    Notes: Abstract Dynamic graciloplasty has recently been developed for reconstruction of anal function in patients who are fecally incontinent in preference to permanent abdominal colostomy. Since the muscular portion of gracilis is wrapped around the neoanus, the length of the gracilis arc influences the functional outcome of graciloplasty. Although dissection of the main pedicle (i.e. the main artery and vein) can facilitate gracilis to have enough muscle arc, it has been unclear whether there are any vessels proximal to the main pedicle or through the origin of the muscle which could support blood flow into the whole of gracilis. In this study, the vascular anatomy of gracilis in both legs of 26 Japanese cadavers was examined. All muscles had a main pedicle, mean maximum diameter 1.08 mm, entering at the proximal one-third of the muscle. However, only 18 muscles (34.6%) had an accessory artery in the proximal portion in addition to the main pedicle. Some arteries always exist at the origin of the muscle, having a mean maximum diameter of 0.34 mm, suggesting that they might be able to support the whole gracilis without supply from the main pedicle.

    Notes: Abstract Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that can grow either as yeast or as mycelia. The mycelial form may be required for tissue penetration and therefore may have a role in pathogenesis. The protein profiles of the cell-free S100 fraction from budding yeast cells and germ tube-forming cells (an early stage of the transition between yeast and mycelia) were evaluated using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). Yeast growth or germ tube formation was induced in carbon-starved cells at 37° C by either glucose, galactose or N-acetylglucosamine at pH 4.5 or pH 6.7. More than 400 constitutively synthesised polypeptides were identified on 2-D PAGE by silver staining. A few polypeptides which seem to reflect the release from carbon starvation were detected, but no polypeptides unique to either morphology were observed. Fractionation of S100 preparations by polyethylenimine or heparin-agarose affinity chromatography, which have been used to detect DNA-binding proteins, revealed several proteins that were synthesised on the resumption of cell growth or in response to pH difference. Heparin-agarose also bound novel polypeptides in the size range 130–200 kDa that were preferentially synthesised in germ tube-forming cells. These results suggest that any protein factors that might exert a regulatory role early in germ tube formation are of low abundance, and that a minor group of soluble proteins involved in C. albicans morphogenesis may be differentially synthesised.

    Notes: Summary Unilateral stereotaxic lesions were made in the anterior thalamic nuclei of the cat, and the ensuing terminal degeneration traced to the medial cortex by the methods of Nauta-Gygax and Fink-Heimer. The anterodorsal nucleus projects to the retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. These projections appear to be organized in the dorsoventral direction. The posterior portion of the retrosplenial area receives no fibers from the anterodorsal nucleus. Fibers from this nucleus are distributed largely in layer I and in layer III and the deep portion of layer II of the posterior limbic cortex. The anteroventral nucleus sends fibers to the cingular area and parts of the retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. These projections appear to be organized in a topical manner mediolaterally. When the lesion involves the parvocellular part of the nucleus, degeneration spreads to the lower lip, bank and fundus of the splenial sulcus. There appears to be an anteroposterior organization in the cortical projections of the anteroventral nucleus. Fibers from the anteroventral nucleus are distributed most profusely in layers IV and III and in the superficial portion of layer I of the posterior limbic cortex. The anteromedial nucleus sends fine fibers to the anterior limbic region and to the cingular, retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. The cortical projections of the anteromedial nucleus appear to be topographically organized in the dorsoventral direction. Fibers from the anteromedial nucleus are distributed largely in cortical layers V and VI of the anterior and posterior limbic regions.
