    Notes: Conclusion This book argues convincingly that the history of technologies play a major part in current economic evolution. It provides data, figures and explanations related to public policies but does not take into account domestic industrial dynamics and does not explain how national leaders have emerged in high tech industries. Intuitively, one can imagine that the history of firms and industries play a part as well as the history of public policies. European data relate at the best up to 1988 and are scarce relative to the detailed presentation of American public policies (see for examples the data related to basic research between 1975 and 1988 (p. 131). The book aims very clearly to suggest guidelines to the American administration public policies devoted to technologies in order to maintain the leadership of US firms in high tech industries. Unfortunately, the conclusions are not very clear-cut and it is difficult to draw lesson for European countries or for the NICs as the authors themselves think these conclusions are hazardous even in the US case.

    Comparison of the combination of cholestyramine/alginates with placebo in the treatment of postgastrectomy biliary reflux gastritis (1981)

    Notes: Summary Postgastrectomy biliary reflux gastritis is quite common. Several drugs have been used in its treatment, including the bile acid-binding resin cholestyramine, which seemed ineffective, possibly because of its rapid disappearance from the gastric remnant. It was suggested that by using alginates, which form a raft floating on the gastric contents, cholestyramine would be retained in the stomach for a longer period. 32 patients received either placebo or cholestyramine/alginates/bicarbonate (CAB). Gastroscopy with biopsies, laboratory studies and physical examination were performed before and after the trial. At two week intervals patients were interviewed about the effect on symptoms. A detailed Y-ray study was made of 5 patients, in which a series of pictures was taken after ingestion either of placebo or CAB together with a novel contrast medium. There was no statistical difference between treatment groups with respect to symptoms, gastroscopy or histological findings, nor did the X-ray study show any difference in retention time between placebo and CAB.

    Notes: Makes the case that the classical theory of production, as developed primarily by Adam Smith, should be seen as a precursor of the modern capabilities view of the firm (Penrose, Richardson, Nelson and Winter, Teece, Langlois and others). Furthermore, based on an empiricist epistemology, Smith developed ideas that are close to modern notions such as routines and bounded rationality. Shows that his emphasis on knowledge, specialization and learning is characteristic of the capabilities view, but not of the contractual view. Discusses the intellectual link from Smith to other classicals, such as Babbage and Marx, to Marshall and such post-Marshallians as McGregor, Andrews, Downie, Penrose, and Richardson. Argues that the classical-capabilities view of the firm can be seen as a theory of firm boundaries. States that the make-or-buy decision may in fact hinge on production-cost considerations, contrary to the spirit of standard transaction-cost economics.

    Notes: This article links up with recent discussions of the strategy/economics nexus. In contrast to most of the proponents and opponents of economics in strategy thinking, a balanced pluralist perspective is adopted. According to this, a discipline should strike a balance between the generation of new theoretical alternatives and the selection among them. Applying this general idea, I argue that the strategy field is too pluralistic, and that the unfortunate consequences of excessive pluralism and eclecticism may be remedied by economics playing a larger role in the conversation of strategy researchers. This does not necessarily mean standard neoclassical economics or new industrial organization economics; evolutionary economics, for example, is a serious contender, too. the evolution of Michael Porter's thinking is used as a case for demonstrating some of the advantages and some of the dangers of economics in the strategy field, and for illustrating points about eclecticism and pluralism.

    Notes: Relative ground state CF and CF2 concentrations have been measured in a 13.56-MHz rf CF4/Ar discharge using both laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and actinometric techniques to assess the validity of actinometry for CF and CF2 over a limited parameter space of pressure and power. Relative measurements of the CF ( A2Σ − X2Π) system and the CF2 ( A1B1 − X1A1) system were made by LIF. Actinometric values were calculated from relative measures of the plasma-induced emission (PIE) intensity of the CF* ( B2Δ− X2Π) at 202.4 nm, CF2* ( A1B1 − X1A1) at 251.9 nm, and Ar* [4s'(1/2)°−4p'(1/2)] at 750.4 nm. Both LIF and PIE signals were spatially averaged over the bulk of the plasma. Steady-state actinometric and LIF measurements were compared for CF4/5% Ar discharges at pressures in the range of 500 to 1000 mTorr and nominal powers in the range of 20 to 100 W. Dynamic actinometric and LIF measurements of CF were made by modulating the discharge power and monitoring the CF transient at one set of conditions, 500-mTorr pressure and 70-W nominal power. Our results indicate that actinometric measurements of CF and CF2 correlate well with relative CF and CF2 LIF measurements under the studied conditions.

    Notes: The stationary expansion of an ionized uranium vapor, created in an electron-beam evaporator, is studied in this article. Using an electrostatic probe, the electron temperature, the electron density, and the plasma potential have been measured along the vertical axis in the evaporator. The analysis, made by moving the probe along the vertical axis, first shows that the plasma is thermalized during its expansion in the vacuum chamber and, second, that the plasma density decreases exponentially. The plasma expansion is theoretically described using a fluid model which takes into account the charge exchange process. In solving the system, consisting of three equations (continuity, momentum conservation, and energy conservation), good agreement with the experimental data is obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To compare the efficacy of ranitidine bismuth citrate plus clarithromycin (RBC–C) vs. omeprazole plus amoxycillin (OME–AMO) in the cure of Helicobacter pylori infection.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:In this double-blind, multicentre, parallel-group study 122 H. pylori-positive patients with active duodenal ulcer or gastritis, with confirmed history of duodenal ulcer, were randomized to treatment with ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.d. plus clarithromycin 500 mg b.d. or omeprazole 20 mg b.d. plus amoxycillin 1000 mg b.d. for 14 days, followed by 14 days of ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.d. or omeprazole 20 mg once daily, respectively, to facilitate ulcer healing. Endoscopy was carried out at the start of the study and 28 days after the end of treatment. At each endoscopy four biopsies were obtained from the antrum and four biopsies from the corpus, for rapid urease test, histology and culture. H. pylori infection was defined as a positive urease test, confirmed by histology or culture. Cure of H. pylori infection was defined as negative urease test, histology or culture from both sites.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Per-protocol, all-patients-treated and intention-to-treat cure rates (95% confidence interval) were, respectively, 90% (81–89%), 90% (82–89%) and 84% (74–93%) for ranitidine bismuth citrate plus clarithromycin, and 39% (27–54%), 44% (31–57%) and 41% (29–53%) for omeprazole plus amoxycillin, P 〈 0.00001. Both regimens were well tolerated. Eight patients were lost to follow-up, for lack of efficacy (one patient), adverse events (three patients) or refusal of second endoscopy (four patients).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:Ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.d. with clarithromycin 500 mg b.d. is superior to omeprazole 20 mg b.d. with amoxycillin 1000 mg b.d. Ranitidine bismuth citrate with clarithromycin is the first dual therapy with high cure rates and good tolerance, and is easy to take. It may therefore prove a suitable first-line treatment in H. pylori infection.
