Abstract An analysis is made of the influence of impurity content and of the sign and variation of the load on the stress-strain curves of aluminum at liquid helium temperatures. It is shown that the deformation instability, observed as jumps in the diagrams, depends on all these factors. When the sign of the load is reversed, the amplitude of the deformation jumps increases, which leads to the appearance of macrocracks, even under compression. The temperature-strain rate region of unstable deformation was determined for the alloy D16T.
