. Theδ 15N values for small amphipods were similar to those of herbivorous zooplankton. The amphipods' feeding behavior thus changes from herbivorous to carnivorous as they grow.

Notes: Abstract The larvae of Euphausia nana Brinton in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, Central Japan, are described and illustrated. The furcilia stage is separated into six stages on the basis of the form of the pleopods and the number of terminal telson spines. Furcilia I, no pleopod or non-setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia II, nonsetose and setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia III, five pairs of setose pleopods and seven terminal telson spines. Furcilia IV, five pairs of setose pleopods and five terminal telson spines. Furcilia V, five pairs of setose pleopods and three terminal telson spines. Furcilia VI, five pairs of setose pleopods and one terminal telson spine. Segmentation of the antennal endopod and mandible palp occurred at the furcilia V stage. The dominant forms of early furcilia larvae of E. nana differed during different seasons of the year. The total lengths of calyptopis III and furcilia I to VI larvae also showed seasonal changes; they were largest in May and smallest from September to December.

Notes: Abstract The number, size, and carbon and nitrogen contents of eggs in the pouches of a euphausiid crustacean, Nematoscelis difficilis Hansen, were examined. A clear linear relationship exists between the number of eggs in the pouch and the body weight of the maternal euphausiid. The eggs are not spherical in shape, and the size of eggs is greater in larger egg masses. The carbon content of the egg masses (50.2%) is higher than that of the bodies (40.7%). The carbon: nitrogen ratio (C/N) is also higher in the egg masses than in the bodies of euphausiids. The carbon content of the eggs is equivalent to 28.4% of the body carbon, the nitrogen content to 19.2% of the body nitrogen.

Notes: Abstract Vertical distributions of the larval stages of Euphausia nana Brinton and E. similis G. O. Sars in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, Central Japan were studied. Most of the metanauplius larvae of E. nana occurred between 25 and 80 m depth, and they were found at greater depths than the eggs and calyptopis larvae. The nauplii and metanauplii of e. similis were mainly found between 50 and 100 m depth, and they also occurred deeper than the eggs and calyptopes. The larvae of the two species from calyptopis I demonstrate diurnal vertical migration. However, this phenomenon was not clear in the season (March) when a seasonal thermocline was absent. Calyptopes and fruciliae of E. similis occurred deeper and migrated over greater vertical distances than those of E. nana. The distance of migration of furcilia I larvae of E. similis was estimated to be about 200 m.

Notes: Abstract A typical subarctic copepod,Neocalanus cristatus, occurred in the mesopelagic layer (500 to 1000 m) in Sagami Bay, central Japan, throughout the year. Specimens were collected from 1982 to 1986. A small number of adult females were distributed from 800 to 900 m only, but no adult males were collected. This species appeared to be abundant in April and August, when intermediate Oyashio water flowed strongly into Sagami Bay. Mean prosome lengths of copepodite stages IV and V and adults were 4.33, 6.87 and 6.87 mm, respectively. The condition factor [wet wt/(prosome length)3 × 100] of copepodite stage V did not vary remarkably, and mean values ranged from 4.7 to 5.0. Prosome length, body weight and condition factor ofN. cristatus collected from Sagami Bay were smaller than those of copepods in the northern North Pacific.N. cristatus transported from the north cannot molt to adult stages (except for those originating in mesopelagic waters) due to the adverse environmental conditions in Sagami Bay; instead, they die in the mesopelagic layer and sink to the bathypelagic layer (1 000 to 1 400 m), close to the bottom. Since nauplii and early copepodite stages did not occur in any season,N. cristatus probably do not reproduce in Sagami Bay.

Notes: Abstract Brood size and chemical composition (carbon, nitrogen, and ash) of Pareuchaeta norvegica in Loch Etive, Scotland have been determined. From 23 to 37 eggs were found in each egg mass (mean=30 eggs). The eggs are oval; the mean size of the longer axis is 438 μm. Variation in egg mass (as dry weight) is related to increase in dry weight of the maternal body. an increase of 1 mg in maternal body dry weight produces an increase of 0.03 mg dry weight in the egg mass. Carbon content increases with increasing body dry weight both in pre-spawning and spent females, but nitrogen content decreases with increasing body weight. Thus, the carbon:nitrogen ratio increases with increasing body dry weight. The carbon content of an egg mass ranges from 61.4 to 65.3%, and nitrogen content from 9.6 to 13.2% of the total dry weight. Some examples of partitioning of chemical components of the maternal body into the egg mass are also described.

Notes: Abstract Association between copepods and bacteria was observed in many scanning electron micrographs. Particular sites on the copepods were selectively colonized by bacteria; the joints of segments and legs, swimming legs and depressed parts of the body surface were found to be densely covered with bacteria. In comparison, bacterial attachment to copepod skeletons in fecal pellets excreted by chaetognaths was not selective; bacteria were sparsely found all over the copepod. Between 9 to 30% of copepods in Tokyo Bay waters had attached bacteria in January and April 1983.
