    Notes: A crystal structure in P\bar 1 consisting of P heavy atoms and Q light atoms in the unit cell is considered, and the random variable vectors h and k, subject to well defined restrictions, are uniformly and independently distributed in reciprocal space. The linear combination of two phases ψ = φh+ φk is a structure seminvariant if and only if h + k = 0 (mod ω) where ω = (2, 2, 2). Eh and Ek are the two normalized structure factors associated with phases φh and φk and EPh and EPk are the contributions of the heavy atoms respectively. The first neighborhood of ψ consists of the four magnitudes |Eh|, |Ek|, |E(h + k)/2|, |E(h - k)/2|- The conditional probability distribution of ψ, given the four magnitudes |Eh|, |Ek|, |E(h + k)/2|, |E(h - k)/2| and the known contributions EPh, EPk from the heavy atoms, is derived to the approximation of 1/N. In favorable cases, i.e. when phase indications from the four-magnitude neighborhood of the seminvariant and the heavy-atom contributions coincide, a reliable estimate for ψ is obtained. The result obtained is applied to the structure of a derivative of β-lactam and its usefulness is demonstrated.

    Notes: By characterizing isomorphism in reciprocal space [i.e. diffraction data sets are isomorphous if they have the same geometry (the same reciprocal-lattice unit cell) and the same symmetry] it is shown that the diffraction data of a native protein and of its heavy-atom derivatives, the calculated data of a partial structure and the observed data of its associated complete structure, and the Friedel-pair data of an anomalously scattering crystal structure all belong to the more general class of isomorphous data sets. Their joint probability distributions for two- and three- phase structure invariants are shown to be isomorphous: they have the same functional form and differ only in individual atomic scattering factors. General joint probability distributions, which can be used for any isomorphous data pairs, are presented.

    Notes: Earlier work on P2 made simplifying assumptions. The resulting restrictions are now removed, and the expected intensity of a general reflexion is shown to be Σ [1 - 2aJ1 (4πas)/(C - 4πa2)s], where Σ is the sum of the squares of the moduli of the atomic scattering factors, a is an average atomic diameter, J1 is the usual Bessel function, s is (2 sin θ)/λ, and C is the area of the face of the cell perpendicular to the twofold axis. The expected value is altered for the special groups of reflexions h = k = 0 and l = 0, h and k even.

    Notes: Radio frequency magnetron sputtered Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films have been deposited on silicon and Si/SiO2/SiN/Pt substrates. The analysis of plasma discharge has been carried out using the Langmuir probe technique. Both the pressure and power have been found to influence the ion density and self-bias of the target. Introduction of oxygen into the discharge effectively decreases the ion density. The structural and electrical properties have been investigated using x-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy of deposited films and capacitance–voltage, conductance–voltage, and current density–electric field characteristics of fabricated capacitors. The growth and orientation of the films have been found to depend upon the type of substrates and deposition temperatures. The 〈100〉 texture in the film is promoted at a pressure 0.25 Torr with a moderately high value of ion density and low ion bombardment energy. Films deposited on Si/SiO2/SiN/Pt substrate have shown higher dielectric constant (191) and lower leakage current density (2.8×10−6 A/cm2 at 100 kV/cm) compared to that on silicon. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Phospholipid components of skin surface secretions of four Indian freshwater fishes were analysed using different solvent systems in one-dimensional and two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography, and quantified using a spectrophotometer. The phospholipid pattern of the skin secretions is similar to that of membrane lipids. Phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl ethanolamine are the major components constituting approximately two-thirds of the total phospholipids. Sphingomyelin and phosphatidyl serine are present in relatively low quantities. Phosphatidic acid, phosphatidyl glycerol, lysophosphatidyl choline and lysophosphatidyl ethanolamine, which may be important metabolic intermediates, are present in very low quantities in the skin surface secretions of all four species. It is suggested that the lipids are derived from membranous profiles in the secretions of skin glands, extrusion of membrane-bound vesicles from surface epithelial cells, and exfoliated cells. The results are discussed in relation to the biochemical and biological significance of these lipids in the skin secretions.
