Notes: Summary Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) binding was examined in 32 cases of intracranial human germcell tumors. In embryonal carcinomas, intense DBA binding sites were found on the free surface and cytoplasm of embryonal cells. In teratomas, glandular structures often had positive DBA binding sites. Yolk sac carcinomas and choriocarcinomas showed negative DBA affinity. Of 19 cases of germinomas, 10 showed no DBA-positive cells, while sporadically and/or collectively distributed-DBA positive cells were found in the other 9 cases. Common brain tumors such as gliomas, neurinomas and meningiomas were negative for DBA staining. Considering the cellular carbohydrate structure, these findings suggest that DBA-positive cells in germinoma might be evidence of differentiation into embryonal or some somatic components. In addition, because of the absence of DBA binding sites in the common brain tumors, the identification of such binding sites in brain tumors might act as a marker for embryonal or somatic components, especially among germ-cell tumors.

Notes: Summary Thirty-nine cases of primary intracranial arachnoid cyst in the elderly, including one case of our own, were analyzed. Clinical characteristics in these patients were as follows. (1) The number of patients decreased with age, but there were no differences according to sex. (2) Clinical manifestations were similar to those of chronic subdural haematoma or normal pressure hydrocephalus including dementia, urinary incontinence, and hemiparesis. General symptoms such as headache and seizures were also present. (3) Surgery was performed in most patients with generally good outcome regardless of operative procedures (capsular resection vs. shunt). (4) In some cases of advanced age, disease manifestation may have been due to slight head injuries. Our own case is described as an example.

Notes: Summary Correlation between the mean number of nucleolar organizer region-associated argyrophilic proteins (AgNORs) per cell and BrdU labeling index (LI), the percentage of S-phase cells, was investigatedin vitro using rat C6 glioma cells under several different conditions such as increased concentration of fetal calf serum (FCS) in a stepwise manner in medium. In addition, the effect of dibutyryladenosine cyclic monophosphate (d-cAMP) on the mean number of AgNORs and the BrdU LI was examined. C6 glioma cells cultured with no FCS showed 5.1% BrdU LI and 3.46 AgNOR score. BrdU LI and AgNOR score of the cells cultured with 1% FCS were 26.5% and 6.25, respectively. Those with 5% FCS were 44.7% and 8.41, with 10% FCS; 49.8% and 10.85, and with 20% FCS; 48.4% and 10.64. Treatment of d-cAMP with 10% FCS induced morphological differentiation and reduced BrdU LI (9.4%) and AgNORs score (4.90), compared with C6 cells cultured in medium containing 10% FCS without d-cAMP. Thus, the BrdU LI and AgNOR score of the C6 cells cultured under several different concentration of FCS were shown to be well linearly related (r=0.97) and both values were decreased with morphological alteration of C6 glioma cells in the presence of 1 mM d-cAMP.
